Nielsen will include television viewership ratings on mobile devices in its fall 2014 TV ratings system. The New York Times says the move is the result of pressure from television networks hungry for the data. The new ratings will only account for videos viewed on network sites and affiliates, and not an ad-free streaming service like Netflix.
Vimeo is taking YouTube’s lead by launching an offline video viewing mode. The offline capability comes with the app’s update for iOS 7 along with other new features like the ability for Vimeo users to upload videos from mobile devices to the site and video thumbnails that begin playing when a user scrolls through the display.
Independent video distribution company The Orchard and CraveOnlineMedia of horror movie site www.ShockTillYouDrop.com launched a Shock Till You Drop YouTube Channel. The channel will feature three original series; including a roundtable discussion show about the TV hit American Horror Story. The Orchard’s multi channel network is ranked number five in the world for online channels, according to a ComScore study.
Many were tweeting “R.I.P. BlackBerry” on Friday when it announced the lay off 4,500 employees and the plan to reduce operation spending in half by 2015. All Things D explains the massive cut is the result of a deficit in second quarter earnings. BlackBerry apparently expects $1.6 billion instead of the projected $3.04 after selling 3.7 million smartphones, which is half the amount sold in the previous quarter.
Sony expects to sell five million PlayStation 4 consoles by next March, according to Sony Game Division Chief Andrew House. Variety reported the sale projections are ambitious based on how the PS3 took a year to reach that milestone in 2006. Sony also announced the PS4 will have voice and gesture control features, which is much like its Xbox competition. The PS4 will hit shelves on Nov. 15.

Google still scores a the top of online video views, but AOL is gaining steam according to the latest ComScore report. With the giant YouTube primarily feeding Google, it raked in 167 million viewers in August, while AOL’s push for original content paid off with 71 million video viewers. Facebook took third with 62 million viewers, followed by News Distribution Network at 50 million and VEVO at 49 million. The study also overall measured 188 million Americans watching a total of 46.7 billion online videos.
Apple’s retail and online stores were more than busy on Friday’s release of the iPhone 5s and 5c. According to Mashable, the line at the New York City store to purchase the new smartphones had 1,417 people at 8 a.m., or 58 percent longer than the line at the iPhone 5 launch a year ago. Apparently, the biggest sellers were the newest gold and silver iPhone 5s phone colors only available for purchase in-store. The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple already asked suppliers to produce more gold models to meet the demand, and will be selling that color online in October.

Fox started a Super Bowl pregame ad contest on Friday called the Social Bowl. The contest’s prize is a 30-second spot to be broadcast during the Super Bowl pregame, a spot worth $850,000. Marketers and advertisers can enter the contest on YouTube or the Fox Sports site, and football and ad fans can vote on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter for the best ad.

Jason Prohaska has been appointed the new CEO of digital marketing agency Your Majesty. Prohaska previously worked for digital marketing company Big Spaceship for nine years.
Global digital brand Zodiak Active of Zodiak Media announced the takeover of Nicola Drago as its new CEO when Marco Ferrari steps down in January 2014. Drago was previously the Senior Vice President of Strategy and New Business for Zodiak Active.
Facebook’s Vice President of Engineering and Products Greg Badros is leaving the company. He spent four years at the company and worked directly under CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Comedian Louis C.K. has quite a bias against smartphones, at least that’s what he recently expressed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Louis explained to O’Brien why he doesn’t allow his children to own a smartphone, because he finds the culture of the technology to have made kids less empathetic and without the ability to be content on their own.
