Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

While kids/teens across the US are headed for the freedom of summer vacation, MTV is addressing the nationwide issue of high school dropouts with a special.  The new documentary The Dropout Chronicles will premiere May 9, 2007 at 8:30p on MTV2, with a sneak peek slated for earlier that day on MTV at 2p.  The Dropout Chronicles follows the stories of three high school students, all facing various obstacles and all on the verge of walking away from school entirely, and the different choices they make.  Simultaneously, MTV along with Time, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Civic Enterprises and the National Governors Association will host the National Summit on America’s Silent Epidemic in Washington DC on May 9.

Tomorrow morning NBC’s Today show will launch Al’s Book Club For Kids, a summer-long program during which Al Roker hopes to keep kids reading skills sharp.  Al’s Book Club For Kids will invite K9-11 to read and discuss four books.  Roker will meet with a group of kids four times over the summer to discuss the book they are currently reading hosts the initiative.  Oh, the first book will be announced on-air tomorrow morning with the introduction of the club.

Elsewhere in the fight against the “summer slide,” Scholastic is hosting its Summer Reading Buzz campaign that aims to help get kids reading four or more books during their summer vacation.  Additionally, Scholastic’s reading effort also underlines how important parents, educators and librarians are in helping kids find books they might like and enjoy reading.  While I’m all for both efforts, I can tell you that to this day when the librarians from my school see me, they start kicking me out of wherever I am.  I wasn’t very good at being quiet in the library.

BabyUniverse, Inc. has entered into a content agreement to broadcast Real Savvy Moms content on BabyTV.com.  Under the deal BabyTV.com will feature 31 episodes of Real Savvy Moms, the weekly PBS series targeted to parents/caregivers and parents-to-be.

The second season of Hikayat Simsim, the local Jordanian adaptation of Sesame Street, will premiere on JTV on May 1, 2007.  In addition to underlining the underlining literacy and other early learning skills, Hikayat Simsim features messaging about the importance of girls’ education. The new season of the Arabic language series features two new Muppet duo, Tonton, an enthusiastic 4-year-old and Juljul, a patient and very neat 6-year old, along with Grandpa Sesame, a grandfather-like mentor.

Author Kelly Link has signed on with Viking Children’s Books to write a young adult collection of short stories, per Publishers Weekly.  Link’s anthology will be comprised of stories previously published in other collections and anthologies as well as a new story.  According to the report David Kirschner Productions has optioned the movie rights to two of the stories that are to be included in the new book; The Wizards of Perfil and The Faery Handbag.

It’s finally here! The Cyn opsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by Greek, A New ABC Family Original Series coming in July. MARKETING/LICENSING

Whyville, the tween/teen targeted online social network, has partnered with kajeet, the new tween-aimed pay-as-you-go mobile phone service, to offer its members the ability to use customizable chats functions through kajeet Chat Factory.  Additionally, kajeet is offering an online Friend Finder service that Whyville members can use to contact one another with a personal invitation to meet and hang out at a destination within Whyville.

Jakks Pacific has re-upped its long-term TV games licensing pact with Namco Bandai Games America.  Under this deal Jakks will continue to develop plug and play TV Games products based on Pac-Man and other Namco arcade video games.

GoCityKids, the online city guide for kid/family activities and services, expands with the addition of two new feature cities, Las Vegas and St. Louis, for a total of 22 cities.  This summer GoCityKids will introduce a new design a number of new features including allowing users to add their favorite local restaurants, events, stores etc, in all cities/ towns/rural areas across the country.  GoCityKids will run the Best of My City sweepstakes, April 27-May21, 2007.  Nickelodeon acquired GoCityKids last year.  ( http://www.gocitykids.com/ ).

Lots of theme park related news for you….

The web is abuzz and even The New York Times is reporting that Universal is in the midst of negotiations with J.K. Rowling create a Harry Potter theme park.  So far there has been no official word.  That said, the story goes that the Potter park would be built at Universal Studios Orlando’s Islands of Adventure theme park and could be up in running within 18 months.

Universal Studios has confirmed it will open The Simpsons ride at its Orlando and Hollywood theme parks in spring 2008.  The ride is part of the overall Simpsons attraction concept, which is a fantasy park as envisioned by Krusty the Clown.  The ride will take over the buildings that were previously home to the Back to the Future ride in each park.  I’m guessing there won’t be a Homer’s Beer Belly Slide, but I’d bet there’d park guests who’d wait in line in the middle of a hot day to nap on Homer’s couch, while the kids make their way through the labyrinth in Marge’s hair.

If you have been to Disney World you no doubt have your own strategies about how to beat the lines, eat decent food and avoid the dreaded transportation center.  The Zagat Survey has published its first Walt Disney World Insider’s Guide, which features information on six of Disney’s Orlando theme parks, including ratings, reviews and age recommendations for everything from rides to hotels and to nightlife and shopping.  My favorite thing in the guide has to be in the Attractions section where there is a list of Animatronics.  Like its other guides the new Zagat Disney World Insider Guide is based on consumer surveys, in this case 4,841 “avid Disney-goers.”  Sorry, you’ll now get sharing from me, well, maybe if you are really nice.

The Danger Rangers Safety Rules! Live Show begins its second season this weekend at Dutch Wonderland Family Amusement Park.  Co-produced by Educational Adventures and RWS & Associates Entertainment, the live 20-minute show is based on the Danger Ranger series that airs on public television.  Dutch Wonderland is located in Lancaster, PA.

Marc Grossman joins Taffy Entertainment as Director/Public Relations.  Grossmann is responsible for worldwide publicity, advertising and special events for Taffy Entertainment, in addition to similar responsibilities with other MoonScoop Group partners including Mike Young Productions, MoonScoop Productions, Kabillion, and Queen Bee.  He will report to Cynthia Money, President/Worldwide Consumer Products and Marketing.  Most recently Grossmann was a TV consultant, managing launch campaigns for The Tennis Channel and Anime Network and consumer campaigns for a range of TV, sports and entertainment organizations.  Previously, he was Sr. Press Manager, NBC and Director/Publicity, Hanna-Barbera Cartoons studio.
