Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sent out a “Dear Jerry” letter on Saturday, officially withdrawing his bid for Yahoo. In the end, upping the offer to $33/share failed to entice the portal’s leadership, who resisted Microsoft’s advances from the get go. Now the speculation begins regarding how Yahoo and Microsoft will strengthen their positions as they continue to lose search market share to Google. Will Yahoo merge with AOL? Will Microsoft go after Facebook? Let the parlor games begin.

Viacom executives attributed a 33% Q1 profit increase to robust sales of the console game Rock Band on Friday, as the company shipped over 3 million copies and generated over 10 million song downloads since its release in November. (Nintendo Wii owners can look for a version of the game to be released next month.) Meanwhile Viacom’s TV properties have been generating their share of digital hits, according to details provided in the company’s conference call:

  • Nickelodeon online received 2.2 billion page views during Q1, thanks to cross platform hits like iCarly ( accounted for 20% of’s traffic in Feb. and even more in March when in generated 3.3 million uniques
  • MTV’s Virtual The Hills now has more than 2 million unique users
  • South Park is MTV’s best selling digital sell through to date with 7 million copies sold via iTunes and Xbox

If $15 a pop seems expensive for new movie releases on iTunes, don’t blame Apple. Apparently the company will be selling these movies, now available day-in-date with the DVD, at a $1/movie loss to help promote sales of video iPods, according to the WSJ.


Online indie film distributor/marketplace IndieFlix is working with the Seattle International Film Festival to expose a selection of 10 features and 10 shorts to a large online audience. Users, who can view the films on IndieFlix, and, in turn will determine which filmmakers receive a $1,500 cash reward and a screening of their film closing night of the 3-week fest on June 8. Voting begins on May 23, but you can sign up now for an email reminder.
Music is one way into a teen’s heart. Social music service Jango is powering a new celebrity playlist widget for Hearst Magazine’s Users can listen to music handpicked by personalities including Rihanna, Ashlee Simpson, Jordin Sparks and Brendon Urie via an embeddable co-branded jukebox application. The widget can be integrated into a host of online environments including iGoogle, Piczo and Friendster.
YouTube fans had to put up with an outage or two over the weekend, but the good news is that those InBox and My Contacts upgrades they were working on are now permanent. New thumbnail images appear in your message box of video responses other users have shared with you.

Hearst-Argyle’s WCVB in Boston is testing a new interactive TV interface powered by Backchannelmedia that enables viewers to click on “call to action” icons to request product information or make online purchases. Rather than integrating full iTV functionality, the system simply triggers an email from Backchannel containing a link to the relevant website. Storybids today announced the launch of their product placement marketplace where video content creators can get paid to feature products in user-generated videos and episodic webisodes.  Advertisers may select video content creators via a search tool that tracks views, comments and ratings across multiple video hosting sites.  Storybids closed a Series A round of financing last August.



Digital ad revenue continues to help traditional media companies cope with declines in other areas:

  • Aforementioned Hearst-Argyle Television reported a $13.7 million (or 9%) decrease in Q1 net ad sales, but digital media revenue increased by 22% to $4.9 million. The group’s local station sites increased their unique user base by 139% (to 23k), and the number of quarterly video streams delivered by 66% (to 20.7k) according to company data
  • Digital revenues were up $20 million year-over-year at Time, Inc., contributing to 15% of the growth at Sports Illustrated and 20% of the growth at CNNMoney, according to Folio will conduct research this week on inserting multiple commercials into its full episode video streams instead of single-sponsor breaks, reports THR. Look for more short form programming and interactive features to baked in as well to help make digital video more of a factor at the upfront, says TV Week.

Mobile video should get a huge boost from a new free service dubbed vTap, available from a start-up called It helps you navigate the web to find video that can be formatted for your particular phone, providing an app that transcodes each clip so that it’s compatible with Windows Mobile, Nokia, Samsung, Sanyo, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG phones. The search function has that cool feature which predicts what you’re looking for before you finish typing. There’s even a browser version that works on the iPhone. This opens up a whole new world of video beyond the limited selection of YouTube offerings currently formatted for the non-Flash compatible Apple device.
