Good morning, it’s Thursday, April 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
 
So much for the quadruple play. Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox pulled the plug on the Pivot mobile phone joint venture with Sprint. The companies have stopped marketing the service but will give current customers the option of keeping their phones and switching to a regular Sprint calling plan, without incurring one of those nasty termination fees.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Oxygen unveiled a new logo, a new tagline, Oxygen: Live Out Loud, and a new multiplatform branding initiative called Oxygen Everywhere designed to reach young, female trendsetters on whatever platform they choose to inhabit. Oxygen.com will undergo a makeover incorporating more content from its NBCU sister properties – including BravoTV.com and iVillage. The site will also launch a new video player to deliver outtakes, webisodes and extras. One such feature is called Oxygen’s Sixth Act where a single scene will be taken from Oxygen’s original series and made available only for digital and wireless. The network’s first ever WAP site is also in the works.
 
To promote its Friday night MovieLand slot, MTV Network’s TVLand.com launched a fun Movie Lover’s Database comprised of nearly 1,000 trailers spanning from the 50’s to the present. The handy interface allows users to browse for trailers by name, genre or decade.
 
Orange’s Spanish-language starMedia portal launched starMedia EntertaiNEWS, the first in a series of new broadband offerings planned by the ad-supported content service. The new channel, developed together with C3 Entertainment, recaps entertainment news and provides information about concerts, movies, theater and other cultural events of interest to Hispanics.
 
Call for content: The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is accepting submissions through May 30 for two interactive-themed Emmys – one for fictional programming (dramas, other scripted stuff) the other for non-fiction (comedy, reality, etc.) This year choices will be more content-based rather than technology-based, but multiple platform extensions will be considered for a single submission. Independently produced fare will be judged right along side studio stuff, so why not give it a shot? It cost $400 to submit for non-members, but established internet producers can join the academy for $150/year, then the submission fee is waived.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Popular podcasting network PodShow, co-founded by former MTV VJ Adam Curry, has officially relaunched as Mevio, adding new features including a tool that allows podcasters to program channels of content to send to other users.
 
HungryManTV, the home of shows such as Phistophicles, completed a new Flash-powered redesign, improving the interface and adding more social features.
 
IPTV start-up TidalTV added programming partnerships with NBC News and TV Guide Network.
 
Germany’s Bertelsmann is setting out to put a collection of popular Wikipedia entries to paper, reports The New York Times.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
FCC Chief Kevin Martin is not giving up on his examination of Comcast‘s web traffic managing practices, based on comments he made to the Senate Commerce Committee this week. He has stopped short of endorsing net neutrality legislation, however, which so far seems to fall along party lines with Democrats in favor and Republicans against.
 
Meanwhile Comcast filed for a restraining order against AT&T in Chicago complaining its U-Verse service is causing problems for its cable modem customers, reports Ars Technica. AT&T says it added 148,000 new U-verse customers this quarter, bringing its IPTV base to 379,000.
 
Recession–what recession? Apple‘s profit jumped 36% to $1.05 billion and revenues increased 43% on huge sales growth of Mac computers and the successful launch of the iPhones. Apple shipped 2.28 million Macs (up 51%), 10.6 million iPods (up 1%) and 1.7 million iPhones during the quarter. Apple also confirmed it acquired microprocessor designer P.A. Semi Inc., giving the company its first stake in the chip business.
 
Amazon‘s Q1 numbers also looked good, but maybe not quite as good as Apple’s. The company reported revenue of $4.13 billion, up 37% year-to-year. Amazon refused to break out earnings for its digital media businesses, but then what else is new.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
The U.S. Justice Dept. is already investigating possible antitrust implications of Yahoo‘s two-week trial outsourcing search to Google, reports Reuters.
 
Topps Candy will launch a educative social networking site in May called babybottelpop.com, allowing kids to learn about U.S. waterways and send virtual “messages in a bottle” to other Topps Baby Bottle Pop fans by uploading a secret code on marked packages. One message can be written and received for each unique UPC code uploaded to the site.
 
Local ad network Marchex added several new partner sites including Frommers, Priceline, Yelp and Restaurant.com.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Internet Broadcasting says it got a huge boost from its new partnership with CNN.com, posting record unique visitors (UV) during the first three months of 2008. UVs grew each month with 17.7 million uniques in January, 19.6 million in February and 17 million in March, compared to 13.8MM, 15.4MM, and 13.9MM during the first three months of 2007. IB attributes the gain to election coverage, weather franchises and ongoing distribution increases. The company says 36 of its partner station sites hit records as well in terms of unique visitors and/or page views during Q1.
 
Here are some interesting facts about broadband consumption attributed to IP network management firm Arbor Networks, courtesy of GigaOM. On fixed and mobile consumer-focused broadband networks:

  • 10 percent of subscribers consume 80% of bandwidth
  • 0.5% of subscribers consume about 40 percent of total bandwidth
  • 80% of subscribers use less than 10 % of bandwidth

This supports ISP’s argument that only a few heavy users are taxing the network for everyone. But it turns out peer-to-peer networks aren’t the real culprit. According to Arbor:

  • Only 20% of traffic is P2P applications
  • During peak-load times, 70% of subscribers use http, while 20% use P2P
  • Http still makes up the majority of the total traffic, of which 45% is conventional text & images
  • Streaming video and audio content from services like YouTube accounts for nearly 50% of the http traffic

 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

IFC upped Christine Lubrano to VP/Non-Fiction Programming to spearhead the development and production of IFC non-fiction series, documentary features and news for multiplatform use. In addition, Rachel Smith was promoted to VP/Fiction Programming, and will oversee IFC scripted series for multiplatform use.
 
Blain Cook, Lead Architect of micro blogging service Twitter, has left the company to pursue other interests. The company’s latest achievement came yesterday with the launch of a Japanese version of the service.
 
CG animator Image Metrics named Michael Starkenburg to the position of COO, overseeing operations in the United States and United Kingdom.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Betting nostalgia will attract users and ultimately dollars, a new digital storefront called GetBack.com launched in beta yesterday, organizing streaming radio and video content as it relates to iconic moments in history. Click on one of the thumbnails at the top of the page to be taken back to a moment in time such as 1982 when Kareem’s Lakers beat Dr. J’s Sixers and Pat Benatar & Loverboy topped the charts. Songs can be sampled before purchasing single tracks or full albums. Content suppliers include Universal Music and Warner Music, Getty Images, Netflix and Hulu.
 
Clarification: Sony’s digital Groundlings content is not ready to premiere this week. The company has yet to announce a start date.
