Cynopsis: DIGITAL

08/26/10

Good morning, it’s Thursday, August 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

American literary agent Andrew Wylie announced he is backing off a deal he signed with Amazon last month to give the Kindle a two-year exclusive eBook window to his authors’ works including John Updike, Normal Mailer and V.S. Naipaul, per the WSJ. Bertelsmann AG’ Random House, which publishes many of agent’s authors, boycotted the deal. Separately, Amazon announced that its newest generation of Kindles released 4 weeks ago, including the $139 Wi-Fi only model, are the fastest selling Kindles to date. (Faster by how much, we’ll never know because Amazon doesn’t disclose such things.) Topping the summer reading lists for Kindle owners are Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, Star Island by Carl Hiaasen and The Rembrandt Affair by Daniel Silva.

NFL.com, which added live video clips to the offering last year, is enhancing its to its NFL Fantasy Football platform once again this year, making video a more prominent feature. (To celebrate, the NFL is hosting its 5th annual Media Agency Fantasy Football Draft in New York tonight, a league which Carat won last year.) In addition to game highlights and video analysis, videos of significant fantasy scoring plays will be integrated into the platform as part of the site’s “Activity Feed” of breaking news. A new integration with EA Sports’ Madden NFL 11 game will also tie Madden Player rakings to NFL.com’s player projections. (Note: Drew Brees is the cover boy of Madden 11 this year, so those who believe in “the curse” should plan accordingly.)

NBC Universal Digital Studio‘s new comedy, FCU: Fact Checker Unit, based on a short of the same name that generated a lot of buzz at Sundance in Jan. of 2008, will be distributed across multiple territories this fall as it progresses through its first season. NBCU cable network Syfy will feature it on its digital platforms in the UK, on Syfy Universal throughout Asia/Pacific, via Sci Fi Channel in Australia and through the Syfy US iTunes storefront in the U.S. Like the original, which featured a cameo by Bill Murray, the webisodes feature lots of celebrity guest bits.

Multiplatform service Universal Sports will broadcast more than 176 hours of live coverage of each stage of the Vuelta a Espana beginning this Saturday, the season’s third and final Grand Tours of Cycling event. Live streaming on UniversalSports.com will be offered for $14.99 for the entire event.

Ah yes, beautiful girls. Coverage of the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant broke traffic records for Telemundo.com. Video-streaming jumped an astounding +7,548% as 846,000 total videos were streamed on the day of the show. Domestic page views were up 33% and unique visitors increased by 12%.

News Corp.
confirmed plans to consolidate its online ad network the Fox Audience Network in with its MySpace social networking ad platform following the departure of FAN President Adam Bain to Twitter, per Dow Jones. Fox has inked deals with large agency groups WPP and Omnicom Group during the past year, expanding its reach to over 150 million unique users – more than double the size of MySpace’s audience.

Online video ad platform Adap.tv unveiled a new partnership with Affine Systems to launch a new video targeting technology that analyzes in-stream video content frame-by-frame. The system is being marketed as a way to allow brand marketers to avoid placing their ads next to unseemly content. Adapt.tv’s “Brand Impact” offering provides ratings based on obscenity, production quality and violence and will leverage Vizu‘s “Ad Catalyst” product to offer real-time measurement and optimization for brand ad campaigns.

Attorneys General from 18 states penned a letter to Craigslist insisting the classified site should remove ads from its Adult Services section because it cannot effectively block or police users utilizing the site for prostitution and child trafficking. The site reached an agreement with 40 states’ Attorneys general in Nov. 2008 to implement new filtering and verification tools (deployed in May ’09) in an effort to weed out illegal ads. But Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who has led both efforts, has complained vociferously about Craigslist’s lack of follow through.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

African Americans talk or text on their cellphones more than any other ethnic group in the U.S. averaging more than 1,300 total voice minutes and 780 text messages per month, according to a Nielsen analysis of data from more than 60,000 mobile subscribers from April ’09 – March ’10. Hispanics are next in both categories, averaging 826 minutes/month and 767 SMS messages. Women also talk more than men, some 22% more or 856.3 minutes/month compared to 666.7 minutes/month for men. Teens send and receive far more text messages – an astounding 2,779/month, while the 18-24 demo use the most voice minutes (981 min./month). In terms of geographic location, Southerners are the most talkative. But while Florida (one of the oldest skewing states) ranks high in terms of monthly voice minutes used, it ranks very low for text messaging. Mississippi, on the other hand, ranks high for both talking and texting.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Google
is rolling out a new Voice-Over-IP calling feature to its free Gmail email service, launching initially for free U.S. and Canada calling. A new button in the Gmail interface, “Call Phones,” pulls up a keypad with a box where you can search your address book for names. Calls to other countries will be billed at Google’s posted international rates.

Toshiba
is planning to release a line of 3 “autostereoscopic” 3D televisions in time for the holidays that don’t require special glasses, according to the Yomirui Shimbun. Toshiba has developed a system that emits rays of light at various angles to create the illusion of dimension and depth, according to the report. Sales of 3D sets have been modest at best so far, and many contribute lack of consumer interest to those silly glasses.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

One shortcoming mentioned with Dish Network’s new TV Everywhere site is the lack of a recommendation engine. New York-based web start-up Taboola provides tools for publishers to enhance or replace their recommendation technology to get viewers to stick around longer and watch more videos. Taboola’s Video2Video product analyzes a site’s video content and users’ behavior then lays out five videos in an overlay appearing at the bottom of the screen. (Make that 4 videos – the 5th is a behaviorally targeted ad that monetizes the technology.) Tech-themed entertainment site Revision3 has been using the system and says its viewers are now 90% more likely to chain-view (click on another video after they finish watching one) than before they deployed the technology. Although the system relies on a publisher’s metadata to make its selections, the behavioral science that goes into the algorithmic formula is really what makes it successful because recommending another video a user might like isn’t always so obvious, according to Liz Hughes, VP of Biz Dev for Taboola. “People are complicated. But our system is learning all the time and every time a new publisher comes on board, they get the benefit of that learning,” she says.
