Cynopsis
4/12/07
Good morning, it’s Thursday, April 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Late yesterday, NBC News pulled the plug on Don Imus saying it will no longer air the simulcast of Imus in the Morning radio show from MSNBC effective immediately. Originally, both NBC News and CBS Radio said they would suspend Don Imus and his radio show for two weeks effective April 16, following a racial comment he made last week about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team. In its place, MSNBC will air regular news programming from 530-10a. NBC News also apologized again to the Rutgers women’s basketball team yesterday in a prepared statement saying “we deeply regret the pain this incident has caused”. Several of you chimed in to Cynopsis yesterday with new Emails to the Editors, which you’ll find at the base of this edition. The section has a handful of representative comments providing different viewpoints and opinions.

IN RE: DON IMUS / RUTGERS / SUSPENSION
- 4/12/07:
- Mr. Cole didn’t have to sign his letter to the editor “… and a Republican”. That was pretty obvious. Imus’ comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team was racist AND sexist. And yes, he has the right to say anything he wants – Free Speech. He also has the right to suffer the consequences. Now he can shut up for 2 weeks.

–Elena Olivares
- This is in response to another email to the editor regarding the Imus situation. It really bugs me when people bring up ‘Free Speech’ in situations like this. Don Imus is not in danger of being arrested by the government for what he said. Many employees get fired or punished for non-illegal acts. No one has endangered the constitution in their reactions to Don Imus’ racist and sexist remark. Billion Dollar brands ($10 brands too for that matter) have the right to choose how their brand is represented publicly. It’s not a constitutional issue.
- People judge edgy humor by using some sort of reference or by the context in which it was delivered. If “Nappy Headed Hoes” had a direct relevant reference, then it could be possibly excusable. No reference has been offered by Imus. The only reference, therefore, is that he saw a basketball court full of African American women and called them “Nappy Headed Hoes.” I may not be plugged into African American culture as deeply as Don Imus, but I don’t think “Nappy Headed Hoes” is a popular catch phrase in any community unless you want to get beat down. Not to mention, if you’re going to use edgy racial humor, at least make it funny. It wasn’t even close to being funny. If you called up TBS, their operator would tell you that it wasn’t funny.

- I just wanted to show my support to Calvin.
- I consider myself a normal democrat, and i believe that everyone should be treated the same, but I also agree with Calvin in that we are also getting to the point that some things are going to far. I really believe that the Rutgers team (per the interview I saw this morning on the Today Show), got upset to a certain extent at the comments, but would have been adults about it had the media and Al Sharpton not gotten involved. They would have said, like the rest of the straight thinking public that Imus is an idiot and not worth our time – just like the majority of us do with people like Howard Stern or Chris Rock and all his comments. He has the right to say it, but it doesn’t mean we have to agree. I mean lets be serious, with all the issues and problems going on over in Iraq, the two major news stories yesterday were this and that Larry Berkhead is Anna Nichole Smiths’ baby’s daddy.
- Can we please go back to the world when we didn’t have 24 hour news coverage!?! Please!
-

- In response to Calvin Cole (a Christian and a Republican)’s comments, I don’t think Mr. Cole realizes that freedom of speech does not mean you should not have to deal with the consequences of your ill thought of words. Would there be an uproar if he called “a tough-looking group of white women basketball players from the rural Midwest “trailer trash tramps”?”? Your probably right in respect that there probably wouldn’t be, but should there be? The answer is yes!
- Maybe that is more the point, that just because there is freedom of speech doesn’t mean you can just say any callous thing you want and feel no repercussion hiding behind freedom of speech.
- … Walk up to any women on the street and call them a “ho” I’m sure freedom of speech will not help you no matter what race, color or creed the woman you are talking to is. Then you have to think about who Imus was referring to. A group of young women playing in a national championship game for a major university. Why would he talk about these accomplished women like that, because they are not attractive to him? Why would he call them “ho’s”? He does not know their sexual history or their academic accomplishments! To tell you the truth I don’t think he even knew any of their names at the time of that broadcast.
- Last but not least why would he call them “nappy headed”? Do you really think he was just referring to their hairstyles and not there race, because unfortunately nappy is associated with African American hair. So I don’t think it is a “bit coloring” to call what he said a racial slur, just because he didn’t say the N word doesn’t mean race has nothing to do with the slur that came out of his mouth!
-
–Kenneth Irby ( an African-American, a Christian and a Democrat)
- I agree with the writer and I am a Jewish Democrat but first an American.
- Context is everything and the utter hypocrisy about this issue is (in a word) stunning.
- I have been listening to Imus since he started on WNBC December 2, 1971. Do I always agree with him, no but that’s America.
- Humor is not always funny nor is it politically correct. Imus has said he knows better which is, I guess, the reason for this mud slide.
- I sincerely hope that the loudest critics of the punishment Mr. Imus will have don’t say or do anything they will ever seek forgiveness for.

- It’s unfortunate that you would re-post something that is obviously ignorant and disrespectful such as the reply in your newsletter. Reprinting ignorant words (albeit with stars in between) only makes people feel their use is more acceptable when it is completely unacceptable. Free speech is a right in our country, but free speech is only free when it’s not Libeling or Defaming someone else’s character. As a former US serviceman, I also know that free speech is far from free; there is definitely a price paid for it every day.
- Imus’ comments were ignorant; not a single girl on that basketball team fits the words he used to describe them (and in no way could he determine this by watching them play basketball on television). The fact that he would make up excuses for using language like that speaks to nature of his character even more. I am sure the advertisers will ultimately decide whether he has any future or not.
- You have my permission to reprint my words, and I hope that you do. It is unfortunate that people can misconstrue ill-conceived and attacking remarks with free speech.

–Oliver Harper
- Just so Calvin Cole and your other readers are informed. The term “nappy” is a racial term. It comes from the word “naps” which would describe the tightly bundled hair of African Americans. Over the years this became “nappy” and was synonymous with bad hair. For more reading please see the book Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America. This will better explain why this term is so offensive to other people.

- 4/11/07:
- Cynthia…isn’t racial slur a bit coloring of his comments? No, what he said wasn’t very thoughtful, but nappy is not necessarily a racial term – it’s an adjective. Imus makes comments about everybody and always has. He makes fun of Christians, Jews, all kinds of other religions, people and races and he always has.
- The only crime here is that Imus is suspended for using FREE SPEECH. I’m surprised at your coloring of the issue by putting the emphasis on the racial slur. If he had called them ni**er hoes, that would be one thing. (Editor’s note: the original word here was altered so not to set off your spam alarms.)
- Just ask yourself this question: would we be having this news story if he had called a tough-looking group of white women basketball players from the rural midwest “trailer trash tramps”?
- I don’t think so. We’d go “oooh” and then forget about it.
- It’s America. It’s not Rev. Sharpton’s Republic. It’s time people stopped listening to this fear-imposing radical and remember our own freedoms.
- I just think we need to stop this ridiculous fear that is being imposed on anyone. If anyone speaks out and it offends a certain group, it seems that they are punished by the media, not the law, because it’s not illegal.
- But they are penalized as if it were illegal. Imus was suspended for two weeks, but curiously not right away – just when it was convenient for his bosses. So, is it really an issue or just placating a loud constituency?
- Calvin Cole (a Christian and a Republican)
