Apple said it will release the specifications necessary for outside developers to create applications for the iPhone next week as well as unveil a new suite of features aimed at business clients. The company is on track to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of the year. Meanwhile, iTunes climbed into second place among music retailers in 2007, behind only Wal-Mart according to the latest NDP Group research. Apple has sold over 4 billion songs to date.
Following the NFL’s controversial 45-second online video limitation, Major League Baseball has followed suit restricting news organizations from airing or streaming more than 2 minutes of audio or video from league facilities, reports Sports Business Journal. New rules will also prohibit postings of more than 7 photos from any game online and require removal of any audio, photo or video coverage after 72 hours.
ESPN.com threw out the first pitch on a new season of Fantasy Baseball sponsored again by Dick’s Sporting Goods. Multiplatform offerings include live scoring, mobile alerts, podcasts and extensive TV, radio and online coverage. Fantasy sports usage grew by nearly 170% last year for ESPN.com in terms of unique visits, according to the network, with fantasy baseball players growing nine-fold during 2007, the first time it was offered for free.
NBC officially selected P2P content delivery network Pando Networks to power its NBC Direct service, which will offer DVD-quality downloads of NBC prime time shows including 30 Rock, Heroes and The Office. Pando will also provide hash matching, digital fingerprinting and content watermarking technologies to ensure copyright protection.
Cast members and executive producers of CBS‘ Ghost Whisperer: The Other Site II will conduct a live behind-the-scenes tour of the set and answer questions from fans tonight at 5 pm ET/2 pm PT on Veoh‘s Viral Live channel. The online companion series, produced by Slam Internet, Inc., continues through March 7.

Former IPTV set-top box manufacturer Akimbo has shifted its focus once again, positioning itself as a turnkey software solution which web publishers can use to offer ad supported VOD in different models and formats including subscription, download-to-own and download-to-burn. Male-targeted MavTV will be one of its first customers.
MAPLight.org has created a Presidential Money Race Widget to keep bloggers, citizens and beltway pundits abreast of candidates’ reported fundraising data the moment it becomes available.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
The EU hit Microsoft with another $1.35 billion in fines for failing to comply with a 2004 antitrust ruling. The software giant is accused of failing to publish protocols for open source software developers at a reasonable price. Perhaps the commission didn’t see Microsoft’s big interoperability release last week.
Sony unveiled its first Blu-ray DVD player that enables broadband downloads of bonus material and picture-in-picture views, features that have been promised since the technology was introduced. The “BD-Live” feature works through an Ethernet port and will be first added to the BDP-S350 player, scheduled to ship this summer. The connected DVD equipment segment is projected to reach nearly 50 million units by 2012 now that the format war is over, according to a new report from Multimedia Intelligence.
Netflix raised its earnings, revenue and subscriber forecasts, expecting to end March with upwards of 8.26 million subscribers.

Internet Broadcasting appointed Jeff Kimball as COO and Tony Dunaif as GM of Local Media Networks, part of a management shakeup aimed at spearheading the development of new products and services for IB’s local station clients. Jeff will be based out of St. Paul, MN and will report directly to David Lebow, the Company’s President and CEO. Tony will be based out of New York and also report Mr. Lebow.
Tacoda‘s San Francisco-based Manager of Northwest Advertising Sales Steven Stein has been upped to Northwest Director of Ad Sales. He replaces Chris Little who left to join Podshow.
mDialog.com has a unique interface for sharing videos online, sortable by genre and presented in h.264 encoding optimized for viewing on an iPod, iPhone or AppleTV device. The site unveiled a new pay-per-download engine at MacWorld last month, enabling producers to monetize their work a dollar at a time. Or like Radiohead, creators can deploy a pay-what-you will model. mDialog’s next big project will be Do You Believe Me, a new online interactive story/game from Toronto production outfit The Nightingale Company and beActive Productions.
