Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Canada’s Cookie Jar Entertainment will eliminate jobs following its recent acquisition of US-based DIC Entertainment for $87.6 million, per THR.  The report cites Cookie Jar CEO Michael Hirsh explaining that a full “integration plan” will be announced on August 26, with most of the cuts expected to hit the DIC offices.  A separate deal with Andy Heyward, DIC founder, has already been struck.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go will kick off new series and new seasons of a number of series on Labor Day, Monday, September 1 (check local listings for times):

  • Sid the Science Kid (40×30) – the new preschool educational animated series that focuses on exploration, discovery and science readiness from The Jim Henson Company and KCET/Los Angeles
  • Martha Speaks (40×30) – the goal of the series, which follows the adventures of a talking dog, is to bolster the vocabulary of preschoolers through storytelling and humor.  The series also includes interstitial moments between 11-minute episodes that help to reinforce vocabulary.  From WGBH Boston and Studio B Productions, Inc., Martha Speaks is based on the kid’s book series by Susan Meddaugh.
  • A third season of Curious George (15×30) kicks off on PBS Kids! on Monday, September (check local listings for times).  This new season features Curious George and The Man with the Yellow Hat as they head out around the world where they will explore Earth Science and thus educating preschoolers on topics including recycling, composting, and solar power among others.  Based on Margret and H.A. Rey’s Curious George books, published by Houghton Mifflin, the series is a production o f Imagine Entertainment, WGBH Boston, and Universal Studios Family Productions.
  • The Electric Company – aimed at K6-9 and produced by Sesame Workshop, The Electric Company s going to ‘bring us the power’ beginning January 2009 on PBS Kids Go!

Dork Hunters from Outer Space premieres in the UK on GMTV this Sunday, August 17.  BKN International has already ordered a second season of the series for 2009.  Another BKN property, Zorro- Generation Z, will begin airing in many markets later this year and the toys will begin rolling out early in 2009.  Season II in HD will be available in fall 2009.

Also in the UK, among the shows that will figure in ITV’s fall lineup is Britannia High, a musical series that revolves around a closely-knit group of six teens at a performing arts school.  Additionally, this fall the network will televise kid/family movies including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and King Kong.

Sorpresa has secured the exclusive Spanish-language distribution rights to Hispanic virtual world Club Time Machine from vWorld Corporation Ltd. for the United States and its territories as well as the non-exclusive rights to the English version. For $5.95/month, $29.50/6 months or $56.50/year kids can join Club Time Machine www.sorpresatv.com/clubtimemachine and create their own “Hoover” avatars that fly around, earn gold to trick out their rockets with, play games and socialize with other kids.

X Games Mexico will take place in Mexico City for the second year in a row on September 20-21, at the Palacio de los Deportes, with coverage of the events featured on ESPNESPN International in producing five hours of original programming including the highlights of these games. In addition, ESPN 2 will broadcast 2.5 hours of live on September 20 and 21.  The X Games Mexico, which is for all ages, features athletes competing in extreme sports including BMX Freestyle Street, Skateboard Street, Moto X Best Trick and Moto X Freestyle and Best Whip.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BKN International appoints new licensing and merchandising agents for Dork Hunters from Outer Space and Zorro – Generation Z in a range of regions:

  • Dork Hunters from Outer Space will be represented by: Merchantwise Pty Ltd in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Zorro – Generation Z will be repped by: Spacetoon International in the Middle East; Medialink in South Asia; Zero A Oito in Portugal; Doce in Chile; and Black and White in Greece.
  • Dork Hunters and Zorro will both be repped by: Kidz Entertainment A/S in Eastern Europe and Russia; and ITC Licensing in Brazil.

The Cheetah Girls will head out on their 50-date nationwide The Cheetah Girls One World Tour beginning October 8, 2008 in Austin, Texas and running through December 21, when the tour winds things up in Sand Diego, California.  The tour features the soundtrack of the Disney Channel original movie, The Cheetah Girls one World, which debuts Friday, August 22 on the network.  The new Cheetah Girls tour is produced by Disney Music Group’s production division Buena Vista Concerts.

Channel One News, the tween/teen-aimed news content provider, teams with The Allstate Foundation to launch a multi-platform teen driving campaign during the 2008-9 school year.  The goal of the campaign is to educate teens about being smart drivers by encouraging positive peer influence to change the way teens think and act in the car, as both drive or passenger.  As part of the initiative, materials and resources will be available to teachers via Channel One Connection.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Marie Chappelow is tapped as Commercial Director/Parthenon Kids, the kid-centric division of Parthenon Entertainment Group. As the new head of Parthenon Kids, Chappelow will oversee TV distribution and co-production fundraising sales and acquisitions, working closely with the licensing and merchandising division.  Chappelow joins Parthenon from HIT Entertainment, where she served as VP/Programming Distribution.

Rekha Shah joins CCI Releasing as Director of Sales for its international sales team.  Shah, who begins next month, will be responsible for sales across Asia, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa and Canada as well.  She was most recently, Director/Television Distribution, Alliance Films.  But if in the recesses of your mind Rekha Shah’s name sounds familiar to you for another reason … maybe that is because she was part of the ensemble cast of Nickelodeon’s You Can’t Do That on Television (1986-89) and went on to play Janice in the network’s series Fifteen, she also served as the host of TVOntario’s weekend kid’s block, The Nook.
