Google fired back at the perceived hypocrisy of Facebook on Friday, banning the 500 million user social network from allowing users to connect their Gmail accounts to their profiles to begin mining for friends. Until now, Facebook users were permitted to give permission to peer through Google contact lists utilizing the Google Contact API. But the industry has seen little reciprocation for such generous data sharing practices on the part of Facebook, a one-way relationship Google has decided is unfair. Google has built its principles on open standards but has clearly decided in this case that openness only works if it’s returned.
Once weekly news magazine US News and World Report announced it will all but shutter its print edition, transitioning to an ad supported web-only edition. (The magazine, staffed mostly by freelancers, still plans to publish 8 print editions a year, continuing to focus on rankings such as “best colleges” and “best hospitals.”
Not to be confused with the SNL classic, Yahoo just launched a new Weekend Edition news site featuring video magazine reports and feature-themed items. Buick is the exclusive banner and video sponsor of the new site.

Shares of WiMax wireless internet venture Clearwire went South after the company warned investors it was working through a dispute about wholesale pricing that shaved about $17 million off the revenue it was expecting for the quarter. The company also announced it would cut 15% of its workforce to save on capital spending, but is expected to have to continue to seek billions in funding in order to finish building out its network. Clearwire says it is on track to reach 120 million potential customers by the end of 2010.
The number of apps in the Apple App Store grew from just under 200,000 in April 2010 to over 300,000 in October 2010, and the proportion of iPad-only applications outgrew the proportion of universal applications during Q2, according to app store analytics firm Distimo. The Federal Trade Commission has appointed internet privacy expert Edward Felten, Founding Director of the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University, as its first-ever Chief Technologist advising on technology and policy issues. The next big search battle is being fought on mobile devices and Google has just set the bar a bit higher. Google Instant, the search giant’s next generation search product that anticipates what you’re looking for before you even finish typing the words, has made its debut on the two hottest smartphone platforms in the U.S. – (iOS4) iPhones and Android (2.2.) To try it out on your phone, type in google.com in your phone’s browser then tap the Google Instant “Turn on” link beneath the search box. (If you don’t see the “Turn on” link, try refreshing the page). The automation features are even more useful when dealing with a virtual keyboard and the “scroll to search” feature is a godsend – allowing you to easily scroll through predictions and results without having to begin a new search. Mobile browser usage continues to grow in the U.S., sparking a vibrant app vs. the browser debate, and better browser search will only add fuel to the argument that users still prefer the flexibility of a full-on browser when searching the mobile web.
