Google’s forthcoming Google TV product, which will once and for all provide a simple interface from which to access IP video through your television, may be striking fear into the hearts of the networks. The company has met with ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and so far none have agreed to support the platform because they are skeptical its business model (auction-style ads) could make up for the cannibalization of the networks’ broadcast business, according to a report in the WSJ. Of course, there’s also plenty of concern on the part of the cable and satellite companies, who worry that Google TV could become a ubiquitous over-the-top platform that will encourage their subscribers to unplug their expensive pay TV packages. On the other hand, there’s also the very palpable fear that the Pandora’s Box is going to be opened whether the networks partner with Google or not.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Social gaming giant Zynga announced the beta launch of its first internationally localized game, Zynga Texas Poker, in traditional Chinese. Based on the company’s first game launched in July 2007, the top Facebook poker game is now available on Facebook in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
 
Online and VOD service ExerciseTV has partnered with Intent.com founder Mallika Chopra, daughter of Deepak Chopra, to add a new meditation themed channel. Ommm.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Digital advertising technology start-up Oggifinogi secured its series A funding led by Greycroft Partners, with participation from iNovia Capital and Contour Venture Partners, among others.  The Bellevue, WA and New York, NY-based company, which recently hired former Babelgum EVP Michael Rosen as President, builds tools for marketers who buy audience-based media through advertising exchanges, demand side platforms, agency trading desks, ad networks and branded publishers.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun’s Berman Braun Productions penned a deal with Starcom MediaVest Group giving the agency’s clients a first-look sponsorship option for all of the producer’s online content, per AllThingsD. The deal, involving brands such as Wal-Mart, P&G and Coke, could be worth north of $100 million.
 
Video ad platform ShortTail Media has partnered with web video network TidalTV agreeing to cross-market each other’s video ad products. ShortTail, who works with sites such as EW.com, is known for its D:30 video ad interstitial unit while TidalTV, a partner in WPP’s GroupM advanced television initiative, sells in-stream video ads for clients including McClatchy newspaper sites.
 
The IAB unveiled the 16 member companies that are the first to commit to comprehensive self-certification against the IAB Networks & Exchanges Quality Assurance Guidelines, designed to enable the industry to police itself and ward off government regulation of contextual ads. The companies who have agreed to complete the process by early 2011 include: 24/7 Real Media, Adify, AOL/Advertising.com, AudienceScience, Burst Media, Casale Media, ContextWeb, Inc. / ADSDAQ Exchange, CPX Interactive, Fox Audience Network, Google, ScanScout, Specific Media, Traffic Marketplace, Tremor Media, Yahoo and ValueClick Media.
 
Discovery’s TLC.com is partnering with Volkswagen to promote the Routan minivan in a multifaceted campaign, with the automaker exclusively sponsoring family travel content on the site and the van being featured in an original web series dubbed “ The Great Getaway.”
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Time’s People magazine’s upcoming iPad app is being delayed because of a licensing dispute with paparazzi, reports THR. The notoriously cutthroat community, or rather the agencies that represent it, are banding together to try and secure additional compensation for photos that appear on the app, which People plans to charge $5 to purchase.
 
The success of leading 3D projection and viewing vendor RealD depends upon Hollywood continuing to produce 3D movies but the higher cost of doing so may lead to studios to pare back their 3D slates, per the WSJ. One of the stumbling blocks continues to be the lack of screens – there is currently about 6,000 3D screens in North America, double the amount from last year.
 
Wearable display maker Microvision announced it has secured an equity-financing facility, enabling the company to sell up to $60 million of its shares of common stock to Azimuth Opportunity Ltd.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Google’s share of search in the U.S. fell slightly from 66.2% in June to 65.8% in July, with Yahoo (up from 16.7% to 17.1%) picking up the slack, according to comScore. The figures represent a change in methodology by the company, which is mining data based on “explicit core searches” to highlight the impact of contextually driven searches. Google’s share also fell on Total Core searches.
 
Hitwise‘s panel-based search measurement had Google’s share also declining in July, but by a much smaller margin. Google enjoyed 71.43% of U.S. searches, (down from 71.65%).
 
The Android OS continued its rapid growth in July on the Millennial Media ad network expanding by another 47% month-over-month to account for 39% of the platform’s usage – second only to Apple devices at 49%. Android, which has grown 690% since Jan. on the network, also officially became the number two OS on the Millennial network, surpassing RIM. The iPad also began to pick up steam as an ad device, with iPad requests growing by 327% month-over-month.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Listen up Music Fans – major label music video venture Vevo has launched its first free iPhone/iPod Touch app, providing unlimited access to some 20,000 videos from 7,000 different artists. Navigate among Top, Premiere or New videos, build playlists or search by artists or song title. There’s even a cool feature allowing you to see what videos are being watched around your location. Many of the videos aren’t available through the YouTube app that comes pre-installed on the phone. The app won’t work on the iPad but Vevo says it is working on a native iPad app for later this year.
 
Sony announced it is introducing its Wii-like motion-based PlayStation Move controller next month as part of a new PS3 bundle that includes an updated version of the console and a suite of new Move-controlled sports games. The Move 320 GB bundle is shipping on Sept. 17 for $399.
 
Microsoft revealed plans to tie its Windows 7 mobile operating system to the Xbox 360 platform, enabling Windows 7 users to connect to their Xbox Live accounts from their phones. The integration will begin with 50 Xbox titles but will expand to further casual and hardcore games in the future, according to MocoNews.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Walker Jacobs has been upped to EVP of Turner/SI Digital Ad Sales. A Turner veteran since ’07, he will continue to oversee ad sales and integrated marketing solutions across the web, VOD and mobile platforms. Walker will also continue to report to David Levy, President of Sales, Distribution and Sports for Turner Broadcasting Systems, in New York.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Video sharing site Vimeo, a subsidiary of IAC, launched a new hybrid version of its embeddable video player that can support either Flash or the Apple-preferred HTML5. The player also added a feature allowing you to save videos for later viewing. YouTube has reportedly been working on a similar solution but haven’t gotten there yet, so kudos to Vimeo for recognizing that the Flash/HTML5 war will not be decided for years. Finally, New York-based Vimeo completed an integration with Roku to allow users to view their videos on their broadband-connected televisions. 
 
Note: Foursquare, the breakout location-based mobile app that captured the media industry’s attention at the SXSW conference a year ago, is being utilized by local businesses and TV networks alike (such as Bravo and MTV) to generate buzz and reward loyal viewers. It’s grown so quickly that it has been the envy of Silicon Valley for months, and reportedly the target of a takeover by Facebook. It’s also been an open secret that Facebook is working on a location-based component of its own and the company called a press conference late yesterday afternoon to announce it, broadcasting it live on the new Facebook Live streaming channel, of course. However the broadcast was horribly delayed past my deadline, but click on the link and I assume you’ll find an archived version of the event.
