Cynopsis: Kids!
11/14/11

Good morning. It’s Monday November 14, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.

Cyn opsis: Kids! presents a new A Few Questions For…

Answering a few of our questions this week is Jeff Kinney, bestselling author and illustrator/cartoonist of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, which are published by Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams.  The sixth book in the Wimpy Kid series, Cabin Fever, releases tomorrow, November 15, 2011 with a 6-million-copy first printing.  The books have also spurred two feature films, with a third on the way.  While best known for his Wimpy Kid books, by day Jeff is the Design Director for Family Education Network‘s (FEN) educational and information websites.  In fact, Diary of a Wimpy Kid made its initial debut on FEN’s educational game site Funbrain .com, where the online version of the book has been read well over 100 million visitors (I’d say kids but I read it there first).  Jeff is also credited with creating the company’s popular virtual world Poptropica .  Jeff lives in Massachusetts with his wife, sons and their dog.  You get the picture, he’s a busy and super accomplished guy so let’s get to it…

Your new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, Cabin Fever, releases tomorrow.  In the book Greg is dealing with two kinds of being trapped one is being physically trapped at home with the family because of a snowstorm and the other he is trapped in a situation at school that might get him in trouble? What did Greg do at school to get him into trouble? What does Greg learn in the new book? Does he learn the same thing from each situation?

Greg is the victim of a big misunderstanding. He hung some home-made signs on the school advertising a Holiday Bazaar he planned to have in his basement, and when it rained, the neon-green dye in the posterboard ran and stained the brick walls. (The same kind of thing happened to me in college). Now he’s on the run as a so-called vandal. Greg doesn’t really learn a lesson in the new book, nor does he ever, really. I think it’s more fun to keep Greg clueless and let the reader make decisions for themselves.

Would you be/have been friends with Greg Heffley, the protagonist in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books?

I knew plenty of kids like Greg in elementary and middle school. What I find interesting about kids is that they’re not fully-formed people yet, and that they make plenty of mistakes that shape their character. I don’t think of Greg as a bad kid; I think of him as a work in progress.

Do you ever think about what Greg would be like as an adult? What would he be like all grown up?

I’ve always assumed Greg will grow up to be an unhappy adult, the victim of his own faulty perceptions. His childlike best friend, Rowley, however, will grow up to be a successful and happy grown-up.

When you are creating the story for a new Wimpy Kid book, do you test out your story ideas, illustrations or jokes with your kids or other kids before you commit them to paper?

I don’t. No kid reads my books until they’re done. In fact, the only kid who has read my book up to this point is my eight-year-old son, and he seemed to like it.

We understand Fox will release a third Wimpy Kid movie in August 2012. Can you reveal any details?

Yes. The third movie is about Greg’s summer vacation. It’s a mix of the third and fourth books, with a heavy emphasis on the fourth. I was there for about 2/3rds of filming, and I think kids will enjoy seeing Greg in a non-school setting.

Could there be an animated or live-action TV series perhaps? E-book?

I’m really hoping to develop an animated holiday special with an eye towards a television series. Fingers crossed! I’d really like to see Greg in animated form. I’d like to create e-books but we’ll see what the new year brings.

The cover of each book in the series is a different color. Did you envision it that way or was it born out of the marketing and advertising plan the publisher had for the series? Is the color your choice?

I think it just sort of happens. We didn’t plan a candy-colored series, but by book three, we realized we were locked in. Yes, each color is my choice. I’d like to do a nice lime green one day!

And why is each book exactly 224 ages?

Books are printed in 16-page signatures, and we landed on 14 signatures. We kept each book the same length because I wanted them to be the same size when lined up on a bookshelf. Also, it creates a kind of structure that I have to work within. Cartoonists like boundaries… it creates a challenge.

The Wimpy Kid books have been credited with helping draw “reluctant” readers to books.  Were you a big reader as kid and teen?

I was an above-average reader. I read Judy Blume’s catalogue as a kid and moved into fantasy in the fifth grade.

You created Poptropica, a virtual world for kids that has more than a million visitors every 24 hours. What happens there? Are parents and kids playing on Poptropica together?

Poptropica is a place where we can tell lots of different types of stories in many different genres… fantasy, humor, history. It’s a great playground for the creative and talented staff we have. I think parents get involved when kids hit a stumbling point and they call out to mom or dad to get them unstuck.

In 2009, you were named one of TIME magazine’s most influential people. Since that honor was bestowed, have you felt very influential, as if people are really paying attention?

I wish I could say that I have! I guess it depends on the setting. In a book setting, perhaps, but when I’m trying to get out of taking my dog for a walk when it’s raining, not so much.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Ambience Entertainment in partnership with Chocolate Liberation Front (CLF) has begun production on the animated Australian TV series The Adventures of Figaro Pho (13×30) at Iloura‘s film and television VFX studio in Alexandria, NSW.  The series is set to premiere on ABC3 (Australia) in 2012.  The Adventures of Figaro Pho is based on a series of 26 shorts created for ABC TV (Australia) in 2008.  The Figaro Pho property was created by kid’s illustrator and creator/director Luke Jurevicius.  The series follows the charming and yet mischievous Figaro Pho who suffers from every weird phobia known.  Additionally, Creative Director Deane Taylor (Popeye, The Pink Panther, Ren & Stimpy and Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas) serves as art director on the series.  ZDF Enterprises has acquired distribution rights to Figaro Pho for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with Distribution 360 taking all rights for Canada.  ABC Commercial, which is also the distributor of the original Figaro Pho shorts, holds distribution rights for the rest of the world including the US, Australia, Asia and South America.

CBBC (UK) picks up a new kid targeted series about biology, medicine and health from London-based Maverick TV (Embarrassing Bodies), per Broadcast Now.  Using a sense of humor, the yet to be titled series (13×30) will focus on how the human body works by following cases of kids who overcome illnesses.  The show will also include segments filmed in hospitals where viewers will gain an understanding of the different jobs and what goes on there, with the aim of taking some of the scariness of going to the hospital.  Expected to commence production in January 2012, the new series slated to debut in fall 2012.  Maverick TV is owned by All3Media.
