Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 05, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBC Sports Group is giving the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials a primetime showcase. The United States Olympic Committee and the NBC Sports Group announced that the television schedule for the Trials will score a record 67.5 hours of event coverage, including 43 on NBC Sports Network and 24.5 on NBC. Broadcasts will spotlight 10 sports, including live primetime coverage of trials for diving, swimming, gymnastics and track & field, as well as events for water polo and field hockey. Coverage begins on Sunday, April 22, on NBC Sports Network with wrestling competition from Iowa City, Iowa, and wraps up on Sunday, July 8, with the U.S Women’s Water Polo Olympic Team taking on the Chinese Olympic Team. In addition, NBC Sports Network and Universal Sports will re-air a combined 117 hours of trials coverage.
The NFL released its preseason schedule, with notable games that include Manning’s new team, Tebow, and, in all likelihood Andrew Luck. Of course, NFL Network kicks things off with the previously announced Cardinals/Saints Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 5.
CBS, which will host Super Bowl XLVII, is offering two preseason games this season, including a Bears/Giants matchup on Friday, Aug. 24 at 8p before wrapping up with the Texans and Saints the next night on Aug. 25 at 8p
ESPN will televise four games as part of its preseason schedule beginning Thursday, August 9 with a Packers/Chargers game at 8p. Other contests include Cowboys/Raiders on Aug. 13, Eagles/Patriots on Aug. 20 and Cardinals/Titans on Aug. 23. All of the games will run at 8p. In addition, ESPN Deportes will once again offer a Spanish-language production of MNF preseason and regular season games in 2012.
FOX gets the ball for three preseason games. The action starts on Thursday, Aug. 16 at 8p featuring the Bengals/Falcons. The next night finds the Lions/Ravens. FOX’s preseason wraps up on Aug. 26 with the 49ers/Broncos.
On NBC, the SNF preseason kicks off on Sunday, August 19 with the Steelers hosting the Colts, who own the first pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The second matchup showcases the Jets and Panthers on Aug. 26. Both games will run at 8p.
ESPN’s telecast of Baylor beating Notre Dame for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, handed the channel with 3.2 rating, 3,137,000 households and 4,244,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. That score marks the network’s highest-rated and most-viewed NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship since 2004, with year-to-year increases of 14%, 12% and 11% percent respectively. ESPN’s three-game Final Four coverage also marked the network’s most-viewed Final Four average since 2004, averaging a 2.6 rating, 2,600,000 households and 3,635,000 viewers. ESPN’s digital platforms, ESPN3 and WatchESPN, posted double-digit growth with a 16% bump in viewership on ESPN3 compared to 2011.
On Sunday, MLB on TBS returns for a fifth consecutive season on Sunday, with the Rays hosting the Yankees at 1:30p. Ernie Johnson calls the game with analyst John Smoltz. Overall, play-by-play commentators for the 2012 season will include Johnson, veteran TBS announcer Brian Anderson and long-time broadcaster Dick Stockton. They will be paired with a combination of returning TBS analysts Ron Darling, Dennis Eckersley, Smoltz and David Wells.
Saturday’s Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race on SPEED saw a 13% jump in households over year-ago numbers with a .34 score over the equivalent race in 2011. The race also scored a 77% increase among M35-54 (.46 vs. .26) and 64% climb among M18-49 (.23 vs. .14).
Vin Scully will be part of MLB Network’s Opening Day game tomorrow night, with the network featuring a simulcast of his call of the Los Angeles Dodgers at the San Diego Padres tomorrow at 7p. The game, which is the only scheduled prime time matchup on Opening Day, marks the return of the channel’s package of 30 Games, 30 Clubs, 30 Days to start the season. MLB Network’s simulcast, which is subject to local blackouts, will televise Prime Ticket’s feed of the game.
Dial Global reportedly announced that 20.6 million people tuned in to hear the radio broadcast of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. The games aired on 512 radio stations nationally with Dial Global commissioning the study via Edison Research.

New Dodgers owner Earvin “Magic” Johnson will hold a talkback with ticket holders following the performance of Broadway play Magic/Bird on Friday, April 13th. Imagine a sports fan tool designed to keep audiences away from their team’s information. Heineken is launching a new app, Keep it Legendary, that will offer a set of tools (accessed through the Heineken Facebook page) designed to block game spoilers for fans through the app’s Fever Keeper, including news, scores, goals scored by players, etc., until users are ready to access them later.
Olympic partner Procter & Gamble announced its sponsorship of 28 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The athletes will subsequently represent 13 P&G brands, including Tide, Crest, Duracell, Gillette, Pampers and others at the London 2012 Games. Overall, the company will sponsor more than 150 athletes around the world.
ESPNRadio.com announced that the site logged its best month ever in March since it first launched 11 years ago, with nearly 1.51 million page views from users listening between 30-60 minutes of digital audio through the ESPN Audio NOW Player. That marks an increase of more than six times (up 511%) over the same month last year. The site also generated more than 3.22 million unique visitors (up 11%) and nearly 27 million total page views (up 36%).
Bloomberg Sports is creating new sports applications for fantasy players — delivering both the “MLB Front Office” Draft Kit 2012 as well as the Front Office Trade Analyzer 2012 (live in April) for Windows Phone in time for the 2012 baseball season. The Draft Kit and Trade Analyzer will seek to allow users to quickly manage their draft lists, pin Live Tiles for individual player cards to the phone’s Start Screen, which offers a direct link to the player’s stats, projections, and news. Bloomberg Sports will also be developing a product for fantasy football for Windows Phone to be released in the early fall.
Online voting for the Madden NFL 13 cover athlete continues, with 16 million votes so far, already besting last year’s tally of 13 million votes. Voting continues through April 25 when the next Madden NFL 13 cover athlete will be announced on ESPN’s SportsNation at 5p.
