Cynopsis: DIGITAL
12/09/10

Good morning, it’s Thursday, December 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Netflix has been pushing to get premium TV content on its platform the day after it airs, but it will settle for two weeks. Disney has agreed to provide Netflix access to select programming from the Disney Channel, ABC and ABC Family as little as 15 days after it initially airs. Among the shows covered by the deal are ABC Family’s Greek and Melissa & Joey, Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb and all episodes of older ABC shows including Lost and Ugly Betty. Netflix is also currently in talks to extend its licensing deal with pay TV channel Starz, according to the NYPost. Only this time it’s going to cost the streaming video provider more in the neighborhood of $250 million, a multiple of more than 8 from its previous deal.

If you’re planning to hit one of the Blockbuster kiosks on the way home to rent new releases “Inception” or “Knight & Day,” expect to pay a premium this time around. NCR Corp., which operates rental kiosks for the home video brand, is testing a $2.99 price tag on these films for the first night in Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix and San Francisco, triple the usual price and that of competitor Redbox, reports the LATimes. Studios have long complained that $1 rentals devalue their product.

Video ad network YuMe unveiled a trio of new ad formats:

  • “Lights Out” simulates a page take-over by dimming the background of a pre-roll ad
  •  “SideKick” synchronizes design elements, such as animation or audio cues, with the companion banner
  • “Expanded View” allows ads to be framed with a border image to expand branding beyond the video player; once the ad ends, the branded frame disappears

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

A new international study from Initiative has identified some interesting defining trends from today’s college-aged adults (18-24), dubbed “the Reset Generation.” Not surprisingly, 94% of them have anxiety over their jobs or career opportunities. More than half claimed to have dropped out of school due to money woes. This crowd is also the most digitally savvy yet - 65% own a laptop, 71% own an iPod or mp3 player and 41% carry a smartphone. And they’re comfortable with sharing brand experiences, both positive and negative, on digital and social platforms. Recommendation for marketers from the study include:

  • Expanding loyalty programs to reward consumers for the publicity and transactions they initiate through talking, sharing and recommending a brand
  • Making it easier for young users to include your brand on their short list, including giving them the tools to engage in fluid, two- way dialogue throughout the purchase cycle
  • Taking advantage of consumer participation by allocating budgets to social media, branded mobile apps to allow consumers to create and share brand content

Nearly half of all U.S. smartphone users say they have already, or soon will, use their phones to do mobile shopping, according to a recent ABI Research survey. More than half of those surveyed also use, or intend to use, their smartphones for mobile banking.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The entertainment industry continues to be proactive in its quest not to be “Napsterized” by new digital platforms. At a UBS conference in New York on Tuesday, Sony announced it is developing an HD premium movies-on-demand service around its Qriocity streaming video platform that will be available on a variety of Sony devices, including the PS3, Bravia TVs and Blue-ray players. The movies will be available to stream on an a la carte basis, but a Music Unlimited subscription service is also in the works. The company wants you to register your vital info on the site then tie each device to your Qriocity account, but thankfully the site allows PlayStation Network users to log in using their existing account. What’s interesting about the initiative, which will also extend to distributing premium just-released titles through cable operators, is that it gives Sony a completely integrated platform – from studio to the end user – to play around with. The company will be able to adjust pricing and windowing until it hits the sweet spot. After all, no one in their right mind actually thinks Americans will pay $30 to see a movie 30 days before it comes out on DVD.
