Cynopsis: DIGITAL 10/11/10 Good morning, it’s Monday, October 11, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here. The Writers Guild of America weighed in on net neutrality expressing concerns that a less-open Internet would hamper opportunities for writers. In comments submitted to the FCC for its “Proposed Rulemaking in the Matter of Preserving the Open Internet,” the WGAE said if broadband providers create specialized services or different tiers of services, such efforts would “squander the enormous potential of digital media to expand our intellectual, artistic, and entertainment options.” The WGAE added: “It would force writers and other creators to abandon their independent projects and to sign on with the megastudios. Of course, our members do work for these megastudios, and many of them make good livings doing so; a handful have been able to express their own unique voices under the current system (especially when they have penned blockbuster hits in the past).” The WGAE also took aim at the proposed NBC-Comcast merger citing it as an example of the type of vertical integration that can lead to “anticompetitive handling of content.” Net neutrality continues to be a hot button topic in the digital media business, though no immediate resolution appears in sight.
