Cynopsis

11/20/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 21, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Citing it was an “ill-considered project” News Corporation Chairman/CEO, Rupert Murdoch said his company has canceled publication of O.J. Simpson’s book If I Did It and the two-part FOX broadcast network special that was scheduled to air next week based on the book, where Simpson talks in theory about his role in the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and Ron Goldman. In recent days, several FOX affiliates decided to not air the special stating the subject matter was in poor taste. Murdoch himself further apologized for “any pain this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown-Simpson.”

Many of you responded to the Cynopsis poll asking if you’d watch the special, when we thought Fox was still airing it. Of the several hundred of you who responded, only 2% said they would watch it. The remaining 98% responded you would not watch it, and to make your point crystal clear a variety of well known expletives were used for emphasis.  I think everyone got the point on this one! As such, your Emails to the Editor on this topic are not included here in the edition, but you can find them on the website under Emails to the Editor

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Fox‘s fall finale of Prison Break is scheduled for next week.  The show was then going on a planned hiatus until March.  The schedule has been moved up – the show will now return on January 29 at 8p.  The week prior, Fox has scheduled a recap special.

Lifetime Television rolls out a new dating reality series Gay, Straight or Taken? where one woman meets three men and after several dates, must decide which one is single to order to win a dream trip for two with him. The series debuts January 8 at 8p with two half-hour episodes. With eighteen episodes, the series is produced by Endemol USA.

MTV Networks (MTVN) announced today the results of its biggest study ever, focused on kids and youth well being around the world.  The MTV Networks International‘s Wellbeing Study took six months to complete and encompassed 5,200 interviews with K8-15 and A16-34 in 14 countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the U.S).  Some of the main findings will be included throughout this short holiday week in Cynopsis Kids and Cynopsis Multi-Cultural and International Edition.  If you are not a subscriber, you can find the daily editions online at www.cynopsis.com, click Editions.  Topics covered in today’s editions include who kids the world over feel about The Future, Happiness, Religion and Stress.

Disney and Comcast VOD are expected to announced a deal whereby some series on the Disney-owned networks will be made available for Comcast’s VOD service.  Shows included are expected to include Desperate Housewives, Lost and ABC World News with Charles Gibson, as well as programming from ESPN, Disney Channel, Toon Disney and more from ABC.  According to The Wall Street Journal, the deal calls for shows to be made available for free to Comcast VOD customers, who are able to access and watch these shows whenever they like.  Other shows from the Disney-owned networks will be made available for a fee, with movies that include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and The Guardian.   The roll out of the service will begin only in those markets where Disney owns the local ABC affiliate.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

Logo greenlit a new six-part reality series, Curl Girls, born from an original Logo documentary of the same name.  The series is currently in production and expected to debut this summer.  It follows six lesbian friends in LA through a summer of competition in friendship, romance, fashion, and, most important, surfing.  From Logo and Stone & Company, the series is exec produced by Scott Stone, Lori Kaye and Leslie Thomas of Stone & Company Entertainment.

ABC Family has cast Dawn Stern in the lead role of its pilot project Nobody, from Blueprint Entertainment, per Hollywood Reporter. Stern’s character plays a mom who in an effort to protect her daughter, chooses to give up her identity, and thereby be erased from her daughter’s and the world’s memory. With nothing else to loose, she ends up working for a covert operations division of heaven, fighting evil on earth, and keeping an eye on her family at the same time.

EMAILS TO THE EDITOR:

re:  INTERNSHIPS

RE:  Internships:  I have read with interest all of the various accounts of both those recent graduates and those somewhat further removed from their college days, such as myself in the latter group.  Internships, whether paid or unpaid, should be of use to the intern.  They should learn something. They are not there to provide “free labor”, but sadly, that’s how they are viewed by many companies.

In the last semester of my senior year of college, I interned at CBS Sports.  Thrilled to be part of big network, and in sports to boot, I was excited beyond all description and didn’t care in the slightest that this internship was unpaid.  Two days per week, nine hours per day, I paid my own way for commuting and lunch expenses, roughly $20 per week.  In exchange, I was assigned to the tape library and got to pack and unpack large boxes of tapes – ¾”, 1”, BetaSP – on their way to or from the storage facility in NJ.  The highlight of my internship was being put into a windowless room for three full days with boxes upon boxes of ¾” tapes, a big bowl of red record dots, a box of razor blades, a degauser, and instructions to scrape the labels off (face and spine) with the razors, insert a red record dot and degause the tapes.  The night before an internship day, I would cry to my boyfriend because I didn’t want to go.

In the end, I can’t say as I learned much of anything from my internship, except that I did not ever want to work in a tape library again.  It took many weeks for my cracked, sore fingers and hands to recover from the razor nicks, dust and label adhesive, and I had strained my back lifting the heavy boxes of tapes and spent the next year seeing a chiropractor.  For all of my efforts, I received no pay and a B grade, the latter of which I was incredulous.

So if you had or have a great internship, paid or unpaid, consider yourself very lucky; not everyone was/is/will be as fortunate as you.

Happy thanksgiving to all,
Annette Lellis
