Computer security firm McAfee has uncovered a massive hacking effort dubbed Operation Shady RAT, (RAT standing for “remote access tool,”) penetrating some 72 organizations and government agencies around the world dating as far back as 2006. The company is not disclosing who the culprit is, apart from describing the guilty party as a “state actor,” but security analysts are reading between the lines of a blog post from Dmitri Alperovitch, McAfee’s VP/Threat Research, to point the finger at China – a longtime player in cyber intellectual property theft. One thing’s for sure – few industries are safe. “This is a problem of massive scale that affects nearly every industry and sector of the economies of numerous countries, and the only organizations that are exempt from this threat are those that don’t have anything valuable or interesting worth stealing,” wrote Alperovitch.
Time Inc. announced that the remaining 17 of its 21 U.S. magazines will be available in iPad, Android, HP and Next Issue Media tablet editions by year-end. The publisher also reached a deal with Barnes & Noble to sell digital subscriptions and single copy issues for the Nook Color starting later this month. As with Time, SI, People and Fortune, which each already have tablet versions, print subscribers will be offered the digital editions at no extra charge (the only way to buy an iPad subscription at present). Time says it has sold more than 600k single digital copies of the above books.
A service called iTunes Replay could arrive any day from Apple that would enable users to download and stream video content they’ve already purchased from iTunes to multiple devices in addition to the newly updated Apple TV set-top, according to a report from AppAdvice.
Major label music video service VEVO has expanded its syndication network once again, adding deals with sites such as ArtistDirect.com/Rogue Network (music news), Batanga (Hispanic music news), Gorilla Leak (indie music) and MeFeedia (video recommendations.)
A documentary series from “Super Size Me” and “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” creator Morgan Spurlock will be the first exclusive long-form original production bankrolled by Hulu. The ad-supported, 6 episodes series, “A Day in the Life,” will document Morgan following around famous personalities including Richard Branson and will.i.am. The first 22 min. episode premieres Aug. 17 and will be appear on both Hulu and Hulu Plus.
Brooklyn, NY-based social TV specialist SocialGuide introduced a Top 100 ranking of the most commented-upon TV shows, sortable by day, week or month. The service tracks comments, unique Facebook and Twitter users, followers and ave. number of comments per unique user. During the month of July, The Social 100 ranked VH1’s Basketball Wives as the most social program in primetime and Fox’s Family Guy as the most social program across all airings. Fox ranks as the top social TV network overall.
ComScore has agreed to acquire Seattle-based digital ad company AdXpose for $22 million, primarily in stock. AdXpose uses SaaS technology to help advertisers and publishers verify and optimize ad campaign data in real-time.
RadioShack is teaming with PointRoll to offer a localized Weekly Ad offering on Facebook. Users can browse their local RadioShack digital circular, published specific to their market, page-by-page and rollover items of interest to get more information. They can also browse the most popular items presented through a recommendation/aggregation engine. Brands can also take advantage of this feature to recommend special offers from specific manufacturer partners.
UK-based media technology company Red Bee Media, manager of such services and the BBC iPlayer and iTV Player, has acquired search, discovery and recommendation specialist TV Genius for an undisclosed amount. Red Bee’s rich metadata services will utilize TV Genius’ content discovery technology to deliver personally relevant recommendations and enhanced television guides across multiple platforms and devices.
Cloud-based video provider ActiveVideo has been awarded $115 million in damages from Verizon by a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia for intellectual patent infringement, related to Verizon FiOS’s VOD, remote control and interactive television offerings. Cablevision is among ActiveVideo’s CloudTV customers, an apps platform that ties together TV apps, web-to-TV apps, VOD navigation and social media sharing and recommendations.
Computer-based DVD rental service Zevida was slapped with a preliminary injunction from the MPAA this week, with a federal judge ruling that allowing users to play a DVD over the internet from afar constitutes as an unauthorized “public” video-on-demand service. Zevida’s virtual DVD service rents movies for $1.99 each or packages 10 rentals for $10 – far below the going rental rate for new digital releases. Zevida vowed to appeal the decision.
Cash-strapped WiMax-based 4G wireless internet provider Clearwire announced it will add “LTE Advance Ready” technology to its network, planning to offer the LTE option in major urban areas within existing WiMax markets at some point in the future.
Comcast is weathering the storm of cord cutting better than most MSOs, reporting a loss of 238,000 basic video subscribers during Q2, down from a loss of 265,000 basic customers a year earlier to leave the MSO with 22.53 million video subs. Consolidated Revenue Increased 50.5%, Operating Cash Flow increased 28.5% and Operating Income increased 41.4% during the period.
AOL’s daily free iPad magazine, Editions, is now up on the iTunes store, pushing the envelope in terms of tailored customization features. The interface asks the reader to identify his or her interests then it populates the app with news items and features you’re likely to be interested in, as well as top-trending stories from multiple sources. It’s also very socially plugged in, sourcing publications you follow on Facebook or Twitter for your news feed and reminding you of when its your Facebook friends’ birthday.
Hispanic broadcaster Univision launched a free Radio app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, featuring free Spanish and English-language audio streaming content from 45 Univision-owned radio stations. Users can access live feeds and pull up information about what’s playing including album reviews and song lyrics. Content categories include music genres, sports and video selections.
FX‘s 99-cent Sons of Anarchy iPhone app (free to those who bought the first one) has been updated to include new background info on the upcoming season. Three exclusive scenes have been shot for the app, providing a glimpse of what has been going on with SAMCRO members in the Stockton prison. An Android version of the app is also scheduled to launch next month, in time for the Sept. 6 season 4 premiere.
YuMe co-founder Jayant Kadambi is returning as CEO of the video ad optimization company, taking the place of Michael Mathieu who will remain on the company’s Board of Directors. Jayant has spent the past three years as President overseeing product development. YuMe also hired Tim Laehy as CFO.
Former CNN.com, Si.com and ESPN.com executive Mitch Gelman has been tapped as VP of Product at Gannett Digital, in charge of overseeing Gannett’s portfolio of web sites and mobile products, including local newspaper and broadcast sites and USAToday.com. He reports to Chief Digital Officer David Payne.
Jason Langley has been upped to EVP, North & South America of digital music licensing firm Audio Network, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month.

As businesses wait for Google+ to open up its network for official sponsored pages, they can avail themselves of a new self-serve resource introduced by location-based social networking service Foursquare (log-in required.) The template allows you to easily create branded pages that can manage check-ins and tips from the web or mobile phones, giving multiple people from the same organization access to manage and contribute to the offering. Since launching organizational pages back in Jan. 2010, some 3,000 businesses have created their own Foursquare pages including a number of television networks including MTV, CNN, Bravo and The History Channel. MTV’s Jersey Shore-themed “GTL badge” (a reference to show’s “Gym, Tan, Laundry” motto) has been a big hit, enticing thousands to check in to local gyms, tanning salons and laundromats within a 7-day period to show their support.
