Using the Dancing with the Stars popularity, ABC is launching a series midseason called Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann, with host Drew Lachey. Dancin’s judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba each pull together their own dance teams, and they do battle each week. The network has ordered up 6 episodes from BBC Worldwide America, according to Variety.
Merv Griffin’s Crosswords, presented by Program Partners and Merv Griffin Entertainment, has been cleared now in all 50 top markets, reaching more than 92% of the country. The last few to join up are WDRB-WMYO/Louisville, KOAT/Albuquerque, as well as stations in Green Bay, Cedar Rapids and Palm Springs. Crosswords debuts September 10
E! Entertainment TV has picked up three theatricals from NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution for their first basic cable premieres — Knocked Up, Evan Almighty and Man of the Year, reports Variety. The deal also includes secondary basic cable windows for Miami Vice, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Pride & Prejudice, Georgia Rule and Because I Said So. Total cost of the package – approx $40 million. Knocked Up will go to E! in October 2009 for a four year exclusive deal. The other titles are non exclusive, and USA has picked up a window for Man of the Year. USA also has the premiere windows of Chuck and Larry and Miami Vice; Oxygen has the first window for Pride & Prejudice and Georgia Rule.
ReelzChannel celebrates its first anniversary in September and during the same month the cable and satellite television network and broadband site devoted to movies will launch a new on-air and online programming blitz called ReelzChannel Awards Watch ’07-’08. ReelzChannel will provide coverage of all movie awards and festivals throughout the season starting next month through the Academy Awards event in February. Part of the programming initiative is to not only focus attention on the bigger award shows and festivals but highlight ones that receive lesser coverage, but are also important to the outcome of the Academy Awards. Throughout the season, the network will present seven original specials and special editions of its regular line-up, all focused on awards and festivals. Online coverage will include viewer polls, broadband offerings and handicapping of the awards plus a consumer sweepstakes. The multiple-month coverage begins with the 30m special Awards Watch: The Toronto International Film Festival on September 21 at 830p.
KNBC/Los Angeles renewed The Challenge, adding the show to its schedule beginning September 9 for a second 16-episode run. Expanding from 30m to a full hour, the weekly show, hosted by Fred Roggin, follows NBC4’s broadcast of Sunday Night Football. The Challenge combines NFL analysis, guest interviews, entertainment and real-time competition, where viewers can compete online or by cellphone for weekly, quarterly or grand prizes.
FYI – Starting September 4, WFLD-FOX/Chicago will change the name of its morning news program from FOX News in the Morning to Good Day Chicago.
