Cynopsis: Kids!

9/10/07

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 10, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Were you watching the MTV Video Music Awards last night?  If you were watching you likely caught actor Shia LaBeouf revealing the new Indiana Jones movie, in which he stars, is titled Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  A Lucasfilm Ltd. picture, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is directed by Steven Spielberg and distributed by Paramount and is scheduled for a simultaneous worldwide release on Thursday, May 22, 2008.  All in all, the LaBeouf’s announcement was a highlight of the broadcast.

Following in the footsteps, or whatever it is the robots make, plans are really under way to bring Robotech, the Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions’ 1980s animated series, to the big screen.  Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Robotech and Tobey “Spider-Man” Maquire will produce the picture through his Maguire Entertainment production company, per the Hollywood Reporter.  Maguire may indeed star in the picture, but that remains to be seen.  Craig Zahler will write the screenplay.  Also producing the movie is Drew Crevello under his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Productions banner.

The UK’s BBC Radio 1 has named Kelly Osbourne (aka daughter of Ozzie and Sharon) to host its new teen-targeted show, Radio 1’s Surgery, which in turn will be part of the new Sunday night teen zone (7p-12a).  The move comes as Radio 1 gets a full overhaul to aim focus its programming on a younger audience, including the under 18 crowd.  Launching mid October, Radio 1 Surgery (10p-12a) will focus on teen-related issues including relationships, health and education.  The earlier part of the Sunday evening teen zone will be hosted by popular disc jockey Annie Mac (7-10p), during which she’ll cover all things teen-related and play music.

Transformers is set for release as a DVD and HD DVD two-disc special edition set, as well as a single disc release, this October 16, 2007, from DreamWorks and Paramount and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment. The two-disc extras include commentary on the movie by director Michael Bay, two documentaries about the actors and robots, lots of behind the scenes stuff including early sketches, with the HD DVD version sporting web-enabled features.  Additionally, each DVD will include information about a Transformers Chevy sweepstakes as well as a promotion with Hostess.  If October is too long to wait, remember Transformers opens in Imax theaters this September 21.  Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, in association with Hasbro, the live-action movie has earned $650+ million worldwide ($311+ million US) in box office receipts since its initial theatrical release earlier this summer.

Mad Catz Interactive has acquired Joytech, a manufacturer/distributor of third-party video games and accessories, from Take-Two Interactive Software for about $3.7 million.  Mad Catz believes that Joytech will increase its annual revenue by at least $10 million, and add new customers and products.  As for Take-Two, the sale of Joytech follows its recently announced plans to focus efforts on its core publishing business.  The deal, according to Take-Two’s CEO Ben Feder, “will allow substantially all of our Joytech employees in the US and UK to join Mad Catz.”

MARKETING/LICENSING

Sesame Workshop and K’NEX have inked a new licensing partnership to produce Sesame Street-themed educational building sets for toddlers (kids 2-years and up).  According to the deal, K’NEX Brands serves at the licensee for interlocking construction building sets in North America and internationally.  The new line of toys is slated to be available from June 2008.

WizKids Inc. has released DC HeroClix: Justice League.  The line includes 60 individual Justice League characters, available in booster packs ($9.99) with each containing five figures and character cards and a game play card.  For those totally into the game and/or Justice League, by purchasing the Buy it by the Brick (includes 12 booster packs) will get an exclusive DC HeroClix Phantom Stranger (free).  WizKids is a unit of the Topps Company.

Play Visions, a toy/novelty company, has entered into a licensing deal with PAWS, Inc. to produce a line of Garfield branded pet toys.  Under the pact, the licensed properties will include Garfield, for cat products, and Odie, for dog related items.  Expect to see the Garfield pet toys in 2008.

STONE SOUP

Acclaimed kid’s book author Madeleine L’Engle passed away from natural causes on Thursday night, September 6, 2007 in Connecticut, according to a New York Times report.  She was 88.  L’Engle is probably best known for her book A Wrinkle In Time (1962/Farrar, Straus & Giroux), which went on to win a Newbery Medal the following year, and its sequels A Wind in the Door (1973), A Swiftly Tilting Planet (1978), and Many Waters (1986).  Now in its 69th printing, A Wrinkle In Time regularly shows up on the lists of the most challenged books and banned books.  A New Yorker, L’Engle taught children for many years in NYC’s Morningside Heights neighborhood, and also served as librarian and a writer in residence at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.  L’Engle also wrote poetry, plays, books about prayer and an autobiography.

Housekeeping Note — this is important.  We are changing servers again.  I know, it’s a pain in the neck because whenever we do this some of you suddenly have trouble receiving Cynopsis.  (For the majority of you who never have any trouble, you don’t have to do a thing; your stuff will arrive as always on Monday the 17th.) We’re doing this to take all steps possible so that you receive the editions regularly, and your filters will be able to recognize if someone is attempting to mimic our “from” address and sending spam. This spam and phishing strategy by evil-doers is being used more frequently these days, and we’re working to guard against it.  The switch will happen for the Monday September 17 email of the editions.  So, please give this information to your IT folks:
