Good morning, it’s Thursday, January 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Digital content producer and syndicator 60Frames rolled out its first slate of programming with 7 new online series including the comedy Cockpit, developed by creators of Prom Queen and Erik the Librarian Mysteries, written and directed by TV writer Brent Forrester (The Office). The company, founded by former head of UTA online Brent Weinstein, also announced syndication deals with MySpace, YouTube, iTunes, Bebo, Blip.tv, Break, Dailymotion, Heavy, Joost, Veoh Networks and Vuze to air its web series.
The Family Guy Star Wars Parody Blue Harvest went on sale, the first Fox DVD equipped with Digital Copy for iTunes. Consumers can legitimately transfer a copy of the film to their iTunes library and then view it on a Mac or PC, iPod, iPhone or on Apple TV. The upcoming release of Hitman on March 11 will also contain this feature.
Turner Sports’ PGA.com went live with a redesign timed for the 2008 golf season. New offerings include the PGA Pro Finder search function, a comprehensive instructional library, complete tournament coverage and new exclusive video content.
Multiplatform PBS Kids Sprout network launched a nutrition initiative with KidsHealth.org designed to inspire parents to connect and communicate with their preschoolers about health and nutrition issues. Sprout Smart PSAs will begin airing today on the Sprout linear channel, at SproutSmart.com and will roll out across a number of cable networks throughout the year. PBS also announced it will be adding more video content to its YouTube channel.
Fox International’s BabyTV launched on Narrowstep‘s IPTV platform as babytvchannel.com. BabyTV launched internationally in 2005 and is available on over 100 platforms in 65 different countries and in 12 different languages via linear TV, VOD, mobile, broadband, home videos and inflight services.
Social networking site Bebo premiered the second season of the interactive web soap KateModern yesterday, revealing the fate of poor Kate. Bebo says the show averages more than 1.5 million weekly views and has received more than 35 million views since its launch in April 2007.
Comedic Video site JibJab Media‘s unique audience grew from 1.7 million to 2.4 million during the past month, according to comScore Media Metrix, an increase of 156%. Only OfficeMax.com grew at a higher rate during the same period.
JumpTV secured online streaming and mobile rights for up to 70 remaining FIFA World Cup South American qualifying soccer matches from SCP Worldwide. JumpTV also paid approx. $3.5 million for a minority stake in SCP’s broadcast rights for the games on all broadcast platforms, including DTH, cable, terrestrial, Internet and mobile. SCP and JumpTV have jointly secured distribution deals for this content with ESPN, DirecTV, DISH Network and InDemand to create an integrated coverage package.
Wireless high speed internet provider Clearwire is collaborating with Google to offer an suite of Google Apps to Clearwire customers. In addition to Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Talk, Clearwire will use AdSense to provide Google search capabilities for future Clearwire portal applications. The deal will provide Google with a valuable testing ground for delivering applications over WiMax technology, also being rolled out by Sprint.
NBC expanded its NBC Everywhere network of out-of-home digital platforms, announcing new strategic advertising and content partnerships with heath club content distributor IdeaCast and collegiate network The University Network. NBC Everywhere has entered into content and sales partnerships with Arena Media Networks, the PRN Supermarket Network, NJ PATH Trains, Clear Channel Taxi Media, Fuelcast and Channel One – providing a total reach encompassing over 200 local markets, 1600 locations, and 300,000 screens nationwide.
ESPN.com reported users viewed a record 1.2 billion videos on the site in 2007, a 54% increase over the previous year. The site averaged 19.3 million unique users per month, more than 153 million average monthly visits and an average time spent per user of 46 minutes, which is a 36% increase over 2006. Additionally, broadband service ESPN360.com doubled its distribution since Dec. 2006. It is now available in more than 20 million homes nationwide via more than 25 ISPs.
A total of 46.1 mobile data users in the U.S. used mobile search functions in Q3 of 2007, according to a Nielsen report examining the mobile search behavior of wireless subscribers. The most popular form of mobile search among data users in Q3 2007 was 411 (18.1 million users), followed closely by SMS-based searching (14.1 million users) during the same period. Demographics vary by search method. 61% of 411 search users are female, while 60% of WAP (or mobile web) search users are male.

Darcy Antonellis was upped to President Warner Bros. Technical Operations. She will focus on developing, adapting and leveraging new technologies to support Warner Bros.’ various businesses. Darcy will retain her previous positions’ oversight of Warner Bros. Advanced Digital Services, Worldwide Anti-Piracy Operations and GDMX (Global Digital Media Xchange) and report directly to Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
Virgin Mobile tapped current VP/Brand & Integrated Marketing Bob Stohrer as Chief Marketing Officer. Bob will takes over for current CMO Howard Handler, who is leaving the company.
Veoh Networks named Dow Jones veteran Michael Henry as SVP/Advertising Sales. Michael will open a New York office for Veoh, which has principle offices in L.A. and San Diego.
The Maryland Public Broadcasting Commission promoted Steven J. Schupak to SVP/Content Enterprises, overseeing development of strategic content partnerships with a focus on licensing content to new media such as the web, mobile platforms and on-demand.
L.A.-based Championship Gaming Series announced a new executive team including Geoff Stevens as COO, Michael Burks as Executive Producer, Kieve Huffman as SVP/Business Development and Sales, Michael Widman as General Counsel, Scott Valencia as SVP/Operations and Jason Katz as VP/Global Marketing.
The classy, conservatively designed NewYorker.com has some wonderful “online only” content. Check out The Naked Campaign, a series of documentary videos about the 2008 presidential campaign created by writer/director Gail Levin and New Yorker cartoon artist Steve Brodner. They are of a perfect example of how new media can be used to bring traditional media to life on the web. A picture can truly be worth a 1,000 words.
A couple of clarifications from the yesterday’s Macworld news: iTunes Movie Rentals are viewable more than once but limited to a 24-hour viewing period. You have 30 days in which to start the movie after you rent it, but once you do, you have only one day to complete viewing it, via your Mac, iPod or iPhone. (A bit of an inconvenience for those with movie narcolepsy, to be sure.)
Also, we forgot to mention that MGM is also participating in the iTunes Movie Rental program. That means classics like The Magnificent Seven will be available, one of the 21 titles now up for rent on the platform.
