Good Morning, it’s  Thursday, February 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Turner Broadcasting and its division Cartoon Network caused a lot of commotion in Boston yesterday when a series of lit up electronic devices were discovered on buildings, bus stations and other public places. Police and bomb squads were called in, bringing traffic and business to a halt in parts of the city.  The devices were not bombs, but part of a gorilla marketing campaign for the animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which is part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block.  Interference Inc., the marketing company that deployed folks to put the devices up, has been ordered to remove them.  Turner Broadcasting has apologized to the City of Boston. City and federal officials are following up on the investigation, with Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino saying he will take “any and all action” against Turner to recover the costs incurred in shutting down parts of the city.

FOX will premiere its new six-episode quiz show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? starting with half-hour preview episodes on February 27 and 28 at 930p, immediately following American Idol both nights. The show will then go to a full hour airing after American Idol on March 1 and 8 at 9p, then lead with hour-long episodes on March 15 and 22 at 8p. Instead of testing a person’s intelligence, this quiz show will measure a contestant’s lack of knowledge or point out what they have forgotten since elementary school. The show is from Mark Burnett Productions in association with Zoo Productions.

The Tennis Channel and ESPN have formed a multi-year, multi-media programming and marketing partnership surrounding Grand Slam tournament coverage. For the first time, ESPN and Tennis will share coverage of the French Open, with both networks receiving a portion of the live and delayed telecasts and new media coverage. Tennis previously acquired the U.S. broadcast and new media rights to the French Open last summer from the French Tennis Federation. Starting January 2008, both networks will also share coverage of the Australian Open. Because of this new arrangement, both the French Open and Australian Open events will receive nearly 24/7 exposure on U.S. television through 2011. ESPN2 will continue to televise more than 300 hours of Grand Slam tournament action each year from the French Open, the Australian Open and The Championships at Wimbledon.

MGM‘s domestic distribution division has cleared Comedy Central’s Reno 911! and Chappelle’s Show in the New York, Los Angeles and Chicago markets. By securing these three top markets, MGM has insured a national syndication launch for both programs. The shows will both air on WPIX/New York and in Chicago on WFLD/WPWR. In Los Angeles Reno 911! will air on KCAL and Chappelle’s Show on KTTV/KCOP. In addition, both shows have cleared in 15 other markets. The shows are syndicated by MGM through the studio’s partnership with New Line Television.

ABC will return with the next cycle of The Bachelor on April 2, airing at 930p after Dancing with the Stars in a 90m format.  This installment is subtitled An Officer and a Gentleman.  Stars kicks off on March 19.  Season finales for the current Monday night lineup of Wife Swap, Supernanny and What About Brian? have not been announced yet.  Wife Swap and Supernanny are scheduled to return next season; nothing official yet on Brian.

Current TV signed a new carriage deal with EchoStar Communication Corporation which increases the network’s distribution to more than 38 million U.S. households. Current TV is now available via EchoStar’s DISH network in addition to DirecTV, and through cable operators Comcast and Time Warner.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Lisa Donovan, known and discovered as “Lisa Nova” on YouTube, will join the cast of FOX’s MADtv starting February 17.

FOX has jumped on a new comedy pilot, The Beast from FremantleMedia North America, based on a British series of the same name. Last year, FreemantleMedia licensed the show format and teamed with CBS/Paramount on a pilot script, along with writer/executive producer Tucker Cawley. The Beast is a multi-camera comedy about a flirtatious vet who likes the female pet owners better than the animals. 

CBS has picked up another season of Big Brother, and returning will be host Julie Chen, per Variety.  The series is from Allison Grodner Prods and Endemol USA.  The show will return to primetime this summer.

ABC’s drama pilot based on the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, has cast Jordana Brewster in the role of Mrs. Smith, played in the film by Angelina Jolie.

Casting Call: Harpo Productions, producers of Oprah Winfrey’s The Big Give are looking nationwide for competitive, creative and adventurous individuals to be one of 10 people who will appear and compete on the 10-episode show, about ten people who take on various challenges to see who will live their dream to help others. To be considered, send Oprah a 3-minute tape telling her why you want to give to others, to The BIG GIVE, P.O. Box 618300, Chicago, IL 60661.  Deadline is February 9, and remember, once you submit your tape, it belongs to them and could be used in part on national television. Casting Call:  A new relationship show from the producers of The Surreal Life and My Fair Brady on VH1 is looking for girls who love to party and are ready to fall in love with a bona-fide rock star. Twenty girls will live in a Hollywood Hills mansion and live with a famous lead singer of an ’80s/’90s rock band.  Nobody saying yet who this rock star will be. Infield Parking, the new social-networking web site at www.infieldparking.com which targets NASCAR fans, has selected ABC Regional Sports Sales, an arm of ABC National Television Sales, as its sole national sales representative. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is President and Co-Founder of the web site which is available now as a Beta launch and will debut just before the national NASCAR 2007 season next month. The site will allow users to post profiles, blogs, podcasts and video clips and more.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Les Eisner has been appointed as EVP of The Lippin Group, the international entertainment marketing and public relations company. Les will be charged with managing corporate communications and public relations campaigns for the company’s television, film and new media clients around the world. In addition, he will also have management duties within the company. Based in Los Angeles, Les will report directly to Mr. Lippin.

Overture Films has added Erika Hart Hindle as its new SVP/Finance and Administration. Based in Los Angeles, Erika will handle the company’s finances and administration functions which include human resources and IT.

Film and television producer and executive, Leonard Goldberg has been elected to the CBS Corporation Board of Directors.

Oxygen has named John Alvarez as Director/Affiliate Sales and Amy Willis to the position of National Account Manager. Both are based in the Dallas office. In addition, the network has upped both Amie Hinderliter and Amy Taylor to Director/Affiliate Sales.

NBC Universal Television Studio has upped Lauren Stein to VP/Drama Programming, reporting to Laura Lancaster, SVP/Drama Programming, NBC Universal Television Studio.

Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX did even better this Tuesday night winning with 12.3/30 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Following in second place was CBS at 2.4/6, and then NBC 2.3/6, ABC 1.9/5, CW 1.7/4, UNIV 1.7/4 and TELE 0.4/1. It was FOX’s night as American Idol stomped the competition at 8p with 13.3/33 and again at 9p with House at 11.2/27. In a close finish at 10p, NBC won with 2.9/8 for a repeat of Law & Order: SVU.
