Good morning. It’s Monday, September 30, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A steady home on CBS Sports Network, a new broadcast deal with RFD-TV, new sponsors and 20 years of history have the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. riding high heading into the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals next month. This year marks the 20th anniversary of competition for PBR, which has expanded competition into five countries with worldwide television distribution that reaches more than 100 million viewers annually.
Cynopsis Sports spoke with PBR co-founder and nine-time World Champion Ty Murray about the growth of the sport, the organization’s recent commitment to participate in RFD-TV’s The American Rodeo and how PBR is perceived by sports fans.
Murray on PBR’s media broadcasts: I can’t begin to tell you about how happy I am with the coverage we are receiving on TV. I feel like David Berson and CBS have done a tremendous job in the way the sport is presented to the fans. In a lot of ways, it is up to par with any sporting event there is. I feel like the telecast has really grown, and there are a lot educational ways for our fans to start to understand the sport more and what it takes to do this sport. As a result, we are playing to packed houses, sponsors are recognizing the loyalty of our fans and we are on a path that continues to point up.
On lessons learned from his reality series Ty Murray’s Celebrity Bull Riding: If you are one of those guys at home watching on TV, you should be able to connect with one of those guys on my show. It might have been the fighter; it might have been the actor or the football player. Hopefully everybody in American would have thought ‘I would have been like that guy’ and they could see what the experience was like. The football player we had was Rocket Ishmael, and he’s an amazing athlete. But that sowed that being an amazing athlete isn’t the only thing bull riding requires. Other people brought nerves of steel or toughness and they shows that that wasn’t enough. I thought it was a very interesting experiment, and that’s what it was, an experiment. There was no way to know what the outcome would be. In actually, I thought I could get the guys farther along than I did.
On rodeo versus other sports: The thing about this sport is that while it is hard to do athletically and it takes a tremendous toll physically, it is difficult mentally as well. That is because while all sports have the pressure of winning of losing, we have the pressure of living and dying as well. On top of it, that takes a special athlete who can do through all of that, and be fluid in those sorts of moments. That’s a real test. I did gymnastics all through high school. It is a very tough sport and requires a ton of athleticism and it is even scary at times when you are learning it. But when you’ve mastered a certain trick, it doesn’t change. So for me, once you hit that level, the self-pressure went away to a degree. With bull riding, it doesn’t go away, it doesn’t matter how much money you are riding for or where you are riding, the bulls don’t know and don’t care.
On the creation of the American Rodeo: It’s Randy Bernard’s brainchild and he was our CEO for the first fifteen years of our existence. He’s a guy we hired out of California when none of us knew what we were doing, but he had something that we passionately believed in. Randy’s a guy who is as good of a businessman as anyone and has a ton of integrity. I have a ton of respect for him. He started conversing with me about it in the early stages and as it escalated we continued to kick ideas around and I think it is a very exciting concept for a lot of different reasons. When you look at what has the potential to do and the guys it has the potential to lure back and the shining stars that it is able to unearth, that’s cool. To me, it moves the sport of rodeo into the 21st century. AT&T Stadium alone is amazing and there is no other place like it.
TBS landed the American League tiebreaker, which will feature the Tampa Bay Rays visiting the Texas Rangers tonight at 8p to determine which club will face the Cleveland Indians in the American League Wild Card Game presented by Budweiser on Wednesday at 8p on TBS. Brian Anderson will call the game alongside analysts Joe Simpson and John Smoltz and reporter David Aldridge.
More playoff games on the way? The NFL is reportedly mulling a swap of one preseason game for more playoff games. ESPN writes that a new scheduling formula is in the mix that would include a three-game preseason while expanding the postseason field from 12 to 14 teams, which would offset the lost revenue from the preseason game. The changes could take place as early as 2014 if league owners approve the changes.
Fast Nationals for the 49ers win over the Rams on Thursday Night Football nabbed a 4.9 household rating and 7.6 million viewers, not counting over-the-air broadcasts in San Francisco and St. Louis, according to Nielsen. Through three games TNF is averaging a 5.4 US HH rating and 8.6 million viewers on pace to be the highest-rated and most-watched TNF season ever.
CBS Sports made its pick for the channel’s SEC on CBS football game for Saturday, Oct. 5, adding Georgia/Tennessee to the schedule. The broadcast begins at 3:30 Verne Lundquist, analyst Gary Danielson and reporter Tracy Wolfson calling the contest from Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. Meanwhile, in early Nielsen tallies, Saturday’s shootout between Georgia and LSU delivered a 4.9 rating in overnight numbers, up 75% over last year’s game.
The AP writes that ESPN’s longtime racing announcer Marty Reid is no longer with the network. Reid had been part of the company’s team since 1982 and is the only television play-by-play announcer to cover five different North American motorsports series. He’s called NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Truck Series, as well as IndyCar and NHRA. An ESPN spokesman told the outlet that the network is going in a different direction and Allen Bestwick will call the remainder of the Nationwide Series races this season.
IMG Media locked in a three year agreement to globally represent and distribute all media rights for MMA outfit World Series of Fighting. Plans are now in place to expand the number of WSOF events to 8-10 for 2014/15 and for the shows to be staged internationally in venues such as Vancouver, Brazil, the UK, and Eastern Europe. NBC has a multi-year deal for exclusive coverage in the US.
After controversially showing an episode of Under Wild Skies that showed host Tony Makris shooting an elephant (and prompting a statement from Makris that compared his critics to Hitler), NBCSN has reportedly pulled the plug on the show, according to Sportsgrid, stating “Under Wild Skies will no longer air on NBC Sports Sports Network due to the program’s close association with its host, whose recent comments comparing his critics to Hitler are outrageous and unacceptable. NBCSN will continue to air all of our other quality outdoor programming.”
Grabbing headlines in recent weeks for scoring a 0.0 rating for Astros games, CSN Houston-jointly owned by Comcast, the Astros and the Rockets-has now reportedly filed for bankruptcy, according to the Wall Street Journal. In a statement issued Friday evening, CSN Houston said, “In order to resolve structural issues affecting CSN Houston’s partnership, affiliates of Comcast/NBCUniversal have filed for involuntary bankruptcy protection in the Southern District of Texas. This action is necessary to preserve CSN Houston’s ability to provide its valuable programming and reaffirms Comcast/NBCUniversal’s commitment to serving the region and its fans.”

INDYCAR and IZOD are parting ways, with the series’ title sponsorship ending after the current season. IZOD signed on in 2008 as its official apparel provider and became the entitlement holder in 2010. “As we and our retail partners shift the IZOD brand’s product focus, we need to shift our marketing spend to compliment it,” said Mike Kelly, Executive Vice President, The PVH Marketing Group.
After making headlines for his Chase-altering spinout three weeks ago, Clint Bowyer will see his primary sponsor return. 5-Hour Energy confirmed the company’s return to Michael Waltrip Racing. 5-Hour Energy President Scott Henderson had previously stated that the team’s actions and penalties made him unsure about continuing the sponsorship.
