~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

National Geographic Channel, in celebration of the National Geographic Society’s 125th anniversary, is launching a Night of Exploration programming block starting January 11.  Each Friday night from 8 to 10p, the network will feature world premieres and special encores that chronicle the lives of explorers and groundbreaking discoveries.  The programming block kicks off on January 11 at 8p with A New Age of Exploration: National Geographic at 125, an anniversary world premiere special followed by an encore of Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron at 9p.  Subsequent Fridays will feature The Human Family Tree on January 18 and Stonehenge Decoded on January 25 at 8p followed by Easter Island Underworld at 9p among other programs.  For more programming information, please visit www.natgeotv.com.

BBC America ordered a full season of the comedy-variety talk show The Nerdist based on comedian/writer and web pundit Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast.  The network will roll out the ten-episode, one-hour show in spring 2013 as part of its Supernatural Saturday programming block which is home to Doctor Who, Being Human and new original series Orphan Black.  In addition to The Nerdist series, Hardwick will host the Supernatural Saturday programming block starting this spring.  The series will continue to be produced by Nerdist Industries and Comcast Entertainment Studios. 

The premiere date for HISTORY’S new nine-part scripted series Vikings has been set for March 3 at 10p.  The drama, starring Gabriel Byrne and Travis Fimmel tells about the lives and epic adventures of Viking warriors through the eyes of their own society.  Vikings is written and created by Michael Hirst and is an international Irish/Canadian co-production between World 2000 and Take 5 Productions.  HISTORY will broadcast the series in the US while MGM Television is the international distributor outside of Ireland, Canada and the US.  Vikings is also produced in association with Shaw Media and the series will air on HISOTRY in Canada.

MTV picked up a second season of its series Catfish: The TV Show the series that tackles the complexities of dating in a digital world.  The one-hour series first debuted on November 12 and became MTV’s highest rated series premiere in the 11p time period in the network’s history by averaging a 2.3 P12-34 rating through six episodes. 

A seventh season of Bizarre Foods America with Andrew Zimmern is back on Travel Channel beginning February 11 at 9p.  In the new episodes, Zimmern samples baked muskrat in Baltimore to fermented fish eggs in Alaska.  Prior to the season launch, Travel Channel will air the special Bizarre Foods America  Fan Favorites at 8p.  Bizarre Foods America with Andrew Zimmern is produced by Tremendous! Entertainment, Inc. 

The live season two finale of Ink Master on Spike attracted 2.4 million viewers Tuesday night at 1001p, making it the most-watched episode in the series’ history.  The finale episode also posted a 2.1 rating with M18-34 and a 1.7 rating with A18-34.

Programming Note: This Sunday starting at 9p Travel Channel airs the two-part program Magic Man that may end up as a series.  Magic Man is produced by JUMA Entertainment.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Sony Pictures Television has sold the cable syndication rights to CBS’ comedy series Rules of Engagement to Turner Broadcasting’s TBS for a January 2 debut.  The series is presently airing in broadcast syndication in 96% of the US on stations in major markets such as New York (Tribune), Los Angeles (KCAL9/CBS) and Chicago (WCIU/Weigel).  Rules of Engagement has been on CBS for five seasons and recently shot its 100th episode.  The series is produced by Happy Madison Productions and CBS Television Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television.

NBCUniversal and Mediacom Communications yesterday announced a multi-year affiliate deal to offer NBCUniversal’s entire roster of broadcast and cable content via Mediacom’s customers.  This deal encompasses the rights to carry the Olympic Games, on-demand content from NBCU’s cable and broadcast networks and access to live channels across multiple platforms, in and out of the home across the US.  To access the TV Everywhere online programming, Mediacom’s customers must subscribe to the Family TV package. 

Showtime Networks revealed DIRECTV customers who subscribe to the network can now access SHOWTIME ANYTIME.  DIRECTV customers can watch the network’s series, box office movies, specials, documentaries and sports programming anywhere in the US with an internet-connected computer and via mobile devices such as iPads, iPhones and Android smartphones.  SHOWTIME ANYTIME is additionally available now nationwide to AT&T U-verse, Cablevision’s Optimum TV and Verizon FiOS customers.  More cable and satellite providers will be announced in 2013.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Pipeline 39, Entertainment was commissioned to produce the new six-episode series Breaking Ice for The Weather Channel.  The series goes aboard two giant icebreakers, one in the Arctic and one in the Antarctic.  Filming cuts back and forth between both sides of the planet to show the weather extremes and to take viewers aboard both icebreakers.  The half-hour series will tentatively premiere on TWC in late April 2013.

MTV2 has commenced production on a reality series featuring musician and entrepreneur Mac Miller and his four best friends as they depart from their hometown of Pittsburgh, PA and move to L.A.  The series will star Mac and his “Most Dope” crew as the rapper/producer puts the final touches on his new album, Watching Movies with the Sound Off.  The six-part series will premiere during first quarter 2013 on MTV2.   The network also set the season three premiere date of MTV2’s Guy Code for January 15 at 11p.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC was the victor Tuesday by delivering a 4.1/11 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS opened the night at 8p a winner with NCIS at 3.3/10 followed by an encore episode of The Voice on NBC at 2.4/7.  At 9p, NBC’s live season finale of The Voice won with a 4.8/13 and CBS moved back to second place with NCIS: Los Angeles at 3.0/8. NBC remained in first place during 10p with The Voice’s finale and the ratings boosted to a 5.0/14 and CBS’ Vegas was a distant #2 at 1.6/4 and Univision’s Amor Bravio was a close third at 1.5/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Showtime Networks Inc. (SNI) promoted Tom Christie to the newly-minted role as President/Distribution, Business Development and Network Operations.  Tom has been with Showtime for nearly 25 years and he will continue to supervise SNI’s affiliate sales team.  Next year, though, Tom will add the responsibility of planning and execution of future strategies and new business ventures as well as business operations to his duties.  Under his leadership, SNI has grown subscribers by 80 percent in the last nine years to the current tally of 22 million subscribers.

Starting in January Andrew Marcus advances to the newly-created role of COO at RelativityREAL.   The announcement was made by Tom Forman, CEO of RelativityREAL to whom Andrew will report.  Andrew previously was President/Corporate Development and Strategy for Relativity Media and will now concentrate on expanding RelativityREAL’s international finance and distribution practices.

Nathalie Lubensky was appointed SVP/Marketing, Networks for Sony Pictures Television (SPT).  In her new role, Nathalie will oversee global marketing and branding efforts for SPT’s networks portfolio that spans 159 countries and reaches more than 800 million homes.  In addition, Tom Keeter expands his role at SPT to that of SVP/Marketing, International Distribution and International Production.  Tom’s scope will now include oversight of all marketing efforts that support SPT’s international distribution and international production outside the US and for the US Hispanic marketing. 

The Hollywood Reporter upped Jonathon Aubry to VP/Consumer where he manages advertising and partnerships and also Debra Fink was named Executive Director/Independent Film and Talent.

AMC Networks Inc. added Kari-Michele Hauge as VP/Digital Sales and Marketing.  Kari will daily manage the electronic sell-through and subscription VOD partnerships across the company and its divisions: AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv.  Kari is based in New York and reports to Paul Rehrig, SVP/Business Development.
