Universal Music is in talks with Sony BMG and Warner Music about launching a downloadable music subscription service to challenge iTunes’ dominance. The service, dubbed Total Music, would be optimized for rival devices such as the Microsoft Zune and would be free to the user. In the proposed Total Music model, device manufactures would pay the music companies for access to their catalogs.
LIN Television is planning to launch dedicated YouTube channels for all 31 of its local TV stations by the end of the year, reports B&C, offering a mixture of news and user generated content. Lin works with video hosting firm Vmix to enable users to submit video and photos to its local station sites. Hearst-Argyle Television and Tribune stations also operate video channels on YouTube.
Hearst-Argyle Television launched HighSchoolPlaybook.com powered by social network software provider Sparta Social Networks. The latest dedicated high school sports site launched by a station group combines social networking with newsgathering and leverages resources of Hearst-Argyle stations including trained student journalists equipped with Canon HD camcorders. Seven Hearst-Argyle markets are participating so far.
The Weather Channel Interactive launched an application for the iPhone and iPod touch to deliver current conditions, hourly and 10-day weather forecasts. Created by The Weather Channel Mobile, the app maps in a fully interactive environment and offers functionality like sliding pages and “fade ins.” Look for it on weather.com or Apple’s new web applications page.

Online independent movie downloading service Jaman.com added social networking features and enhanced search functionality. The new Movie Finder feature recommends videos based on user ratings. The site shares revenue from pay-for-play downloads with participating filmmakers.
Cambridge, Mass-based Maven Networks became the latest online video company to form an online video ad platform. Maven, which manages and distributes video for CBS’ CSTV, Fox News and TV Guide among others, is now offering to syndicate video to multiple affiliates, baking in social networking features including user voting, commentary and tagging. A patent-pending ad insertion engine dynamically determines optimal ad viewing points and audience segments. The system also offers new ad formats such as transparent overlays and video telescoping. Oglivy has agreed to become one of Maven’s charter clients.
Omnicon’s Diversified Agency Services acquired a minority stake in Millions of Us, a San Francisco-based start-up that builds games and online destinations for virtual world site Second Life. 20th Century Fox, Toyota and Pontiac are among the agency’s clients.
Cinema advertising company Screenvision signed a deal with Geico to launch a long form ad starring the famous Cavemen characters. The two-minute spot finds the three Cavemen in their high-rise apartment serenading a room full of women with Sinatra’s “Everything Happens to Me.” The ad is intended to drive traffic to Geico’s interactive site www.cavemanscrib.com.
Nielsen launched DemoWatch, a new feature of its web-based commercial tracking service KeepingTrac that will enable advertisers to monitor demographic composition of their advertising audiences. DemoWatch links the demographic information from Nielsen’s overnight ratings with the commercial monitoring ability of KeepingTrac to help advertisers and their agencies make sure their television commercials reach the intended audience.
Online users spend more time on CNN.com than any other news and information site on the internet including Wikipedia, according to a CNN analysis of a Home and Work Panel from Nielsen/NetRatings that measures time spent online. CNN Digital Network registered more than 1 billion total usage minutes for September, compared to 679,000 minutes for MSNBC Digital Network and 375,000 minutes for the Fox News Digital Network, two direct competitors.
Akamai Technologies announced the election of Jill A. Greenthal, a Senior Advisor in Private Equity at the Blackstone Group, to its Board of Directors.
John Missale joins the cinema advertising firm Screenvision in the new position as Chief Technology Officer. John will be responsible for advancing the company through new technology opportunities that include new media, digital and internal technical strategies and executions.
Amazon launched High-def 101 to educate consumers on the ins and outs of HD entertainment. CNET it’s not, but it does a pretty good job of comparing and contrasting brand names and explaining some of the technological jargon a big box retail associate is likely to throw at you.
