Good morning. It’s Monday, November 4, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A happy anniversary to NFL Network, which is officially 10 years old today. The channel launched on November 4, 2003 at 8p with Rich Eisen opening the new era with the line: “Your dreams have indeed come true.” Here are some random facts as the platform enters its second decade…
- Distribution: The network is now available in more than 72 million homes. At launch, it could be seen in 11.5 million homes.
- Sports Emmy Awards: the channel has now won 12 Sports Emmy Awards
- First Guest: NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue
- Original On-Air Talent: Rich Eisen, Seth Joyner & Ken Norton, Jr.
- First Game Broadcast: November 23, 2006 Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs
- Most Viewed Thursday Night Football Game: November 24, 2011 with the 49ers/Ravens drawing 12.3 million viewers
- Live Program Hours: Over 3,000 hours of live NFL coverage this year, approximately 110% more than what was offered in 2003
ABC’s battle of the unbeatens on Saturday between Miami/Florida State averaged a 5.4 rating in overnight numbers, according to Nielsen. That would mark the highest rated college football game of the day.
TNT’s coverage of the Knicks and Bulls on Thursday delivered an average of 2.6 million total viewers and a 1.6 fast national household rating, according to Nielsen. On the local front, the game generated a 9.3 metered market rating in Chicago and a 5.6 rating in New York. The Halloween doubleheader (which included the Warriors/Clippers game) delivered a 1.6 U.S. HH rating and 2.4 million total viewers, both up 14% over the network’s first Thursday night a year ago.
Around the dial, NBA TV announced that its NBA Fan Night presented by Sprint telecast of the season will feature the Lakers/mavericks tomorrow night at 8:30p. The selection was based on fan voting via NBA.com, the NBA Facebook page, NBA TV’s Facebook page, Yahoo.com, and other outlets.
Speaking of broadcast announcements, NBC used its flex selection to nab the Week 11 Chiefs/Broncos game on Sunday, November 17 at 8:30p. As a result, the Packers/Giants game will shift to 4:25p on FOX and the Chargers/Dolphins will move to 4:05p on CBS.
The NHL found its home for the 2015 National Hockey League All-Star celebration, selecting the Columbus Blue Jackets and the city of Columbus as hosts of the event. The festivities will take place Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25 and will include the NHL All-Star Skills Competition and the NHL All-Star Game. The selection will mark the first time the city has played host to the event.
In addition, the NHL also formally laid out times and broadcast plans for the league’s six regular-season outdoor games this season. The action begins of course, with the Maple Leafs/Red Wings at Michigan Stadium for the Winter Classic on Jan 1 at 1p on NBC, CBC and RDS. The Coors Light NHL Stadium Series then launches on Jan. 25 at 9:30p with the Ducks/Kings at Dodger Stadium on NBC Sports Network, CBC. Yankee Stadium then hosts the next two games in the series with Rangers/Devils on Jan. 26 at 12:30p on NBC and CBC, then Rangers/Islanders on Jan. 29 at 7:30p on NBC Sports Network. On March 1, the Penguins wrap up the series against the Blackhawks at Soldier Field at 8p. Finally, the 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic will see the Senators/Canucks battle it out on March 2 at 4p on NBC Sports Network, CBC and RDS.
If the FCC has its way, we may finally have an end to regulated blackouts. Officials are considering an end to the blackout rule linking local telecasts with sold out venues, although regulators say that leagues could still negotiate private agreement that would keep a system in place.
The PGA TOUR is partnering with the China Golf Association and event promoter China Olympic Sports Industry (COSI) for a new golf tour that will launch in 2014 with 12 tournaments throughout the country. PGA TOUR China will be open to professionals outside of China and move geographically throughout the country.
ESPN serves up coverage of the year-end Barclays ATP World Tour Finals starting today on ESPN3 with ESPN2 beginning telecasts on Thursday and running through Monday, Nov. 11, at 3p. For the first time, ESPN will also present the year-end doubles competition, headlined by American twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan. Overall, ESPN2 will showcase 10 hours with ESPN3 set for 50 hours of coverage. Cliff Drysdale calls the action on ESPN2 with analysts Brad Gilbert and Patrick McEnroe.

Some interesting numbers out of Atlanta. Representatives for the Chick-fil-A Bowl report that an estimated $44.3 million was pumped into the Atlanta economy as a result of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Aug. 31, marking the highest economic impact in the event’s six-year history. Officials released the results of an economic impact study that showed a $9.9 million increase over the previous high of $34.4 million for the LSU vs. North Carolina game in 2010. The study also showed a record $2.2 million in direct government revenue realized from lodging, sales, transportation and ticket taxes.
The New York Knicks and Chase tipped off the third season of Basketball in the Boroughs and Beyond presented by Chase, a community initiative designed to serve thousands of youth within the Tri-State area. This year, the program is being expanded to include the greater New York area, Connecticut and New Jersey, and will run from October to April with a specific region being featured each month. Events and activities include meet and greets with current and former Knicks players, contests and a free basketball clinic in each of the five boroughs.
