The iPhone will face its toughest test to date as Motorola‘s hotly anticipated Droid 2 ($200 w/ a 2 year Verizon contract) hits stores on Thursday, the first phone to run on Google’s new Android 2.2 operating system and the first to ship with the ability to play Adobe Flash 10.1. This means that users will be able to go to any broadcast website and view full episodes of TV shows, and enjoy all the requisite sharing features. It also sports a 5-megapixel camera and a 1 Ghz processor, making DVD-quality video capture possible. The launch represents a moment of truth of sorts for Adobe’s Flash technology, which has been unceremoniously booted off all Apple products. It is the first of several upcoming handsets that will support the Flash 10 player, including the HTC Incredible, the Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Milestone, Droid X.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The PBS WORLD 24/7 multicast channel featuring documentary, nonfiction and news programming announced it is expanding its content and audience platforms with two grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The grants, totaling $2.5 million, funded a recently completed research and development project focused on increasing access and inclusion for the WORLD service, implementation of a web presence and the fourth year of the WORLD television channel.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Mobile phone image recognition technology developed by Pongr will be featured in the Sept. issue of Marie Claire magazine presented as the “Snap to Buy” program. Users will be able use their handsets to snap a picture of products to pull up more information, access offers or to purchase products directly from more than 200 luxury brands.
 
LGBT publisher Echelon Magazine has launched its first two digital magazines, providing sharing features and links additional information from advertisers.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Leading U.S. satellite TV broadcaster DirecTV, the second largest multichannel video distributor in the U.S. behind only Comcast, has signed a deal with Google to sell commercial time on a selection of lower-rated channels including Bloomberg, G4, Fox Business and TV Guide. The auction-based Google TV ads system will resell commercial time on the platform, as it has been doing on Dish Network. When combining the two, marketers – who can use the system to target specific demos – will be able to reach 33 million homes in all. Google announced a deal with Dish last spring to integrate the upcoming Google TV platform with Dish Network’s set top boxes, but no such deal with DirecTV has been yet been reached.
 
Interactive video technology provider Qoof is introducing an in-video advertising app platform this morning, allowing advertisers to easily insert custom apps into existing rich media assets that can then be distributed across third-party players and multi-screen advertising platforms – including websites, affiliate networks, ad networks, social media outlets and social gaming locations. The platform provides historical and real-time reporting capabilities that can monitor each app independently to help clients determine which app is best moving the needle. Qoof offers a pre-existing library of apps including photo viewers, customer reviews, product and pricing information, store availability and in-player checkout.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Comcast EVP David L. Cohen suggested that the company has no incentive to withhold NBC programming from Pay TV competitors online and noted that placing government restrictions now on new online business models before they have time to develop would have a detrimental affect on the Comcast/NBCU merger, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Comcast has begun taking out full page ads in several D.C.-focused publications to plead its case to government officials and has already spent an estimated $90 million on the merger.
 
Apple‘s Japan subsidiary has agreed to replace first generation iPod nano MP3 players that have overheating problems, per Reuters.
 
Online video platform provider Ooyala unveiled an iPhone app that allows publishers upload and publish video directly from the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
U.S. Broadband penetration improved only slightly from a year ago, from 63% to 66% of American adults, according to a new Pew Internet & American Life study conducted among a sample of 2,252 adults. African Americans represented one bright spot, growing from 46% last year to 56% penetration – a 22% increase, with the gap between whites and blacks shrinking to 11 points. But 29% of U.S. adults still aren’t broadband-connected and don’t seem to be in a hurry to do so. The 21% of the Americans who don’t use the internet at all say they’re “just not interested” (31%), don’t have a computer (12%) or find it “too expensive” (10%). When asked if they know enough about computers and technology to start using the internet on their own, just one in five non-users (21%) say that they do while six in ten (61%) say that they would need someone to help them.
 
After a 10% Q1 spike, E-Commerce sales again crept up 9% during Q2 from a year ago to reach $32.9 billion, according to ComScore, a cause for cautious optimism going forward. Consumer Electronics (excluding peripherals), Computer Software, Computers/Peripherals/PDAs, and Books & Magazines were among the best selling categories.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Encouraged by the 3 million+ sales of the iPad, Dell will begin taking presale orders for its Streak tablet today and begin selling it in stores on Friday. Previewed at CES in Jan., the 5″ touchscreen Streak adds the ability to actually make calls (it sells for $300 with a 2 year AT&T contract and $549 without one), but it does not run on the new Android OS (it runs on an older version) and does not as of yet support Flash.
 
Nintendo says it has now sold more than 30 million Wii’s in the U.S. in just 45 months, making it the fastest selling gaming console ever.
 
Just in time for the PGA Championship, Comcast’s Golf Channel has upgraded its mobile apps for the iPhone and Android and launched an enhanced mobile WAP site targeting BlackBerry smartphone users. New content includes instructional video tips (how do you hit the ball straight when it’s above your feet?), equipment info., golf course profiles and the ability to create customize leaderboards to follow only the players you are interested in.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Multiplatform horror hub FEARNet has hired Lionsgate’s Peter Block to serve as President and GM of the company, a joint venture between Sony Pictures Television, Lionsgate and Comcast. Peter oversaw the production of a slew or horror features at the studio including the lucrative “Saw” franchise. He replaces Diane Robina, who served as the President of FEARNet while also working at the TV Guide Network. Diane will remain with FEARNet through the fall, before turning her full attention to Lionsgate’s TV Guide Network as EVP/Programming, Production and Marketing.
 
Former head of digital for Michael Eisner’s Topps division Steve Grimes has been tapped as SVP/Digital Media for MTV Network’s Comedy Central. He reports to Erik Flannigan, EVP of the division, in the network’s New York City office.
 
Rob Ellis has been appointed Managing Director of UK interactive media services company Telecom Express.

Elektra Records has launched elektra60.com, an interactive website powered by Cisco’s Eos media platform to celebrate Elektra’s 60 years in the music business. (Wait for it, it takes a while to load.) The site revolves around a timeline that allows you to scroll all the way back to 1950 and pull up sample tracks and album profiles of previous Elektra releases, or filter your selection by artist or media. For instance, click on The Doors to find biographical info, a few tracks and a couple of live grainy videos from back in the day (such as renditions of “Roadhouse Blues” and “Light My Fire.”) Or check out this live footage of Bob Dylan contemporary Phil Ochs, singing I Ain’t Marching Anymore, one of the gone but not forgotten artists signed by Electra Founder and Chairman Jac Holzman. Elektra’s use of the Eos platform (the Timeline interface was designed by the digital agency Rokkan) builds on a growing partnership between Cisco and Warner Music, Elektra’s parent company, to create interactive, immersive sites to help fans reconnect with old favorites and perhaps stumble upon something new.
