Some more details have turned up about Apple‘s much-discussed successor to the iPad, courtesy of a WSJ piece. The new version of the popular tablet (nearly 15 million sold to date) will be thinner and lighter, sport a front-facing camera, include a faster processor and ship with more internal memory. The mobile broadband-connected versions will initially be available through Verizon and AT&T. In other tablet news, HP unveiled its TouchPad running on the webOS operating system it acquired from Palm. Its biggest “wow” feature is something called Synergy, allowing users to sign in to their Facebook, Google, Microsoft Exchange, LinkedIn or Yahoo! accounts to see their contacts, calendar and email automatically populate the device. The interface simplifies multitasking by presenting group-related “cards” in stacks that combine emails with corresponding web pages or IMs with Facebook posts. HP also unveiled two webOS smartphones and announced that it will start selling webOS-based PCs later this year.
The BBC confirmed plans to roll out a full episode app for Android 2.2 and iPad soon in the UK, enabling users to watch live TV and radio and view catch-up programming on demand from up to 7 days previously. The interface will be customizable to allow favorite shows to populate the start-up screen. Demand for iPlayer content on mobile devices has been staggering, according to a blog post from Daniel Danker, GM of Future Media & Technology for the BBC. Growth in mobile use of BBC iPlayer outpaced PC growth by more than 2-to-1 over Christmas while BBC iPlayer growth on tablets outpaced growth on PCs by more than 20-to-1.
ESPN enjoyed higher consumption of the Winter X Games this year across multiple platforms, with total hours viewing on broadband channel ESPN3.com up 30%, video starts on ESPN.com up 11% and views on the X Games YouTube Channel averaging a record 2.3 million views/day during the event.
Visa has agreed to acquire digital wallet start-up PlaySpan for $190 million in cash, a monetization-as-a-service provider that powers the purchase of virtual goods on social networks and online gaming platforms. The digital goods business is growing like gangbusters, expected to reach $280 billion globally by 2014, according to recent Forrester Research forecast.
Silicon Valley VC firm Andreessen Horowitz has quietly invested more than $80 million in Twitter by purchasing stock in private secondary markets, per AllThingsD. The microblogging site’s most recent financing round, led by Kleiner Perkins, valued the company at $3.75 billion.
Contextual ad company Vibrant is launching a new display ad unit dubbed VIA Dynamic that enables the ad’s creative to change based on the content displayed on the page. Clients’ ads can be equipped with live feeds to incorporate words from the page content in real-time; as the content on the page refreshes so do the ads. The unit also leverages semantic analysis, frequency of words, page positioning, source code data and demographics. Beta tests of the platform show a clickthrough rate of up to 5x higher than standard display ads, according to the company.
To promote its online security software, McAfee is teaming with viral marketing firm Oddcast, creator of CareerBuilder’s Monk-e-mail service, to launch a new marketing campaign that warns against malicious social networking traps by asking “Who Broke The Internet?” The social app presents itself as a news video users can insert their friends in by culling data from user profiles.
Adobe released a new version of its Flash video player (v.10.2) it says is 34-times more power efficient than previous version, freeing up valuable processing speed on your computer. The software includes Stage Video technology, promising improved flexibility (developers can display videos on each face of spinning cube,) and higher quality full screen playback across multiple browsers, devices and TVs.
In response to the Over-the-Top revolution, DirecTV is preparing to add internet connectivity to its set-top boxes including offering wireless hook ups as way to sell more PPV content, according to Investors Business Daily. The plan involves training installers to help set up the connections. The company estimates some 1 million or 6% of its current 19 million subs have a broadband connection running to their set-tops; the company hopes to increase that to 40% by 2013.
Verizon is preparing to launch a new 4G calling service capable of multitasking, video chat and stellar sound quality, per CNN. Tentatively named “VoLTE,” for Voice Over its Long-Term Evolution network, the service will be unveiled week at the Mobile World Congress but won’t be available until next year.
Seattle based RealNetworks announced it is cutting another 130 jobs or 10% of its workforce – the third major round of layoffs since CEO Bob Kimball took over for Rob Glaser a year ago. The cuts are described as “the final step” in the company’s restructuring efforts. Areas being downsized include engineering, sales, marketing and administration.
After ABC unveiled its iPad app geared around Grey’s Anatomy, Fox has followed suit with an iPad companion app around its hit drama Bones. The app automatically synchronizes with the live episode you are watching regardless of your time zone and can also be used when watching catch-up episodes on Fox.com, Hulu or on a DVR. Interactive elements include polls, Facebook and Twitter integrations, the ability to purchase featured songs on iTunes and analyses of the case characters are working on.
CBS Radio News has launched its first iPhone app streaming audio news updates in real-time, 24 hours a day. The free app can be navigated by topic and personalized to fit users’ preferences. It features newscasts, specials, in-depth reports and interviews on the latest headlines.
Mobile video distributor MobiTV has added the T-Mobile-powered Dell Streak 7 tablet to the devices it develops applications for. MobiTV also powers several mobile TV apps for the iPad, including MobiNOW and UFC Mobile.
Adam Sanderson has been named to the new position of SVP/Franchise Management for the Disney/ABC Television Group. Adam is responsible for leveraging properties developed by Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney, ABC Family, ABC Entertainment Group, ABC News, ABC Daytime and Hyperion Publishing and reports to Peter Seymour, EVP/Strategy and Research, Disney Media Networks.
Yahoo announced that Akamai Technologies President David Kenny will join the company’s Board of Directors, replacing Huffington Post CEO Eric Hippeau, who is leaving to become a General Partner at Lerer Ventures and who will also resign from the Yahoo Board.
Music rights group SoundExchange named long-time EVP and General Counsel Michael Huppe as the nonprofit’s new President. He succeeds former head John Simson, who has returned to creative work.
Carlsbad, CA-based gaming and integrated marketing platform Buzztime has hired former envIO Networks marketing executive Vladimir Edelman as its EVP and Chief Content Officer.
Health-related video producer Everwell has hired Matt Herren as VP/Sales and Business Development.
Check out Sneakyshot, a new photo sharing app created by NY-based web start up named OMGICU founded by Hugh Dornbush, and produced by digital production house Addictive Networks, encourages you to take clandestine photos of people with your iPhone and share them via Facebook, Twitter or Sneakyshot.com. The app snaps 4 shots automatically while you hold the phone up to your ear and allows you to choose your favorite to share. (Sorry Mr. Favre, the service explicitly bans people from taking photos “of their junk.”) We can see this taking off in star-populated areas like Los Angeles … if only paparazzi could be so unobtrusive.
