Groupon says it intends to sell 30 million shares at $16 to $18 apiece in order to raise an IPO between $480 million to $540 million, which would set its valuation in the range of $10.1 billion to $14.1 billion. The company will trade on NASDAQ under the ‘GRPN’ ticker. While these are staggering numbers indeed, the estimate falls below the original $750 million the company had intended to raise when it filed for an IPO in June. While it hasn’t been the easiest summer for the company as it’s suffered through criticisms of poor accounting practices, the viability of its business model and the loss of numerous executives, Groupon’s Q3 2011 performance reveal several positives. The company showed it is capable of decreasing marketing costs and raising revenue, as evidenced by a 426% revenue increase year-over-year, and 9.6% over the previous quarter, to $430.2 million.
 
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Hollywood’s latest attempt at keeping its disc-business alive has not gotten off on the right foot. According to GigaOM, early reviews of UltraViolet, the studios’ new cloud-based digital movie service, are almost entirely negative. Among the problems cited from angry users are the inability to download digital files (admittedly, the service emphasizes streaming, but does not make that distinction on the packaging), inability to stream on Firefox, a crashing Flixter app and disappearing streams in the cloud lockers.
 
Nintendo announced that Hulu Plus will finally be coming to the Wii and 3DS gaming consoles by the end of the year. It will join Netflix, which already exists on the Wii and 3DS.
 
Time Warner Cable has launched a new six-episode talk show series that focuses on the impact of African Americans in the world of entertainment, sports, technology and community, reports Multichannel News. Born to Shine, which is hosted by four winners of a national contest, will be available on the cable operator’s VOD platform.
 
Fox Sports and Telemundo have grabbed the respective English and Spanish media rights for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups away from the current broadcasters, ESPN and Univision. Specifically, Fox and NBC-owned Telemundo have media rights from 2015 to 2022, which includes both men’s and women’s World Cup events. No details were given as to what price both networks paid to beat out ESPN and Univision.
 
In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month in November, HealthiNation is producing new programming that will be available across the health and lifestyle media company’s channels, including online, digital cable and connected TV. The initiative begins with a new episode of True Champions, which profiles people affected by diseases, on diabetes. Four new programs will follow that will shine a light on how to deal with the disease when it comes to travel, dieting, social events and alcohol.
 
BET.com‘s 8 Days a Week, 10-episode web series that follows the narrative of a group of young adults trying to make it into Hollywood, will air on BET as a special one-hour episode, according to Multichannel News. The network also notes that if the episode succeeds with viewership, it might pick it up as a TV series.
 
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

In the ongoing spectrum battle in D.C., the Coalition for Free TV and Broadband argued that allowing broadcasters to use some of their spectrum to offer over-the-top wireless services, instead of auctioning off some of their broadband spectrum, would be the most efficient way to manage wireless spectrum traffic and demands; and also would prove to be the most lucrative for the U.S. Treasury. The Coalition, made up of low-power stations, is trying to persuade Congress to not enact legislation that would force broadcasters to give up spectrum to wireless carriers.
 
Apple
has added another carrier for the iPhone, joining AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. As of last week, regional wireless carrier C Spire, formerly known as Cellular South, has started taking pre-orders for Apple’s mobile phone. There is still no word on whether the iPhone will appear on T-Mobile soon, or if at all.
 
 

  ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

The latest data from the comScore Video Metrix service shows that 182 million internet users in the U.S. watched online video content in September, averaging 19.5 hours per viewer. Total U.S. audience video views reached 39.8 billion, with Google and VEVO leading the way at 18.6 billion and 748.1 million views, respectively.
 
According to data from research firm research2guidance, 37% of published apps on the Android Market were later removed, compared to only 24% for Apple, as of the end of September 2011. The firm attributes the discrepancy to Apple’s stricter guidelines for developers to submit and get an app on to the store. In fact, 78% of the removed apps from the Android Market were for free, which the firm says could mean publishers put more effort into their paid apps. Other general data from the research finds that the number of published apps on the Android Market surpassed 500,000 in September with Apple slightly ahead at over 600,000 successful submissions. ~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
My Secret Folder is an iOS app that stores all of your private information, from videos and photos that you don’t want other people checking out, to password information and private notes that you always want to have by your side, but once again, don’t want to be easily accessible for other people. The app, which is available for $0.99, appears like it is a regular folder with apps inside. When you tap it, it not only prompts you for a second password to gain access, but the password form also acts as a security camera by secretly taking a picture of the nosy intruder.
 
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Mimi Gilligan has been promoted to Head of Business Affairs and Content Distribution at Atlantic Productions. A member of the film and production company since 2004, which recently scored some Emmy wins for David Attenborough’s First Life, Gilligan will now oversee the distribution of Atlantic’s content through its partners and channels.
