Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes revealed plans to spin off the declining AOL internet access unit from the portal’s ad business, make all of its networks available on demand and possibly shed some shares of Time Warner Cable down the road. Defending the strategy to analysts, he described broadband and cable on demand programming as complementary rather than cannibalistic to traditional advertising and viewership.
Online micro-network producer Next New Networks is partnering with MySpace to offer a selection of its regular programming on MySpaceTV. The branded embeddable channels will offer a minimum of 20 episodes each from networks including Barely Political, Channel Frederator, Indy Mogul and Veracifer. MySpace has also agreed to distribute Next New Networks content on its mobile platforms.
HDNet Movies announced it will air the restored Director’s Cut of Lawrence of Arabia this Sunday Feb. 10 at 6:15 pm ET, the first time the classic has ever been shown in HD. Meanwhile, HDNet continues to shop its Ultra HD VOD product to cable and satellite distributors. The company is offering its partners’ customers the chance to purchase theatrical movies like the upcoming Magnolia Pictures release Flawless on a PPV basis before it opens in theaters, with the option to burn it onto a DVD-R for posterity. HDNet founder Mark Cuban described MSOs response so far as “off the charts.”
The William Morris Agency has signed on to represent Finland-based Habbo, the hot virtual world site for teens. WMA will help Habbo land actors and musicians for in-game appearances, as well as work to build new strategic partnerships and cross-promotional opportunities. The deal begs the question – Do the agents get paid in dollars or Habbo Coins?
Mobile service provider Helio announced a partnership with Buzzd.com to provide real-time information on bars, clubs and restaurants based on users’ location.
Mobile entertainment company Medeo has struck a deal with The Recording Academy to distribute Grammy-related video content to Nokia mobile users outside of the U.S., including pre-show, red carpet and backstage post-show coverage. Medeo produces 6 channels of entertainment-themed content for mobile devices.

Revver, one of the first video sharing sites to share ad revenue with its producers, is officially shopping for a buyer, reports CNET. The site is seeking between $300,000-$500,000 as well as assumption of around $1 million in debt.
Financial media company Minyanville, producer of an animated financial news show on the Fox Business Network, has launched the first free financial virtual community. MinyanLand‘s goal is to teach kids and their families the fundamentals of finance and economics. Visitors can create a personalized MinyanLand avatar and are set up with a home and bank account with $5,000 in MinyanMoney. Kids can work to earn more, invest, shop and re-locate to new neighborhoods.
Howcast.com joins the growing list of how-to-video sharing sites. The site, launched by former Google and YouTube executives with $8 million in seed funding, includes a director’s program instructing emerging filmmakers on production, distribution and advertising techniques.
Google is working on a joint venture with a Chinese online music distributor to provide Chinese users access to free ad supported music downloads, reports The Wall Street Journal. Google has been slugging it out with China’s search giant Baidu, which operates a music download search service that accounts for more than 7% of its total traffic. Google hopes its plans to embed music files with digital watermarks can convince major U.S.-based record labels to supply the venture.
Online video delivery network Akamai reported $183.2 million in Q4 revenue, up 14% from a year earlier on net income of $35.8 million.
CBS Mobile struck a deal with social mapping service Loopt to deliver location-based mobile web advertising in the U.S. Loopt’s GPS-based localization technology can serve targeted ads to users based on where they are at the time, appearing on WAP-based CBS News and CBS Sports mobile sites.
