Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 10, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The MLS released its schedule for the upcoming 2013 season and will see a total of 87 national games played across the NBC, ESPN, and Univision networks. NBC Sports Group will showcase the most matches with 41 regular season games on deck, including three on NBC and 38 on NBC Sports Network, which will begin with the Houston Dynamo and DC United on Saturday, March 2 at 8p. NBC will spotlight New York Red Bulls/D.C. United on March 16 at 12:30p, LA Galaxy/Portland Timbers on Sept. 29 at 3:30p and Houston Dynamo/ D.C. United on Oct. 27 at 1:30p.
The ESPN family will carry 21 MLS broadcasts this year, usually on Sundays, with eight on ESPN and the remainder on ESPN2. Broadcasts begin with the Timbers/Red Bulls at 7:30p on March 3. Univision will carry the Galaxy/Fire at 5p on March 3 to open the season, while Uni Mas is slating 25 games this year.
On the Air
The NHL’s Board of Governors officially ratified the terms of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the National Hockey League Players’ Association. After the NHLPA signs off later this week, the league will move quickly to finally start the regular season. In fact, broadcasters have already been told to expect the season to stretch into the end of June this year due to the delayed start of the season, according to the Globe and Mail.
ESPN’s Andy Katz finally debuts his new show on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 4:30p. The weekly series, Katz Korner, will feature interviews with ESPN analysts, coaches and players each week with an “emphasis on delving deeper into issues and news of the day.” Katz is also lined up a return as host of The Experts on ESPNU every Tuesday at 1p.
Four-time PGA TOUR winner Notah Begay III is now part of the NBC family, where he will work with NBC’s and Golf Channel’s on-air teams beginning this week with Golf Channel’s coverage of the Sony Open in Hawaii. Begay will serve as a walking course reporter during NBC and Golf Channel tournament broadcasts and will also contribute to series such as Golf Central.
Clear Channel Media and Entertainment named Bruce Gilbert to the newly-created role of Senior Vice President of Sports Operations. Gilbert joins CCM+E from CBS Radio, and will be responsible for the creation, development and direction of sports programming at CCM+E, including Premiere Networks and the FOX Sports Radio Network.
BTN will launch season four of The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2013 on Sunday at 8p, hitting each campus in the conference. The 10-episode series wraps up with a one-hour special dedicated to the 2013 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in March.
Yahoo! Sports reports that the Sacramento Kings are about to be sold to a group led by Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer that would move the team to Seattle. The sale would be for $500 million and involve the team playing at KeyArena for two seasons while a new venue in the Sodo District is constructed.
Outdoor Channel announced a multi-platform partnership with syndicated radio show The Revolution with Jim & Trav. As part of the deal that kicked off this month, Outdoor Channel will become the title sponsor of the radio show, which will be now be renamed The Revolution with Jim & Trav: The Official Radio Program of Outdoor Channel. The partnership enables shared cross-promotional marketing opportunities, on-air, in print and online, including The Revolution podcast.

T-Mobile USA entered into an agreement with MLB to make the phone carrier the Official Wireless Sponsor of MLB. As part of the multi-year, multimillion-dollar partnership, T-Mobile will work with MLB and MLB Advanced Media with technology that includes a new On-Field Communication System that will offer a new dugout-to-bullpen structure that will roll out in 2013. In collaboration with MLBAM, T-Mobile also utilize its 4G network to further enhance and broaden network coverage and connectivity for fans in MLB ballparks.
Nike Golf President Cindy Davis is expected to finally announce on Monday that Rory McIlroy has signed on to be the new face of the brand, according to The Telegraph. The deal is estimated to be valued around $250 million and the largest in the history of the sport.
Gangnam Style is coming to the Super Bowl. Korean rapper PSY will take part in a Wonderful Pistchios first-ever Super Bowl ad, which will air on Feb. 3. This will also mark the first time the artist has starred in a U.S. television commercial.
Jamie Farr is bowing out as the host of LPGA event The Marathon Classic after twenty years on the job. Marathon Petroleum inked a deal with the event to serve as the new title sponsor of the tournament. In tribute to Farr’s long commitment to the event, the tournament is naming one of its charitable efforts the Jamie Farr Scholarship Fund.

Xfinity TV continues to beef up its sports presence and is now on board to serve as the first multichannel provider to bring its customers a live stream of ESPN Buzzer Beater on its website. In addition to live streaming, customers who subscribe to the Sports Entertainment tier of service will now also be able to watch ESPN Buzzer Beater, the company’s weekly HD college basketball live cut-in and highlights network.
NCAA.com, managed by Turner Sports, launched the opening of fan voting to determine the NCAA All-Time March Madness players, team and moment as part of the 75 years of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The honorees will be revealed on Final Four Friday, April 5, in Atlanta in conjunction with the 2013 Men’s Final Four.
A study by Tuckahoe Strategies revealed that NASCAR’s Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports and Jimmie Johnson are among the sport’s strongest and most engaging users of social media. The social media scores were based on online presence, number of social platforms activated and timeliness of updates. For the organization itself, NASCAR’s total social media reach hit 5,044,070, including Facebook likes (3,239,504), Twitter followers (841,027) and YouTube subscribers (5,430) and 956,689 circles on Google+.
