CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

05/08/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, May 8, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

No surprise here – Pixar Animation Studios shareholders approved the acquisition of the company by Disney, in a deal worth about $7.4 billion, at a shareholders meeting on Friday.  In the all-stock transaction, 2.3 Disney shares will be issued for each Pixar share.  Dr. Ed Catmull, who had been President of Pixar, will now serve as President/Pixar and Disney animation studios, reporting to Robert Iger, President/CEO, Disney Co., and Disney Studios Chairman, Dick Cook.  John Lasseter, who had been EVP/Pixar, will be Chief Creative Officer of the animation studios and Principal Creative Advisor, Walt Disney ImagineeringSteve Jobs, previously Pixar Chairman/CEO, now sits on Disney’s Board of Directors as a non-independent member.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

When DreamWorks Animation releases it new CG animated feature Over the Hedge on May 19, it will be preceded by the animated short titled First Flight in some 400 theaters in NY and LA.  Created by DreamWorks’ Cameron Hood and Kyle Jefferson, First Flight was produced by Maryann Garger and co-produced by Pilar Flynn.

Writer Chris Weitz has been selected, again, to direct the movie adaptation of The Golden Compass, the first chapter in author Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials book trilogy, per Hollywood Reporter.  Weitz, who penned the screenplay for the New Line Cinemas movie, left the project last year.  The movie was then to be directed by Anand Tucker, who has now departed the movie project over creative differences.  New Line is still targeting The Golden Compass for release on November 16, 2007.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Encore Wam will premiere the second season of it series Get Outta Town next summer 2007.  Get Outta Town follows hosts Barbara Mamabolo and Joseph Motiki as they travel around the world meeting up with local teens and spending the day with them to see what their lives are like.  The series is created and produced by The Nightingale Company in association with Encore.

J. C. Penney Company, Inc. has unveiled plans for its JC Penney Jam … The Concert For America’s Kids, at the Shrine Auditorium in LA, on June 14.  Hosted by Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw, with producer/songwriter/musician David Foster serving as Music Director, the concert will be taped and will air on CBS on August 22.  The goal of the concert is to support the need for quality afterschool programs and provide funds so all families can take part in such programs.  Additionally, the concert will be produced as a special two-disc DVD/CD combined package that will be available exclusively at JCPenney stores and online at jcp.com and AOL.com.  Performers scheduled to appear include Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans and Martina McBride, Christina Aguilera, 3 Doors Down and Andrea Bocelli, and Alehandro Sanz.  Both Jon Bon Jovi and Sting will record special performances and messages to be shown at the concert.

MARKETING/LICENSING

PlayPhone, a provider of direct-to-consumer mobile content, has inked a deal with Bandai America, Inc., to power its mobile entertainment sites BandaiWireless.com and Tamagotchi.com.  Under the agreement, Bandai will employ PlayPhone’s turnkey mobile portal and content to power its mobile content destinations and to drive usage of mobile Tamagotchi products.  Additionally, PlayPhone will receive a license to distribute Bandai’s mobile products, including Tamagotchi, Othello, Double Dragon EX, Bases Loaded, and Dark Castle through its own direct-to-consumer distribution paths.

McDonald’s and Warner Home Video will release two live-action DVDs, McKids Adventures Volume 1: Get Up and Go with Ronald, and McKids Adventures Volume 2: Treasure Hunt with Ronald, on August 15, 2006.  Designed specifically for kids as part of McDonald’s active lifestyle campaign, which encourages kids to be physically active, the McKids Adventures titles were produced in association with DIC Entertainment, the licensor of the McKids brand.

Beginning today Kohl’s Department Stores will offer special products based on DreamWorks Animation’s movie Over the Hedge to support its Kohl’s Cares for Kids program.  The products, available both in store and online, include an Over the Hedge story book and character plushes of RJ the raccoon and Verne the turtle, each selling for $5 a piece, with all proceeds going towards kid’s health and educational opportunities in communities where there are Kohl’s stores nationwide.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products awarded Nomination s.r.l, the Italian jewelry company, the worldwide rights to design a collection of jewelry based on DC Comics’ Superman and Batman characters.  Under the pact the collections, available beginning this month, feature items for everyone and will include necklaces, bracelets, earrings and jewelry accessories.  A designer of steel and gold jewelry, Nomination is probably best known for creating the “composable” charm bracelet.
