CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/08/06

Good Morning. It’s Monday, May 8, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

When the reps at Warner Bros. Domestic TV Syndication bring out Two and Half Men this week for the Fall 2007 season, they’ll be selling both the small screen off-net rights and the internet rights.  In addition to the standard TV rights, stations who pick up the show will be able to stream episodes on their websites 5x week, after their initial airing of the episode on television. Stations will also have local inventory in the webisodes.  As for the future cable network who picks up the series, probably for the 2010 season, it too will have the same internet rights as local stations.  WBDTD will retain the rights to sell episode downloads of the series via iTunes or other internet “stores”, and will also do what it can to prevent the unlicensed streaming of the show on non-licensed sites.

Tonight’s Finales:
WB:  7th Heaven series finale at 8p
UPN:  Girlfriends at 9p
ABC: What About Brian? at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The ABC Television Network has an agreement with four affiliate station groups to participate in the ABC.com streaming video test.  The two-month test will include full-length, ad supported episodes of four major ABC series – Lost, Desperate Housewives, Alias and Commander in Chief, each available online at ABC.com the day after their primetime premiere on the linear channel. Consumers will be able to pause, move back and forth between chapters within each episode, but not be able to fast forward thru commercials. The five stations participating in the test by providing on-air promotional messages and links to ABC.com’s test on their own websites are Belo Corporation‘s WFAA/Dallas, Cox Broadcasting’s WFTV/Orlando, Hearst-Argyle Television‘s WISN/Milwaukee and Young Broadcasting‘s WATE/Knoxville, and ABC-owned KABC/Los Angeles.

Dick Askin announced his departure as President/CEO of Tribune Entertainment effective May 17. John Reardon, President/CEO of Tribune Broadcasting, will oversee Tribune Entertainment. Dick, who serves as Chairman/CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, has managed the production and distribution activities for many series and movie packages including South Park, the DreamWorks SKG film library and American Idol Rewind.

Fox OKs two more dramas for 2006-07 season: Primary from 20th about two hostage negotiators who are also negotiating their own relationship; and American Crime from Jerry Bruckheimer and Warner Bros. TV is an ensemble drama series of high-profile defense attorneys.

The broadcast upfronts are next week, and this week promises to be full of all sorts of rumors.  So let’s get you started on your water cooler fodder, tho keep in mind all of this is rumor and nothing is definite until the announcements next week:

ABC:  time to move Desperate Housewives to Monday evening filling the football void? And will the bubble burst under George Lopez or will he get picked up again?  As for pilot pickups to series, rumors are swirling around Secrets of a Small Town and Daybreak
CBS:  Will King of Queens return in the fall?  Some suggest the outlook is good for both freshman series The New Adventures of Old Christine and The Unit, and a potential series orders for pilots Company Town and Shark.  Without a Trace moving from its Thursday 10p berth to Sundays?
NBC:  ER moving off of Thursday night to make way for the new Studio 60 series?  Likely pilot pickup rumors include Friday Night Lights and Heroes
Fox:  Looking at renewals of War at Home and bringing back Futurama?
CW:  No Reba?  Will 7th Heaven get past tonight’s finale and be renewed for next fall?  And what new shows will be on the CW this fall – perhaps Runaway, but Aquaman may not.

Don’tcha just love upfront season?

MyNetworkTV has added five new affiliates to its stable of stations, taking its clearance to 73% of the U.S. in 126 markets. The markets include:

The products include t-shirts, track jackets, headgear and accessories such as wrist cuffs, posters and dog tags, chains and pins, all designed by Aaron McGruder, creator of the 6-year old comic strip on which the show is based.

1886 – The world’s first Coca-Cola was sold in Atlanta, Georgia at Jacob’s Pharmacy. Sold by Dr. John S. Pemberton, the beverage became one of the nation’s most popular fountain drinks within a few short years. The original formula for Coca-Cola contained small extracts of the narcotic cocaine until 1905 when the recipe was changed.
