The following letter was delivered yesterday late in the day to the Apple Board of Directors and to the Apple Community from CEO Steve Jobs:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Facebook will be unveiling a massive update this week that tweaks and fixes a slew of issues (including privacy-related) users have had with the social network for years. The centerpiece to the update is the new tagging and privacy system. Specifically, you will now be able to approve all tags, including photo tags, before they show up in your profile. A queue of all pending tags will appear on your profile for you to decide. Furthermore, you will also now have the option of completely de-tagging a picture, or sending a request to your friend via a default message to take the offending photo down. Another major change is Facebook’s complete revamping of their ‘Places’ feature. Instead of mimicking Foursquare-style check-ins, you will now be able to add a location to all updates, regardless of how far away from the location you are. Furthermore, also unlike Foursquare, users who tag a certain location will have deals from nearby businesses pushed to them. Minor tweaks include a more direct access to your privacy settings and the Google+ style of disseminating statuses and content to different groups with Facebook, you can direct your updates to all your friends, the public, or “custom.”

Vizio’s tablet is the first Android tablet to offer Hulu Plus. The app is available for download immediately.

PMC and ION Television announced the launch of Entertainment News Television, a breaking news service that merges PMC’s entertainment news publications with ION Television’s viewership. ENTV will cull content from all of PMC’s entertainment brands, including deadline.com, HollywoodLife.com, TVLine.com and MovieLine.com, to deliver daily content on ION Television and the web at the same time.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Lunch Money, a mobile gaming company, unveiled a set of monetization and distribution tools for mobile game developers via the launch of their game, “Recess,” according to an article in TechCrunch. The game will offer a token system similar to those of arcade games. While the game will be free to download and will come with a set number of tokens, players will have to buy additional tokens once they run out. Co-founder Ari Mir also said that players will be able to transfer tokens across all Lunch Money games.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Google will write a check for $500 million to settle with U.S. lawmakers over charges that it displayed illegal ads for online Canadian pharmacies in the United States. The ads resulted in unregulated prescription drugs being imported into the U.S., said the Justice Department. According to the New York Times, Google has said that regulating these pharmacies on its site is akin to a cat-and-mouse game as these pharmacies routinely find ways to work around Google’s attempts to block their advertisements. However, websites are responsible for all ads on their sites. Google had set aside $500 million for a potential settlement of a Department of Justice investigation into its advertising practices, but the move decreased the company’s quarterly profit by 22%.

CityPockets, a digital storage service for vouchers and daily deals, has acquired DealBurner, a text messaging-based service that notifies users who check-in to Foursquare and Facebook Places of daily deals collected from popular deal sites such as Groupon Now and LivingSocial Instant. Current users will remain unaffected as the plan is, for now, to keep DealBurner on as a separate product. As part of the deal, Jason Fertel, founder of DealBurner, will become Chief Product Officer.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The Spanish-language network, MEXICANAL, has expanded its carriage deal to include viewers in New York. The network will be digitally broadcasted on WDVB 23.2.

Empire Film Group is partnering up with HotCloud Mobile, Inc. to develop a subscription-based mobile app. The agreement would enable Empire to use HotCloud’s FanMaxx app platform, which monetizes the fan bases for celebrities and entertainment companies, in an attempt to add value to their brand.

Grande Communications, a Texas-based TV and broadband service provider, announced an agreement with TiVo Inc. to promote the TiVo Premiere as the DVR-of-choice for Grande’s advanced television service. Slated to be launched later this year, the TiVo Premiere from Grande will integrate traditional TV, internet video, interactive apps and Grande’s VOD service into a single user interface.

Inergize Digital has signed up Intermountain West Communications Company for its Inergize Web CMS and News Synergy Mobile Apps. The deal will bring Intermountain West Communications Company’s local NBC-affiliated television stations in Nevada and Idaho new websites and mobile apps using Inergize’s platforms. The station’s websites on the Inergize Web CMS are available immediately while the mobile apps are in development.

Telemundo has tapped Fan Appz, a Facebook-preferred developer consultant, to help drive further engagement with the television network’s 2.5 million plus fans. The network will use Fan Appz’ publishing tools for their social media engagement campaigns that will include publishing custom content, interactive quizzes and polls and even sweepstakes.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The July Mobile Mix Report from Millennial Media revealed a 15% growth in mobile ad impression share for Android phones month-over-month. The result was a 61% overall share of smartphone impressions making it the eighth straight month Android has bested iOS. Other findings included:

  • Since March 2009, Apple, HTC and HUAWEI have more than doubled their share of impressions.
  • Windows 7 Phone impressions increased 71% month-over-month.
  • Broken down, 48% of ad spends came from Android phones versus 43% from iOS apps.
  • Gaming apps made up 29% of app impressions on the Millennial ad network.
  • Samsung grew 28% month-over-month as a manufacturer and was also the second-leading manufacturer after Apple.
  • Motorola was the 5th leading manufacturer and boasted 3 of the top 11 mobile phones.

In their U.S. Multiscreen Video Database study, In-Stat, a Scottsdale, Arizona-based researcher, estimates that 65% of the U.S. population will own a smartphone or tablet by 2015. The study further elaborates that it expects 86% of smartphone/tablet users will watch videos on their mobile devices while 60% will also view content from over-the-top (OTT) services at home.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

P2 Games brings you the “My 1st JCB” App designed for children aged 1-5 to enjoy learning while interacting with popular JCB characters via nine games and activities that include painting, jigsaw puzzles, a memory game, sorting game, racing game and even a game that lets players build their own vehicles. The app is available for $2.99 from iTunes and the App Store on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Richard Beattie has signed on with Vitrue for the newly created position of Vice President, EMEA. Directly reporting to CEO & Founder Reggie Bradford, he will oversee Vitrue’s international business growth, channel development and continuing support of current global clients. The appointment also coincides with the opening of Vitrue’s London offices.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

By now you know, and most likely have played, “Words with Friends.” Now, meet its incredibly addicting sister game, “ Hangin’ with Friends” by Zynga and available as an App on iTunes. The set-up is similar in that you bring your encyclopedic knowledge of obscure words to school some unsuspecting friend or fool with a less-than-stellar vocabulary. However, instead of playing a game of Scrabble, this time you play hangman. The biggest difference, and the reason the game is so addictive, is in the features that you get that are unavailable with a Scrabble-type game. Specifically, each player chooses their own avatar. You, and your visual representative, are given five blown-up balloons. Every time you fail at guessing your opponent’s word correctly, a balloon pops, sending your avatar, who for some reason is hanging from these five balloons, closer to the abyss. The name of the game, then, is simple: kill or be killed, with words! And did I mention that you get to watch a replay of your opponent attempting to solve your word? Trust me, you’ll squeal when they get down to the last strike and need only one letter. Well, at least I do.
