Cynopsis

12/08/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, December 8, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

What has been the overall effect of making ABC hit shows available for download on iTunes?  According to Tom Staggs, CFO/Walt Disney Co., they see it as all positive.  Speaking at the CSFB Global Media Week conference yesterday in New York, Staggs said the expectation may have been a drop in TV viewing ratings, but in fact the opposite seems to have happened.  The numbers for Desperate Housewives and Lost have gone up since the deal with Apple iTunes was done, and with some 800,000+ downloads (at $1.99 per download, that adds up), ABC sees it as all good.

Programming NoteUPN will rebroadcast CBS’ Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show from last night on Tuesday, December 13 at 9p.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *Hallmark Channel‘s original movie Love’s Long Journey last Saturday night (9-11p) was the most-watched telecast in the network’s four-year history. The film delivered 2.93 million viewers, and tied in its time period among all basic cable networks in the W25-54 demo, earning a 1.8 rating. Among total viewers, the film drew a 1.6 rating.

Univision will debut Alborada (Dawn), the newest addition to its telenovela lineup, on December 12 at 9p.  The epic story, set against a Mexican backdrop in the late 1800s, is the top novela in Mexico.

NASCAR has been pretty busy, and yesterday announced new deals with Turner Sports, ABC/ESPN, and Fox/Speed Channel, to the cumulative value of $4.5 billion:

  • Turner Sports has signed a long-term deal with NASCAR to air six consecutive races per year on TNT thru the 2014 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series season. NASCAR isn’t new to Turner – it’s been airing the races since 1984.  This newest deal begins in 2007 with the June NEXTEL cup race at Pocono and includes races in Michigan, California, Chicago, New Hampshire, as well as the July 4th primetime event from Daytona. The deal also includes new media distribution opportunities for TNT to distribute its race telecast highlights across the Time Warner properties.
  • NASCAR’s 8-year deal with ABC and ESPN begins in 2007 includes the 17-race Nextel Cup scheduling and the 10-race Chase of the NASCAR Nextel Cup. This marks the first time The Chase will air on just one network.  Also included is exclusive coverage of the entire Busch series as well related programming. The agreement also includes content for ESPN International, ESPN HD, ESPN.com, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Deportes Radio, ESPN360, Mobile ESPN and ESPN Radio, among other platforms. ESPN will also be NASCAR’s exclusive international sales agent worldwide (excluding Mexico and Canada) and will have the right to air all ESPN or ABC Sports ancillary programs on its international networks.
  • Fox will get the first 13 races of the season, with exclusive rights to other notables including the Daytona 500.  Speed Channel will pick up the Nextel Cup Series All Star Challenge and the Gatorade Duels, as well as the majority of the Craftsman Truck races.  In previous deals, FX has picked up a basket of races, though in the new deal they’ll pass.

In its most extensive branded product launch in the past 5 years, BET is signing on with North Carolina-based mobile solutions provider Motricity to provide BET content on wireless services. The BET Mobile brand will include tailored and BET-branded ringtones, graphics, games, alerts and networking choices. BET Mobile has already reached carriage agreements with Cingular/AT&T Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile wireless services with Verizon and Alltel to be added in the first quarter of 2006.

Gemstar-TV Guide International launched TV Guide Mobile yesterday, servicing smart phones, pocket PCs and Palm.  The service provides daily listings, ability to search the TV Guide databases of movies and shows, as well as celebrity news.  Gemstar-TV Guide Int’l launched the new service with Handmark Inc.

CBS is getting into the cellphone business. No, not really.  Rather it’s getting into the content-on-cellphone business with Verizon Wireless V Cast later on this month.  Among the shows available will be CSI, Survivor, Letterman, CBS News and Paramount’s syndicated series Entertainment Tonight.  Content will include promos from each of the entertainment series, news segments from CBS News and ET, and breaking news from CBS News, all produced specifically for cellphone viewing.

And if that’s not enough, CBS is also getting into the publishing business with Watched!, set to launch next month.  A new quarterly insider’s magazine, Watched! is advertiser-supported and will encompass all shows, news and sports on CBS, as well as upcoming DVD releases, theme park updates, behind-the-scenes features, exclusive interviews and anything else you can think of that ties back to CBS.  The magazine is free and will be distributed at a multitude of CBS outlets including affiliates, CBS gift stores, theme parks and show tapings. It will be published by the CBS Communications Group, in association with McMurry, and have a first printing of 400,000 copies.

Coca Cola is getting a new slogan:  Welcome to the Coke side of life. It launches along with a new global campaign this spring.  Also coming down the pipe are a couple of new drinks: Coca Cola Blak is coffee flavored, and a new energy drink for women called … Tab.  Gee, that one sounds oddly familiar.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *RJ Cutler and his Actual Reality shingle is behind a new series launching on FX this March called Black. White. This six part documentary style series takes the idea “walk a mile in my shoes” and makes it a reality: an African American family with the use of makeup is made to appear Caucasian; and takes a Caucasian family and makes them appear African American. They then live together under the same roof for six weeks. Cutler is exec producing along with Ice Cube and Matt Alvarez.

Telemundo is starting production next week on a new original primetime novela titled Tierra de Pasiones.  Produced by Miami-based Telemundo Studios, the show is about the world of wine-making and the love story of the strong-minded Valeria and Francisco.

Fox has ordered a pilot for a sitcom based on the theatrical short The Adventures of Big Handsome Guy and His Little Friend.  The actors playing the title roles in the film (who also co-wrote the film) will reprise their roles in the pilot – Hayes MacArthur as Guy (the big Guy), and Jason Winer as Buddy the little guy.  The pilot will be written by Josh Sternin and Jeff Ventimila, along with MacArthur and Winer.

Casting Call:  CBS is looking for Survivors – go to the cbs.com for an online application.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Audra Levi Priluck has been upped to Manager/Client Development, at E-Poll Market Research, based in Encino, CA. Audra will continue to work
with current clients and also develop new relationships with companies across television, film, video gaming, telecommunications, consumer products, advertising and public relations industries.

AMC has named Gina Degnan Hughes as VP/Advertising and Alison Hoffman to Director/Advertising. Both will be charged with developing and implementing marketing and brand campaigns supporting the network’s initiatives and strategic positioning among consumers and within the marketplace.  Their first major initiative supporting AMC’s first-ever original movie event – Broken Trail, scheduled to premiere in June 2006 – will include advertisements in top-tier print, broadcast and radio outlets; an online presence including a Broken Trail mini-site; and a variety of strategic targeted partnerships. Currently in the planning stages, it is ramping up to be one of the largest multi-tiered initiatives in the history of the network.

Wade Davis has been appointed SVP/Mergers & Acquisitions for new Viacom, following the separation of the company into two publicly traded companies.  Davis reports to Michael J. Dolan, EVP/CFO, Viacom.  He is responsible for identifying potential mergers and acquisitions, managing new Viacom’s interactions with the banking and investment communities on strategic transactions, and leading the execution of any deals.

The Africa Channel has named Shirley Neal as VP/Production and Development.  She will oversee original content production, network operations and current show scheduling.  Shirley was previously VP/video production for NATPE.

Cartoon Network Enterprises continues to expand its global consumer products team with the addition of Rick Blanco as Director/Hardlines Design; Deena Boykin, as Sr. Director/Retail Development; and Daria Cronin as Director/Softlines.  As Director/Hardlines Design, Rick will be based in Burbank and report to Cynthia Rapp, VP/Creative Director, working on creative product development.  Deena and Daria will be based in NY, both reporting Christina Miller, VP/US Consumer Products.  In their new roles Deena and Daria will work with Miller on the commercial development of Cartoon Network brands into consumer product franchises.

Tuesday — A18-49 Analysis:   According to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research, NBC led the charge on Tuesday night with an overall 4.7/12 A18-49, ahead of CBS 3.8/10, ABC 3.7/9, Fox 3.2/8, UPN 1.3/3, WB 1.2/3.  At 8pm, and perhaps surprisingly, Charlie Brown was no blockhead. He delivered a 5.5/15 in the adult demo, six share points ahead of its closest competition – a repeat of NCIS on CBS.  The premiere of Fear Factor drew a modest third place 3.2/8, tied in share with the first hour of Fox’s Billboard Awards.  At 9p NBC’s combo of My Name is Earl and The Office drew the largest A18-49 crowd with a combined average of 5.1/12. At 10p Law & Order: SVU won its time period with a 5.9/15, five share points ahead of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on CBS.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1980-Beatles fans around the world are heartbroken by the murder of John Lennon by a deranged fan.  Lennon was shot at close range just outside the Dakota, his apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.  Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono memorialized her husband by landscaping a small portion of Central Park across the street from the Dakota, which is now known as “Strawberry Fields.”

Today’s Trivia Question:
In this popular ’50s TV show, the main character was a night club singer. In one episode he travelled through Mayberry. That raised the opportunity to introduce Sheriff Andy Taylor, and The Andy Griffith Show became a spinoff.  What was the name original show that spun off The Andy Griffith Show show?    (
