After stagnating in 2009, online ad revenues continued to head North last year with display ads on social networks and online video spots showing the fastest growth, according to a full-year report released by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers. 2010’s rebound saw $26 billion spent, with Search (46%) continuing to lead the way, followed by banner/display ads (24%), Classifieds (10%) and Rich Media (6%). Online advertising continues to remain concentrated with the ten leading ad-selling companies, which accounted for 72% of total revenues in the Q4 2010. Search and display ads delivered through tablets and smartphones, measured for the first time by the IAB and PwC, totaled between $550 million and $650 million.


ESPN declared its local website initiative a success after completing launches in Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York. The sites reached an average of 8.7 million uniques collectively for the past 6 months through March, with its 5 local mobile apps collectively generating more than 1.4 million average monthly visits. has grown the most quickly out of all five local sites, according to ComScore, with daily unique visitors in March up 68% and total minutes up 71% compared to the same month last year.
Lonny co-founders Michelle Adams and Patrick Cline have completed their design of a digital edition of Meredith Corp.’s Traditional Home magazine, which will post two issues a year. The 347-page May edition of Trad Home is already up online.
Toei Animation signed a deal with Hulu to make English-subtitled episodes of anime series “Toriko” available on the site beginning today, four days after they air on Japanese television.
The New York Rangers unveiled the launch of a new online community and social media site, – the first-of-its-kind site for an NHL team. The site features video highlights, player interviews, blogs and fan commentary.


introduced a backpack HD video system at NAB, equipped with 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi upload capabilities for live on-site streaming and web reporting.


Google is now cleared for takeoff to develop a new travel vertical. The company officially closed on its $700 million acquisition of ITA Software, just four days after the deal was approved by the Justice Dept. (with strings attached.)


Netflix, which is monitored by Nielsen‘s video tracking service, continues to grow rapidly, ranking 6th in total streams and easily lead in the time per viewer category in March. For the second month in a row, VEVO was the #2 video brand in the U.S. with 33.3 million unique video viewers, trailing only YouTube with over 111 million unique video viewers. CNN Digital was new to the top 10 after a phenomenal 128% month-to-month boost in total streams as online viewers turned to the site to stream video covering the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. VEVO (+21%), Yahoo (+21%) and MTV Networks Music (+25%) also posted heady gains in March.

is offering an unlimited 4G data plan that reigns in heavy users but at least doesn’t shut them off. The new “Even More” plan, priced at $80/month with a two-year contract, will offer unlimited data usage and unlimited nationwide calling but will ramp down speeds after 2GB have been used each month.
‘s slow-growing Windows Phone 7 platform received a boost in the arm yesterday with some news shared at the annual MIX developers conference. A planned “Mango” update slated for release this fall will enable multitasking for background processing, audio and file transfer, and fast application switching. Some of the mobile world’s top apps including Skype, Spotify, and Angry Birds will be added for the platform within the next few months. Microsoft also introduced a new version of its Silverlight video platform, offering a 3D interface for delivering 3D visualizations within applications.
Spanish language broadcaster Univision has launched a free iOS app offering a smattering of news, video clips, sports coverage and celebrity gossip. Social features include the ability to form social channels to share content via email, SMS, Twitter and Facebook.
NBCU’s ExerciseTV launched a free SmartTV app on Samsung’s web-connected content platform, featuring exercise videos across 6 categories ranging from mini workouts to full-length sessions.


Court Stroud has joined Castalia Communications as SVP/New Business. He will be based in New York and report to President Luis Torres-Bohl.


Financial news may not be the sexiest media genre but it’s made vastly more accessible by video. (Jim Cramer is nothing if not entertaining.) continues its ongoing commitment to online video by launching a new player with improved sharing and search functionality. Archived video is great on the web but it is of little worth if it’s not easily searchable. A huge metadata push by CNBC now enables “real-time” transcripts of programs to be searched so that users can jump to the relevant part of the video their looking for. The player also enables selected portions of videos to be embedded or shared via email or social networking sites – the sender can choose the start and stop point of the clip. Video offerings helped CNBC experience its best month ever in March, attracting 7.8 million uniques (+83% y/y).
