Sales of virtual goods via social, console, online and other games will rise this year to $2.1 billion, nearly double its haul in 2009, according to a new report from eMarketer, citing data from Inside Network. Much of that growth is being driven by console, casual and mobile games. In fact, half of all gamers say they have used real money to buy virtual goods or currency in connected console games, whereas only 31% of social gamers have bought virtual goods, according to PlaySpan and VGMarket data. However, social games are still growing. The sales of virtual goods in social games will hit $792 million in 2012, up from $653 million this year, eMarketer said. Because of the high consumer engagement in social and online games, marketers are tracking this area closely and spending money to advertise within and around online games.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

BET plans to launch a new original Web series 8 Days a Week on Aug 24 that’s based on the book series The Come Up. The scripted Web show is BET’s first in-house produced Web show and will run on BET.com in ten parts.
 
DirecTV added Sportsman Channel to its on-demand lineup. Sportsman On Demand includes short-form and long-form programming that is refreshed every two weeks and includes some of the network’s signature shows. DirecTV said its on-demand lineup now includes more than 6,000 shows and movies.
 
Cross-platform network EPIX said it will carry Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale concert in November on its service on TVs, on-demand, online and on Internet-connected devices.
 
Hulu continues to expand into the originals department with the launch of the new series A Day in the Life with popular documentary director Morgan Spurlock. The six-episode series will look into the life of fascinating people like entrepreneur Richard Branson and rapper will.i.am. 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Another social TV technology firm has landed venture funding. Umami, slated to launch this fall with enhanced second screen technology for TV networks, raised $1.65 million in seed funding from Battery Ventures, NEA and angel investors for its companion TV technology.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Content discovery technology company Rovi Advertising struck a deal with Ford to power interactive ads for various Ford car brands across the Rovi Ad Network that reaches 40 million homes globally. The immersive ads will run on Rovi guides, which deliver TV listings across a range of set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and other TV devices.

Consumers are most inclined to sit through video ads when they run in longer-form online video programming, rather than short videos, according to a new report from online video ad technology firm FreeWheel. The company said in its quarterly report that video ad completion rates are about 81% for content that is more than 20 minutes, compared to 59% for short-form content.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Amazon is a powerful company indeed. ComScore said that Amazon sites reach the largest global audience among retail and auction sites, logging more than 282 million visitors in June representing 20.4 percent of the world’s Internet population. That puts Amazon ahead of eBay globally and China’s Alibaba.com corporation.
 
Within a year, we’ll reach for our mobile phones nearly as quickly as our laptops to access the web, according to a new study from GlobalWebIndex. About 37% of consumers say they expect to use a mobile phone or tablet first for Internet access 12 months from now, compared to 42% who say a PC will still be their first choice. That’ll be a big change from current habits ­ about 79% of consumers still say a PC or laptop is their first pick for Web access.
 
More than half of consumers in the U.S. Have Internet-connected devices in their living rooms, but only 22% of gaming console owners and only 18% of Apple TV and Roku owners use them to stream a movie or TV show, according to research from New Media Measures.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Mobile viewing is commanding a growing portion of Break Media video views, the company said. It’s generated 10 million monthly mobile visits and 100,000 unique mobile app visits per day now. Also, Break has logged more than 1.5 million downloads of its app since launch in early 2010.

Most consumers are turning to apps for pleasure, according to a new research report from MTV Networks Consumer Research. The programming giant looked at mobile app usage and found that 91% of respondents said apps expose them to new things, 70% said apps make the rest of life better, and 87% said apps let them have fun no matter what they’re doing. In addition, 75% of respondents said apps give them time to relax and about the same also said apps give them more time to connect with friends and family. Most people learn about apps through recommendations and word of mouth.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Mere days after Google announced plans to acquire Motorola Mobility, the mobile company said William R. Hambrecht, the banker, will step down from the board of directors. Motorola Mobility CEO noted that Hambrecht had played an instrumental role in the sale to Google.

Online video ad network Tremor Video hired Anthony Flaccavento as New York Entertainment Sales Director. He’ll focus on NY-area entertainment clients and TV networks, the company said. Tremor said it’s dedicating more resources to entertainment, one of its strongest verticals.
