Cynopsis: Kids!
11/08/10
Good morning. It’s Monday, November 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney Channel announced it will officially launch its new Disney Junior K2-7/family multiplatform brand this coming February 2011. Disney Junior will debut content on the network, in place of its Playschool Disney programming block, as well as a new integrated website, VOD, mobile and paid download platforms. Disney Junior, which will focus its efforts heavily on social values and age appropriate behavior and somewhat less on education-based curriculum, will be available on basic cable in more than 99 million US homes and to millions of other viewers on 25 Disney Junior channels (currently Playhouse Disney channels) and free-to-air broadcast partners around the world. As planned, in 2012 the new Disney Junior will launch as a 24/7 basic cable and satellite channel in the US, taking over channel space currently held by the 10-year-0ld Soapnet channel. Disney Junior will feature both new and existing programming. Among the new programs will be: Jake and the Never Land Pirates featuring the voice of David Arquette and original music by The Never Land Pirate Band; Disney Poetry Shorts featuring poems for kids set against classic Disney animation; the short form series Mickey Mousekersize and Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps, the latter featuring the voices of Sean Astin and Brad Garret, while both series fall under Disney’s Magic Healthy Living initiative; Babar and the Adventures of Badou; and Tinga Tinga Tales.
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment 3D CGI animated feature film Despicable Me jumped over the $500 million worldwide box office hurdle over the weekend. With a domestic gross of $248 million, Despicable Me now stands second only to Toy Story 3 ($414 million) as the biggest domestic grossing animated movie of the year, and the 10th most successful animated movie ever in domestic gross. Despicable Me becomes the sixth most successful movie that Universal has ever distributed domestically. Overseas, the movie’s box office take is at $247 million, becoming the studio’s top grossing movie internationally for 2010. The movie has not yet opened in China. Despicable Me will release on Blu-ray and DVD on December 14, 2010.
Will Sally Field and Martin Sheen take on the roles of Spider-Man‘s Aunt May and Uncle Ben in the new Columbia Pictures‘ Spidey movie? Well it’s all over the web … so to speak … but there is no official word from the studio as of yet. Directed by Marc Webb, the cast of the new Spider-Man movie already includes Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and Rhys Ifans as the still to be announced villain. The movie is slated for a 3D release on July 3, 2012.
In other Spider-Man related news … the previews and opening of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark have been delayed, per Playbill. The Julie Taymor musical, which features music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and The Edge, which was to have begun previews on November 14 will now begin November 28, with the opening night shifting from December 21, 2010 to January 11, 2011. While some have cited safety issues, following a series of accidents that occurred during flying scenes in rehearsals, Producer Michael Cohl said in a statement:
- “Shows like ours, that embrace the challenge of opening on Broadway without an out-of-town tryout, often need to adjust their schedules along the way. Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark has an unprecedented level of technical artistry, and getting it right takes time. We apologize in advance to any inconvenienced ticketholders.”
