Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 4, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…
Nickelodeon just ordered 13 episodes of Instant Mom (working title) for its NickMom primetime programming block. The original scripted comedy stars Tia Mowry-Hardrict (Sister Sister) as a young party girl who “trades in Cosmos for carpools when she marries an older man,” according to Nick press. The show, set to premiere later this year and repeat on Nick at Nite, is the first NickMom original scripted comedy series.
Summertime Entertainment is venturing further down the yellow brick road. The studio is launching a prequel of sorts for its 3D animated film Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, due in 2014 with a virtual world of second screen content. Summertime is populating the new Legends of Oz World site (LegendsofOzWorld.com) with multiplayer games, 30 story quests and more than 1,000 collectibles for fans. Legends of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum’s great-grandson Roger Stanton Baum, picks up after The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. And there will be more Oz content to come from Summertime. The studio has rights to 10 of Roger Baum’s books and is “in the process of developing several gaming, film, and television projects with our production and finance partners,” said CEO Ryan Carroll. Legends of Oz World is co-developed by U.K.-based studio Dubit. The film stars Lea Michele (Dorothy), Martin Short (Jester), Jim Belushi (Lion), Dan Aykroyd (Scarecrow) and Kelsey Grammer (Tin Man).
Cartoon Network and Atlantis, Paradise Island are summering together for a third year in a row as the net brings a massive obstacle course, concert, nighttime beach screenings, gaming and more to the resort from June 17-Aug. 11. Cartoon is transforming Atlantis’ Paradise Lagoon into the Cartoon Network Lagoon and the Land of Ooo from it series Adventure Time, currently airing in its fifth season. The lagoon will feature an Aflex Technology-developed 9,000-square-foot obstacle course that features a 16-foot likeness of characters Finn and Jake, three 10-foot towers, a 12-foot long Beemo (Finn and Jake’s living video game console and friend) launch pad and a 60-foot long slide themed for character Lady Rainicorn. Cartoon is also taking over the AKA (Atlantis Kids Adventure) club with a life-size Adventure Time board game, screening never-before-seen shows, and staging costumed character parades.
It’s game on at The Hub. To pump its hit series Family Game Night, the net is holding a sweepstakes where fans have an opportunity to win a trip to Los Angeles to attend a live taping of the series and, pending eligibility, be a contestant with his or her family. The sweepstakes launches during a Family Game Night marathon from 7 p.m.-midnight Sunday (April 7). A secret code word will be presented during each hour of the marathon, which viewers can then enter on The Hub web site (hubworld.com/fgn) by end of day April 11 at 11:59 p.m. One lucky fan will win a trip for four to LA to see a live taping, a $1,000 in cash and the chance to be chosen from the audience to be a contestant with his or her family. Family Game Night, where contestants compete in larger-than-life versions of classic games like Battleship and Connect 4, returns for its fourth season this summer.
PROGRAMMING PICKS
Disney Channel has ordered a third season of Austin & Ally starring Ross Lynch, Laura Marano, Raini Rodriguez and Calum Worthy… In other network news, Jaime Pressly will guest star in a new episode of Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb this Friday. In the ep, “MindShare,” Phineas and Ferb swap bodies with alien tourists only to find they were duped and are now stranded on another planet. Oops…

GAMING
ZQGame’s The Lost Titans is adding new content and features when it enters its second phase of closed beta testing April 18. The free-to-play game sends players on a mythological journey through the world of Aristos to save their Titan Lord Hyperion and restore order to the land in the wake of Titan Ophion’s destruction, intertwining Egyptian, Greek and Roman mythologies along the way. ZQGame launched the initial beta phase in November 2012, and player feedback resulted in many new additions and improvements including additional Pets and Mounts, new tutorials and an expanded VIP level.
Bucking some of the current conventional wisdom, Ouya is thinking inside the box with its new Android-based games console. The sleek $99 Ouya console is set to debut June 4 in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. via Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, GAME, Target and its own OUYA.tv. The company said some 8,000 (yep, you read right) game developers worldwide are currently developing games, including Square Enix, Double Fine Productions and Tripwire Interactive and it promises hundreds of titles out for launch. Despite a drop in game console sales as app gaming takes off, the Ouya box will go head-to-head with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

Sprout scored its highest-rated Q1 ever (averaging 0.24 rating/128,000 homes), which also marked the sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year double-digit household growth. Co-viewing is on the rise, with more than 23% of its audience coming in the W18-49 demo, a rise of 36% from first quarter 2013. Additionally, the redesigned SproutOnline.com achieved its highest monthly unique traffic (895,000 unique visitors) since November 2011, up 12% from the 12-month average.
Cartoon Network made significant Q1 strides in the coveted tween market, as well as with boys in other key demos. During the quarter, it ranks as the top net for Early Prime (7-9 p.m.) delivery of boys 6-11 and 9-14, and No. 1 for Total Day delivery of boys 9-14. Cartoon Network was the top destination among all networks on Monday and Thursday nights (7-9p) with boys 2-11, 6-11 and 9-14, with original series Regular Show and Adventure Time pulling big audiences. All told, Cartoon programming accounted for half of the top 50 telecasts on basic cable with boys 6-11 and 9-14, and Saturday morning Action Block premieres of Beyblade: Metal Fury, Pokemon B&W: Rival Destinies, Ben 10 Omniverse and Star Wars: The Clone Wars ranked No. 1 in their respective time periods with boys 9-14.
