The social gaming business is primed for big growth this year and marketers are taking note. eMarketer reports that social gaming revenues should rise to $1.09 billion this year, up from $856 million last year. The business is being driven by the popularity of games like Farmville and Mafia Wars that let users buy virtual goods, which comprise the bulk of the revenue. But advertising in these games is ticking up too. Ad spending in social games will grow this year by 60% to $192 million, and rise another 41% next year to $271 million, eMarketer said. Brands and marketers are recognizing the opportunity to promote their goods through social games, said Paul Verna, eMarketer Analyst and Author of the report.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Yahoo Sports and social media company SportsFanLive.com paired up to create ThePostGame.com, a digital sports magazine that covers sports culture, such as events players attend, the trips they take and their favorite meals. Toyota is the launch sponsor.

Hockey fans can now watch their favorite teams on their iPad; the NHL launched its NHL GameCenter LIVE subscription service as an iPad app, offering 40 live, out-of-market games per week. The service is available through iTunes and to existing NHL GameCenter Live broadband subscribers for no additional fee.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Social networking site Bebo.com inked a deal with MeFeedia to bring the company’s video discovery engine direct to Bebo users. MeFeedia will also power video advertising for Bebo, which counts more than 117 million registered users worldwide and is popular in the U.K., Ireland and Australia.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

NATPE is programming its first ever Advertising Innovations track at its annual conference this month. Slated for Wednesday January 26 at the NATPE conference in Miami, the track will feature execs from brands such as American Express, Grey Goose, IKEA, Pepsi and Walmart, NATPE said.

Ad featuring celebrities fare the same as ads without familiar faces, said a new report from ad research firm Ace Metrix. The company tested more than 2600 TV ads from 2010 and found that less than 12 percent of ads using celebs achieved a 10 percent lift over the norm and nearly 20% of celeb ads resulted in negative lift of more than 10 percent.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

As it continues to forge its new identity as a digital programmer, AOL struck a deal with studio Endemol USA to co-develop and co-produce Web shows for AOL, starting with content geared to women. Initial series include an interactive Web makeover show called Re-Dressed by America and a cooking competition show called Mama’s Recipe. AOL said that shows produced with Endemol will all include “enhanced online programming,” such as user voting or additional video clips. The deal comes on the heels of other partnerships AOL has struck with Vuguru, Electus and Telepictures.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

It’s not easy being a Netflix streaming user north of the border. A new Credit Suisse report finds that Canadian Internet users who pay based on usage are shelling out as much as $12 more per month due to Netflix bandwidth consumption, according to a Hollywood Reporter piece. Credit Suisse suggests such pricing structures may lead Canadians to cut their cable bills in other ways by switching to a lower-priced package.

Pre-season show buzz doesn’t equal long-term success for a TV network, but a strong a scripted lineup does. Those are among the findings of the Primetime TV Insight series report from the New York Times’ Baseline Intelligence entertainment research division. Over the last ten years, about 30% of the new series with the most pre-season buzz became successful, said TV industry analyst Steve Sternberg with Baseline.This is about the same success rate as all new series, he said. His report also found that brand-building and long-term stability come from scripted shows  less than half of NBC’s non-Saturday schedule consists of scripted shows; that figure is about 80% for the stronger-rated CBS.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Oprah Magazine, known as O, partnered with software firm Autodesk to launch a painting and drawing iPad appear geared to O readers. Called Sketchbook O for iPad, the free app launches with the magazine’s February issue as part of a creativity challenge.

Simon & Schuster is now on Foursquare . When users check in at certain locations, the publisher may provide them with location-based facts and recommendations from some of its authors.

CNN added its interactive online news trivia quiz to its Facebook page that lets users play against the clock to answer five questions about news.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

ITV technology firm FourthWall Media hired Anton Fedorov as VP of iTV Sales and Charlie Barnes as SVP of Product Strategy and Management. Fedorov hails from Concurrrent and Barnes from Insight Communications.

Discovery Communications promoted Eileen O’Neill to the new position of Group President, Discovery and TLC Networks, as part of a restructuring at Discovery’s U.S. networks. Fellow Discovery vet Marjorie Kaplan was also promoted to President of Animal Planet and Science Networks where she’ll also now oversee those two cable networks. Discovery said Henry Schleiff will add responsibilities for Discovery’s Emerging Networks, Planet Green and FitTV, along with continuing his existing role as President and GM of Investigation Discovery and Military Networks.
