Good morning, it’s Thursday, August 21, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Comcast has come up with a new remedy for keeping bandwidth hogs from slowing down the network for everyone. The MSO plans to penalize them by slowing down their connections to a crawl for a period of 10 to 15 minutes, according to Bloomberg, after which their connections would return to normal. Only this time the company promises not to discriminate against users based on the application they’re using. (Comcast formerly blocked users from accessing BitTorrent, which got it into trouble with the FCC.) The only problem with this approach is that users watching video from legitimate sites will also be affected, whether they’re streaming free TV episodes from ABC.com or watching a movie from Netflix. At $59.95/month, is it too much to ask to be able watch video online?
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Capitalizing on the family blogging trend Disney’s Family.com launched a social networking site exclusively for parents with many of the usual community features including the ability to create profiles, network with other moms and dads and join groups based on shared interests. Innovations here include liberal use of widgets (covering cooking tips, travel destinations, exercise regimes and photo sharing) and little profile stickers parents can use to call attention to traits or hobbies that best describe them.
 
Bilingual kids entertainment site qubo entered into a partnership with kids non-profit KaBOOM to advance the concept of active play in communities across America. The initiative includes a marketing campaign comprised of on-air and online promos, PSAs, print ads and conferences.
 
The fourth annual New York Television Festival will feature its first “Digital Day” this year, consisting of screenings, panels and seminars dedicated to emerging media platforms. The festival runs Sept. 12-17 at New World Stages in Midtown Manhattan with Digital Day taking place Tues, Sept. 16.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Here are some anthropological stats to describe the YouTube phenomenon, courtesy of Kansas State University professor Michael Wesch, who gave a lecture on the Ethnography of the online video last month at the Library of Congress. He begins with the watershed webcam taping of Numa Numa shortly before YouTube launched. Fascinating stuff!

  • 9,232 hours of video is uploaded to the site/day (equivalent of 385 24/7 TV channels)
  • 200,000 3 minute videos are uploaded on average per day (many getting <100 views)
  • 88% of the content is new and original

 
Ad supported music video portal Muzu.TV signed a content deal with UK broadcaster ITN giving the site access to 80,000 hours of content from its archive. The deal includes videos from Reuters, Granada, Channel 4 interviews and performances as well as daily music news and interviews from ITN’s multimedia division ITN On.
 
Ebay
lowered its up front listing fees for fixed price items by as much as 70% to compete with other online auction sites. Beginning Sept. 16 sellers pay 35 cents to list fixed price items and just 5 cents for “Buy It Now” fixed priced listings in the media category (books, DVDs, video games, music.)
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Palm unveiled the Treo Pro yesterday running on the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform with built in WiFi and GPS capabilities. It’s the thinnest Treo to date, despite boasting a 400 MHz processor and a 2 megapixel camera. What’s really remarkable about it, though is that it’s shipping in the U.S. unlocked, compatible with the AT&T broadband network. That said, don’t expect any carrier subsidies. The Treo Pro is expected to ship in September for $550.
 
A new live real time scoring app on Turner Sports’ PGAtour.com tracks each individual golf shot made by individual players on tour. The visual interface allows you to see where each player is on the hole in set pairings or in customized alignments selected by the user. Pull it up on your desktop to track how your favorite player is faring this weekend at the Barclays, the first tourney of the FedExCup Tour Playoffs.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Hot gaming console maker Nintendo faces a patent challenge from Rockville, MD-based B2B software maker Hillcrest Labs. Hillcrest filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission alleging the Wii’s differentiating motion-sensing controller infringes on four of its patents relating to a handheld three-dimensional pointing device and a system it designed that graphically organizes content for display on television. The company is hoping to force Nintendo to pay for use of the technology.
 
Move Networks completed an upgrade of its media player optimized for use on mobile internet devices powered by Intel Atom Z5 processors based on the Moblin Linux operating system. The integration will allow device manufactures to build in support for the popular Move Player, used to stream HD quality video for clients such as ABC, Discovery and Fox.
 
Hollywood film processing company Deluxe Digital Studios has chosen Signiant‘s digital media distribution technology to automate, accelerate and secure the distribution of post-production materials for motion pictures. The digital file-based technology will allow Deluxe to implement an automated and secure global transmission process over existing internet connections, ultimately providing studios with more flexibility in an era of last-minute release date changes and simultaneous domestic and international releases.


~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Online publisher Broadband Enterprises introduced new contextual and behavioral ad targeting capabilities to its Vindico video platform powered by start-up Digital Element. DE’s  “geolocation” technology improves audience segmentation capabilities and targeting based on parameters including geographic location (country, region, state, city and zip code); connection speed; Internet Service Provider; language; domain name; and demographics.
 
Viral marketing specialist Feed Company made hay (or honey) with a recent viral marketing campaign for Haagen-Dazs launched to raise awareness about the dwindling population of honey bees. Feed helped promote a viral video produced by agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners that generated over 2 million aggregate views and was “buzzed” about in more than 150 blog posts and 11,000 forum discussions. Not since the first season of Saturday Night Live have people in bee costumes made such an impact.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The Olympic marathon being run over web traffic is being won down the stretch by Yahoo not NBC, according to the latest Nielsen online data. More than halfway through the games Yahoo has steadily picked up steam to average 4.7 million unique visitors vs. NBC’s 4.2 million, through Monday. Data shows that traffic to NBCOlympics.com peaks at noon (during workers lunch break, when folks are normally watching episodes of The Office.)

Panel-based research firm Hitwise created a new category to measure top visits to the top 30 U.S. cable network TV show websites. As with broadcast show sites, the list is broken down by market share and excludes sports and pay sites. And because young users dominate much of the traffic on the web (5 of the top 10 sites were Cartoon Network shows), Hitwise created a separate list eliminating children’s programming from the equation.

The Mommy blogosphere officially grew by one yesterday when iVillage’s Momtourage got its own URL. Right now Momtourage is a cleanly organized collection of features geared toward giving practical advice to Moms. It’s meant to be a welcoming haven for mothers to turn to for a sense of community and belonging, says the site’s editor Marissa Rothkops-Bates. Momtourage will rely on staff members from iVillage and a pool of freelancers (including well-known guest bloggers) to fill out the content on the site. iVillage will need to leverage more of its NBCU assets to compete in the competitive Mommy blog space. The overall woman’s category has grown like gangbusters during the last year – up 35% according to comScore, hotter than any other vertical besides politics. And corporate media concerns will always have trouble standing out against unique voices like Heather B. Armstrong’s Dooce, known for her brutal frankness and gleeful political incorrectness.
