12/06/07

Good Morning.  It’s Thursday, December 6, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

As negotiations are scheduled to resume this morning at 10am PT between the WGA and AMPTP, here are yesterday’s somewhat encouraging statements provided by both sides of the writers strike.  A hot topic at the moment according to various reports is reality TV – the WGA wants networks to only deal with reality TV producers who are WGA signatories, which gives their writers union benefits. The other topic on the table at the moment is online compensation.

First the WGA‘s statement:

“The Writers Guilds met today with the AMPTP and discussed issues of jurisdiction for original content for the Internet, Reality TV, Animation, and Basic Cable.  The talks also were focused on contract enforcement.  For the last two days, we have had substantive discussions of the issues important to writers, the first time this has occurred in this negotiation.  However, we are still waiting for the AMPTP to respond to all of our proposals, including Internet streaming of theatrical and television product and digital downloads.  Bargaining resumes tomorrow at 10a.”

And AMPTP‘s statement from yesterday:

“Negotiations with the WGA continued throughout the day and at the request of the Guild no joint sessions occurred during the evening. We will resume tomorrow. We remain committed to making a fair and reasonable deal. We believe that there is common ground to be found between the two sides that will put all of us in the entertainment industry in a better position to survive and prosper in what is a rapidly changing modern, global marketplace.”

Tonight’s Finale:
Bravo: Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style at 10p

TV Guide Network added Lawrence Zarian “The Fashion Guy” to co-host The Fashion Team, the weekly one-hour talk series that airs Sundays at 7p. Lawrence joins comedian Daphne Brogdon where they will dish on the latest styles, Red Carpet fashions along with a rotating celebrity guest list. Lawrence replaces former host, David Evangelista.

Sci Fi Channel has ordered up a new reality project called Run for Money, based on a Japanese format from Fuji Television, reports THR.  Basically, the contestants are fulfilling challenges in a variety of locations, all the while being “hunted”.  The contestants earn dollars for every second they remain “alive”, and as you might imagine, and the game winds on, the playing field shrinks and the number of hunters are increased. The project is from Mess Media for Buena Vista Prods adn Fujisankei Communications International.

Farmers Almanac TV, the national public television show inspired by the nearly 200-year old Farmer’s Almanac brand, chose urban gardening expert, Patti Moreno to host the half-hour magazine-style series. Patti’s hosting duties start next April when the show begins its third season. Currently, the show airs on 90% of the nation’s public television stations.
