Good morning, it’s Monday, January 17, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The launch of the much-anticipated digital newspaper designed by News Corp. to be distributed via Apple‘s iPad has been delayed for a number of weeks, according to an AP report. Dubbed The Daily and edited by Abigail Jones, the social networking-infused publication will reportedly charge $1/ week to subscribers, who will be encouraged to interact with its stories via Facebook, Twitter and other popular platforms. Meanwhile, Apple continues to push back the launch of an iPad subscription service for paid app publications and has contacted European publishers to disclose new rules for the service, according to an article in the Flemish newspaper De Volkskrant sourced by CNET. The rules would prohibit publishers from offering free digital editions to subscribers who already pay for a print subscription.
NBCU’s financial site CBNC.com claimed its best month ever in Dec. in terms of unique audience with 6.3 million unique visitors, citing ComScore – up 54% from Dec. 2009. CNBC’s Mobile division also claimed record months and years, cumulatively crossed the 1 billion-page views mark across its mobile web, iPhone and Android app products.

Shares of Bellevue, WA-based Coinstar, parent of DVD Kiosk brand Redbox, plummeted on Friday after an announcement that its preliminary Q4 profit would be lower than expected. The company blamed the shortfall on its new delayed-access contracts with Hollywood studios; Redbox has to wait 30 days past the initial release date for new releases.
The CEO of Goldman Sachs visited the Chicago headquarters of couponing start-up Groupon to pitch the company on handling its IPO, per Bloomberg. Goldman Sachs participated in a financing round last week in a bid to also win the IPO, reportedly valuing the company at $15 billion.
Season 2 of FunnyorDie.com‘s online video sketch show Funny Or Die Presents premiered on HBO on Friday at midnight.
From Pacific Rock Productions comes the new 11-part web series Stacks, written and produced by Kathy J. Forti and based on a TV pilot script that won a Slamdance Teleplay Award. The thriller was shot between the stacks of the Beverly Hills Library and plays out across the 6th dimensional “Library of Truth,” controlled by a secret society called Minerva. One new episode will premiere each week on YouTube and stacksTV.com.
Online video producer Clevver Media struck a deal with ad network Alloy Media + Marketing to handle ad sales and promotions across the company’s teen entertainment properties including its popular YouTube channel ClevverTV.
Wi-Fi solutions provider Boingo Wireless filed an IPO application with the SEC, naming Credit Suisse Securities and Deutsche Bank Securities as co-managers.
The National Coalition of African American Owned Media (NCAAOM), which has come out in opposition against the Comcast/NBCU merger, leveled criticism at the FCC, calling the commission “incompetent and unfair” for not filing its triennial report on eliminating market entry barriers to small businesses before vetting the merger proposal.
Yahoo’s share of the search market declined in Dec. after the company’s search technology was integrated with Microsoft, according to ComScore, down .4 percentage points to 16%. Microsoft’s Bing service continues to climb, up from 11.5% in Oct. to 12% in Dec., while Google continues to dominate the search market with a 66.6% share in Dec.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360, equipped with the new motion controller Kinect, was the clear winner among gaming platforms over the holidays, according to new NPD Group figures. The company has shipped 8 million Kinect units so far and sold 1.86 million Xbox 360 consoles in Dec. alone. The overall U.S. market for physical games (new & used), downloads, social networking games and mobile game apps totaled an estimated $15.4-$15.6 billion in 2010, flat or slightly down from 2009.
You’re never too young to get addicted to digital gadgets. Toddler-targeted video producers BabyFirst Mobile has launched a $3.99 video-streaming app for the iPad featuring content created by educational and developmental experts. The app is available in seven languages: American and British English, Latin American and Castilian Spanish, French, Portuguese and Mandarin.
Meredith Corporation named Rick Straface as Associate Publisher of Special Interest Media and Home Solutions for the Meredith National Media Group. He will be responsible for overseeing multiplatform ad sales and marketing for Meredith’s Special Interest Media publications as well as its Home Solutions ad sales efforts. Rick will report to Stephen Levinson, VP, Group Publisher, Meredith National Media Group.
Despite concerns of jeopardizing the golden goose of (industry highest) cable subscription fees, a pleasant surprise in Disney’s digital empire has proved to be ESPN.com and its family of properties, superserving sports fans when they don’t have time to plant themselves on the couch. The site finished the year with a flourish, according to ComScore tracking, claiming a 29% share of the sports category in Dec. and setting records for total minutes (up 38%) and unique audience (43 million.) ESPN says monthly uniques and total viewing on its live sports broadband video site ESPN3.com were also up 150% and 180% respectively this year over 2009, as the site was picked up by additional ISPs and became available on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform (with built-in Kinect controller support.) It will be interesting to watch how ESPN continues to balance the desire to expand its audience on digital platforms with the need to protect its cash cow, as live sports is often cited by cable subscribers as the content genre that prevents them from “cutting the cord.” Fantasy-themed content has proved to be a sweet spot that is complementary to the core games; look for non-sports networks to apply similar models this year to build communities around their shows.
