Good morning, it’s Thursday, December 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Following actions by authorities in Europe, Japan, South Korea and New York State, the Federal Trade Commission has launched legal proceedings against chip giant Intel for a decade’s worth of anticompetitive business practices. The FTC, which is seeking to change how Intel shares its intellectual property with competitors, complained that Intel has used its dominant position to grow market share and stifle the innovation of other players. On the same day, the EU finally settled its remaining antitrust concerns with Microsoft. The company has agreed to fairly market rival web browsers alongside of Internet Explorer in the Windows operating systems it distributes across Europe.
Bookstore chain Borders struck a partnership with Kobo, Inc., a global eReading service that is the newly named spin-off of Toronto-based Indigo Books & Music Inc.’s “Shortcovers” digital reading initiative. NATPE President Rick Feldman unveiled an agenda and speaker line-up packed with sessions about tapping into new revenue streams for next Jan.’s annual confab yesterday – the final conference to be held in Las Vegas before heading to a two-year stint in Miami. After years of wrestling with the major syndication distributors to convince them to remain on the show floor, NATPE is compromising this year by shifting the floor to the basement of the Mandalay Bay, making it more convenient to shuffle back and forth from the suites up above. NATPE continues to aggressively transform itself from a syndication marketplace into a global multiplatform content bazaar and powwow. Tuesday keynote Michael Eisner, CEO of the Torrante Co., personifies the new strategy – a traditional media titan who is now trying to make a go of it in the digital world. While the show has been successful in getting new media players to replace the dwindling ranks of station folks, the economies of the show have changed, says Mr. Feldman. And next year’s move to Miami was made largely to make it cheaper for the majors to exhibit. “It’s not so much about attracting people,” he said. (NATPE’s attendance fell just short of 7,000 last year, despite the economic meltdown.) “The problem is that people who spend money in new media don’t represent as much money as station people once did. One is a transaction worth millions while a digital deal is worth thousands. When Sony has a huge booth, it’s hard to pay for it with transactions on that level.”
And a quick housekeeping note — after this Friday, Cynopsis will be off for the holiday, returning January 4, 2010. With that said, we will continue to post information on the home page of our website www.cynopsis.com, where we have just begun posting links to the releases we did not include within the emailed edition. That will continue thru our break.
