24-hour home of CBS Sports.
Cynopsis: Sports
08.08.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
In a big move, the United States Golf Association entered a 12-year deal to shift to FOX Sports. Included in the new agreement will be rights to the USGA and the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open Championships, as well as the USGA’s national amateur championships. The multi-media deal runs through 2026 and brings premier major championship golf for the first time ever to the FOX broadcast network. Of course, with the deal NBC, Golf Channel and ESPN will now lose longtime programming staples for their networks.
The agreement will see the USGA and FOX Sports deliver a total of 146 hours of championship golf, including a minimum of 70 cumulative hours of live event coverage of the three Opens. FOX Sports will also be home to the USGA’s national amateur championships and international team competitions, delivering a minimum of 76 hours of live broadcast coverage across its sports platforms, including FOX Sports 1.
ESPN has its lineup for this season’s Big Monday presented by Bud Light men’s college basketball slate, which will include the debut of the Atlantic Coast Conference as well as the return of the Big 12 into the fold. Games will run every Monday during conference play from January 13 to March 3, with the ACC will making its debut in ESPN’s weekly series in the 7p, with the Big 12 matchup set for 9p beginning with Virginia/Duke and Kansas/Iowa State. Other programming highlights will include all three new league members Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse featured at least once in the series, while North Carolina and Virginia get three spots and Duke and Maryland get two. For the Big 12 slate, Kansas and Oklahoma State will play four times on the schedule.
Last week (spanning July 29-August 4) marked MLB Network’s second-most watched regular season week ever based on total day viewership, with an average of 114,000 viewers according to Nielsen. That score is up 50% from the same week in 2012 and also ranked as MLB Network’s fifth-most watched regular season week ever in prime time with an average of 239,000 viewers, an increase of 59% over the same week in 2012.
ESPN is bring back its My Wish series for SportsCenter, which will feature the likes of NFL quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson, tennis champion Roger Federer, NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne and the Arizona Diamondbacks this year. The summer series chronicles sports-themed wishes by Make-A-Wishfor children with life-threatening medical conditions and will return Saturday, August 17, during the 11p edition of the show. Chris Connelly returns to reprise his hosting duties.
The ACC locked in the league’s bowl lineup for the 2014-19 seasons, with the AP reporting that the league will ship teams to the Military and AdvoCareV100 as well as the new, unnamed bowl in Detroit. The ACC will place teams in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in 2014 and 2016, joining the previously announced deals with the Orange, Russell Athletic, Capital One, Sun, Belk, Music City, Gator and Pinstripe bowls.
CBS Sports’ revs up for the new college football season with Gary Danielson, Tim Brando, Spencer Tillman and Brian Jones previewing expectations on CBS Sports’ College Football Preview Show. The special airs Sunday at 1p.
Speaking of CBS, CBS Sports Network carries its extended coverage of this weekend’s action with the PGA Championship Clubhouse Report starting tonight at 8p and running through Sunday. PGA Championship on the Range returns for its sophomore years on the network today as well, starting at 8:30a.
Golf Channel is set to carry over 27 hours of the Solheim Cup from Aug. 16-18. Coverage of the match-play competition will be anchored by two teams, with play-by-play host Terry Gannon joined by Judy Rankin, while Whit Watson and Curt Byrum will comprise the other team. The network’s planning themed coverage throughout the week including an expanded Morning Drive and wrap-around Golf Central shows.
Golf Channel will also see none other than Larry David join David Feherty for the season finale of Feherty on Monday, Aug. 12 at 9p. David will discuss his addiction to golf, his obsession with golf training aids, his inability to see Europe as America’s Ryder Cup foe, as well as golf’s unique capacity to leave him humiliated and miserable.
Warning, only a few spots left. From NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to the launch of FS1 to Turner’s David Levy to a league CMO Roundtable and more, don’t miss the action! Kudos to DIRECTV for its Eli and Peyton Manning rap video going viral. The famed brothers created a three-minute rap pushing Football on Your Phone for DIRECTV which has now drawn nearly three million views on YouTube. The act was filmed in one day in New Orleans.
All 32 NFL teams will be thanking fans this preseason via a Fan Appreciation Program that will see each club pick 90 fans to receive a personalized Nike team jersey from players, coaches and owners on the field ahead of the first preseason game.
CBS went on the offensive yesterday in its battle with Time Warner Cable, releasing a case study of the MSO’s cable and rights fees. The study pointed to the cable company’s recent deals with the Lakers and Dodgers, noting that half of Lakers games used to be on free over-the-air TV before “TWC outbid everyone for the rights for $3 billion” and “then created a Lakers channel charging subscribers $4/month whether they watch the games or not.” They also noted that neither the Lakers nor Dodgers TWC channels will be available to consumers on an a la carte basis. The report also noted that TWC is charging $20/month for “broadcast” television, 54% higher than two years ago.
Meanwhile, Time Warner Cable retaliated in a statement to The Wrap, noting “We partnered directly with the Lakers and Dodgers to cut out the expensive middleman and save our customers money in the long run. Since CBS O&O KCAL was, in fact, that middleman, it’s no surprise they disagree with our actions. We do find it ironic, however, that CBS would question moving sports off of broadcast, when they themselves announced in May that they were moving the Final Four to cable.”
