Another quarter, another iPhone record for Apple. The company benefited from the sales of 18.65 million iPhones around the globe during its FY second quarter (adding Verizon as a new partner in the U.S. in Feb.), boosting profits by 95% y/y to $6 billion or $6.40/share. Apple also sold 3.76 million Macs, (+28% y/y), 9.02 million iPods (-17% y/y) and 4.69 million iPads during the quarter.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Amazon
announced a new partnership with library digital content distributor OverDrive to establish a lending library for Kindle users later this year. The network will allow Kindle customers to borrow Kindle books from over 11,000 libraries in the United States. The news comes about a month after Amazon blocked access to Lendle, a start-up that enabled Kindle users to lend eBooks to one another through an online database, and follows upon HarperCollins’ imposed rule of limiting library eBook checkouts to 26 per book.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Facebook appears to making a concerted effort to improve its ties with the Obama administration, ramping up a modest lobbying operation and looking to hire former Obama press secretary Robert Gibbs to guide the company’s communications strategy, per the WSJ. An interview with the paper, conducted before President Obama traveled to FB headquarters to give his town hall meeting yesterday, revealed that the social network is considering playing by “China’s rules” to gain a foothold there, a move that could rankle members of Congress.
 
A day before the President’s visit, Facebook unveiled new security and privacy features to help give families more control and tracking capabilities. One is a new social reporting tool allowing people to notify a member of their community, in addition to Facebook, when they see something they don’t like. The site also introduced a two-step authentication process and expanded secure web browsing protocols.
 
UK gaming firm Two Way Media announced a new funding deal from Ingenious covering a slate of new games to be released by Two Way over the next two years. The games will focus on Two Way’s social gaming and connected TV projects.
 
LA-based geo-location service provider HipGeo has completed a $500k initial round of financing led by Morado Venture Partners, a seed-stage fund run by former Yahoo executives Ash Patel and Michael Marquez. The platform, which automatically creates a record of the places users go and how they get there, includes smartphone apps, a website and an API.

Video syndication platform 5 Min Media announced a new partnership with women-targeted video network Sugar to distribute original lifestyle, celebrity news and fashion content across 5 min’s network. A bulk of Sugar’s library of 2k videos will also reside on 5 Min. Media’s website.
 
The Reader’s Digest Association, Inc. (RDA) has acquired online vertical network Haven Home Media to increase its footprint in the Home & DIY video market. RDA will use the network to build upon its foothold in the Food & Entertaining space, where its brands include Allrecepies.com and Every Day With Rachael Ray.
 
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A who’s who of leading directors including James Cameron, Peter Jackson and Kathryn Bigelow signed an open letter from the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) opposing DirecTV‘s new studio-supplied Premium VOD service.
 
The loss of exclusivity of the iPhone hasn’t yet hurt AT&T‘s fortunes in the short term as the company reported a 39% jump in Q1 profit. The telco actually added 2 million wireless subscribers during the quarter – up from 1.9 million new customers Q1 2010 – helping to drive earnings of $3.41 billion, up from $2.45 billion a year earlier. However one trend was troubling – net additions of contract customers, the bread-and-butter of any carrier, fell by 88% to only 62,000 from a year ago.
 
Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment announced the acquisition of San Francisco-based mobile app start-up, BlueHaze, the first step in the building of XIX Digital – a resource that will focus on talent-to-fan interaction in the online and mobile space. BlueHaze operates a suite of mobile app platforms for the music and entertainment industries, with a client base including Interscope Records, Warner Music, Ticketmaster and Madison Square Garden.
 
UK-based telco Virgin Media is trialing a public Wi-Fi network in Kent that would give its subscribers access to TV services on the go, reports paidcontent. (Rival BSkyB acquired The Cloud, Europe’s largest public Wi-Fi network with 50,000 hotspots, this past Jan. to power a TV Everywhere service it calls “Sky Anywhere.”) Virgin Media added 20,200 Cable subscribers during Q1 to bring its total cable subscriber base to 4.82 million, up 1.2% year over year. Some 65,000 customers have already registered for Virgin Media’s next-generation TV platform developed with TiVo Inc.

Apple
‘s iPhone 5, due out sometime this fall, will look similar to the previous model but will sport a faster processor, possibly a bigger screen and a more robust 8 megapixel camera, according to a Reuters report.
 
Two LA-based technology firms, Sample Digital and Technicolor, have introduced applications that enable production and studio executives to view and comment on dailies from movie and TV shoots on their iPads, per the LA Times.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Jose Rios has been promoted to VP/Digital News Applications for FOX Television Stations (FTS), reporting to Jack Abernethy, CEO of FTS beginning June 1. Jose will coordinate all digital news applications for FTS, including mobile applications and will work with the stations to develop news talent and identify social media opportunities.
 
Former SVP of Digital Marketing for Playboy Enterprises Daniel Smith has been tapped by global deals site Kgbdeals to serve as Chief Marketing Officer. He will be based in the company’s New York office.
 
Sonia Figueroa Martinez, most recently Director, Digital Sales at BE Interactive/Earl G. Graves, LTD, has joined Mochila as Regional Sales Director, a new position.
 
Sean Bennington has been named Director of Distribution for Crown Media Networks, the newly designated umbrella division housing Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel under parent company Crown Media Holdings Inc. Sean is based in the company’s Studio City office and reports to Lisa Barroso, VP/Distribution.
 
ESPN
has hired Jay Jay Nesheim as Director, Communications, ESPN Films & Content Development. She will be responsible for all communications and press activities related to ESPN Content Development and Films initiatives including documentaries, theatrical releases, film festivals and the ESPY Awards, and will be based in ESPN’s New York office.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Stiff upper lip or not, the Royal Family is diving into the social media space head first for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. YouTube has set up an official channel to stream the royal wedding on April 29 from Clarence House and St James’s Palace, complete with Twitter feeds and a live blog – a first for the video sharing site, according to Reuters. An interactive “Wedding Book” will invite visitors to post video congratulations to the couple. (You can also send well wishes via Twitter using the hashtag #rw2011.) Photographs will be published via photo-sharing site Flickr, and announcements on the day itself will be published on the official wedding site. There’s even a Facebook page to turn to for the latest wedding related news and announcements.
