MUSLIM MARKET:

Two men have been charged with terrorism for providing satellite broadcasts to U.S. customers and material support to al-Manar, Hezbollah's TV channel.  The al-Manar channel is identified as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S.  Saleh Elahwal and Javed Iqbal (a Pakistani living in the U.S. for 24 years) face a maximum of 110 years in prison each if convicted of all 11 counts brought against them.  Both pleaded not guilty and were released on bail.  The two own the Brooklyn-based HDTV Ltd., which the U.S. government claims Saleh and Javed used to negotiate with representatives of the al-Manar network to air the channel.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Logo greenlit a new six-part reality series, Curl Girls, born from an original Logo documentary of the same name.  The series is currently in production and expected to debut this summer.  It follows six lesbian friends in LA through a summer of competition in friendship, romance, fashion, and, most important, surfing.  From Logo and Stone & Company, the series is exec produced by Scott Stone, Lori Kaye and Leslie Thomas of Stone & Company Entertainment.

Lifetime is twisting the dating reality genre into a new mold … or perhaps a lack thereof.  Gay, Straight or Taken? is a new series where one woman meets three men and through a series of dates, must decide who is gay, straight or already taken. Ultimately, she must select the one single man in order to win a luxurious dream prize for two or the prize goes to the man she incorrectly chooses. The 30-minute series will premiere on January 8, 2007 from 8p with two episodes back-to-back on Lifetime Television.  Gay, Straight or Taken? is produced by Endemol USA with Joe Livecchi serves as exec producer.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

FremantleMedia Enterprises announced its slate of programming traveling to Singapore at the end of the month for the Asia Television Forum 2006.  Here's a "short" list of some of the shows … Live From Abbey Road (12x60), The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency (10x30, plus 1x60), American Inventor (1x120 premiere, 14x60), American Idol, Season 6 (30' and 60' eps), The Apprentice (60' episodes and finales), Project Runway - series three (1x60 casting special, 12x60, 2x60 finale), Falcon Beach (26x60, plus 1x120 pilot), Jamie Oliver: Australian Diary (1x60 or 1x90), Jamie At Home (13x30), Jamie's Return To School Dinners (1x75), and Jamie's Chefs: Cutting the Apron Strings (3x60).

CABLEready has concluded sales for several series and specials to six U.K. networks. ITV acquired eight episodes of urban legend investigation series Mostly True Stories, as well as the 60-minute special Firefighters.  History Channel UK picked up the 60-minute special The Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping while Sky network acquired Phobia (13x30) and Wildlife Detectives (14x30).  The irreverent documentary Combover: The Movie was taken by both Five UK and Reality TV with the latter also picking up Mostly True Stories (22x60).  Last but not least, Discovery UK renewed forensic science mystery series Crime Seen (5x60).

Today on PBS' Independent Lens program at 10p, the network will air Democracy on Deadline: The Global Struggle for an Independent Press.  The 2-hour show shadows courageous journalists and champions of independent media as they work to make, and keep, their societies free--in Afghanistan, Israel, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Sierra Leone and the U.S.  Many of the featured journalists have also provided updates on their work since filming ended and thoughts on the state of independent journalism and more at
www.pbs.org/independentlens/democracyondeadline .  Independent Lens is a co-presentation of PBS and ITVS, the Independent Television Service. ITVS is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), a private corporation funded by the American people.

After an absence of close to 10-years, Sesame Workshop and Israeli TV's HOP! Channel will re-launch Rechov Sumsum, Israel's version of Sesame Street.  The new 40-ep season launches on HOP! Channel on December 15, 2006.  While this incarnation of the series will continue to underline the importance of early educational and social skills, the new series will also focus on presenting and modeling a new set of goals that reflect and support the positive aspects of embracing and respecting the multi-cultural diversity of Israeli society.  The new episodes of Rechov Sumsum will feature live action filmed segments featuring different types of kids/families, celebrity segments and of course Muppet characters from the original series including Moshe Oofnik, an Oscar the Grouch type character, Brosh and Noah as well as new Muppet characters.  Joining the cast:  Mahboub, the first Arab-Israeli Muppet, an endlessly curious 5-yr-old character who is musically talented and likes interactive games; Abigail, an inquisitive and helpful 3-yr-old who likes to be part of the action.  Returning adult human cast members include Jewish-Israeli Tzachi and the Arab-Israeli Ibtisam. They will be joined by new neighbors including Irina, a Russian immigrant who owns the Magic Trick Shop on the street.  Production of the season was completed in September at Tel-Aviv's Meimad Studios.

Portfolio Entertainment has acquired the worldwide distribution rights for Animal Magnetism, a 26-part lifestyle/documentary series about the unique bonds between people and animals.  The company also picked up the rights to lifestyle and exercise show, Breathing Space for Yoga (65x30).  The series, hosted by Diane Bruni, mixes yoga exercises with features about yoga lifestyle related topics.

A big, big account will up for review in the first quarter or two of next year.  Johnson & Johnson is looking to open an international review for its $2.5-3.0 billion global media account.  The incumbent agencies already on J&J's roster include Omnicom Group's OMD Worldwide, Interpublic Group of Cos.' Universal McCann, U.S.-based Naked (communications planning), Interpublic's ID Media (direct-TV buying) and Aegis Group's Carat and WPP Group's Mediaedge:cia in the near future.  Carat is the incumbent for the Pfizer over-the-counter drug and personal care brands that J&J is acquiring while Mediaedge:cia handled Pfizer's interactive media buying.

MTV Networks (MTVN) announced today the results of its biggest study ever focused on kids and youth well being around the world.  The MTV Networks International's Wellbeing Study took six months to complete and encompassed 5,200 interviews with K8-15 and A16-34 in 14 countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the U.S).  We will bring you some of the main findings throughout this short holiday week.
The Future
  • Kids in developing countries were more positive about their future than those in developed nations.
    • A majority of A16-34 in developing nations expected their lives to be more enjoyable in the future, led by China with 84%. More K8-15 in developing nations expected to have more fun in the future than their counterparts in developed countries. 83% of Chinese, 69% of South African and 68% of Mexican kids expected their lives to be more fun, compared to 51% of American, 42% of French and just 30% of German kids.
    • In contrast to all developing nations except Argentina and Brazil, the majority of A16-34 in every developed country expected to earn less than their parents.  Some 79% of Indians and 78% of Chinese A16-34 believed that they will earn more than their parents. Just 17% of Japanese, 27% of Germans and 32% of French thought the same.
Happiness
  • Globally, only 43% of A16-34 asked said they were happy with the way things were. Younger children aged 8-15 were happier, but surprisingly not much more so: 57% on average.
  • However, developed nations dragged down the averages. Young people in developing countries were at least twice as likely to feel happy as their counterparts in developed nations.  More than 70% of A16-34 and 80% of K8-15 said they were happy in Argentina and Mexico, versus fewer than 30% of A16-34 and under 50% of K8-15 in the U.S. and the U.K.
Religion
  • Young people in the developing world were more religious, and there was a correlation between youth who were actively religious and happiness levels. Over half of A16-34 Indonesians, Brazilians and Indians said they were religious, compared to one in four in the U.S. and one in 10 in Sweden and Germany.
    • 76% of Japanese, 63% of French and 50% of Swedes asked said they were faithless.
    • 40% of Germans and 35% of Americans described themselves as believing in a higher power, but found traditional religious institutions too rigid.
Stress
  • One consistent finding across ages and in every country was the pressure on youth to succeed. Kids and young people are stressing about the same things as adults. More than half of 8-15 year-olds worry about getting a job. By comparison, only 34% were concerned about fitting in at school and only 25% worried about looking cool.
    • Brazilian, Indian and Mexican K8-15 were the most worried about their weight (66%, 50% and 41% respectively), while 93% of Brazilian kids, 87% of Argentinean kids and 84% of Mexican kids said that looking good was a sign of success.  Brazilian and Mexican 16-34 year-olds are the most competitive about their looks.
    • Indian and Indonesian youth are the most competitive about their income, with Argentinean youth being the least competitive about how much money they make.
    • 65% of 16-34 year-olds choose listening to music as their main form of stress relief, with television (48%) their second choice. For younger children, watching television (59%) was slightly more popular than music (58%).
