Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Monday, May 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Hallmark Properties looks to Out of the Blue Enterprises (Super Why) to develop a new TV series based on Hallmark’s web-based property, Asteroid Andy.  Targeted to boys 6-11, Asteroid Andy is set in the future and follows the adventures of boy who lives on Earth with his family and an array of intergalactic friends.  Asteroid Andy was created by Hallmark veteran artist Peter Martin.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approves the acquisition of the Kids/Teen 2-17 targeted BBC Kids channel, a BBC Worldwide and Knowledge Canada joint venture.  The BBC Kids channel license was previously owned through a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Canada’s Shaw Media.  When Knowledge Network takes over operations of BBC Kids, the channel will be re-launched and will air commercial free 24/7, and will also feature a Cbeebies preschool programming block.  This will mark the premiere of Cbeebies in Canada.


More casting for The Hunger Games movie … the boy (un-named)/girl (Foxface) tributes from District 5 are … Chris Mark and Jacqueline Emerson.  We can expect lots more casting announcements as there are still tributes from Districts 2, 6, 7,8, 9 and 10, as well as several other characters yet to be announced.  And on that topic, New York Magazine reports that actors Woody Harrelson (possibly as the Head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane), Stanley Tucci and Lenny Kravitz are possibly up for roles in the movie.  Based on Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games books, the Lionsgate movie is directed by Gary Ross and is set for a March 23, 2012 release.


Recording artist Jordin Sparks makes a guest appearance on a new Team Umizoomi special, The Legend of the Blue Mermaid, premiering Friday, May 13, at 11:30a on Nickelodeon.  Sparks lends her voice to a blue mermaid stuck in a sand castle by a wily squid, and she will also perform an original song written for the special, Song of the Blue Mermaid.  This marks Sparks’ first time doing a voiceover role.  The special is based on the math-centric Team Umizoomi preschool series.

National Geographic Kids Books‘ updated edition of the National Geographic Kids Almanac debuts May 24, 2011 ($13.99, 350 pages and 20 maps) with new mobile media features.  The National Geographic Almanac 2012 is targeted to kids/tweens 6-12.  At the beginning of each chapter kids will find a code they can scan with a Smartphone, which will give them access to extra content, including video, further facts, games and slideshows. Throughout the book, a virtual pet, Zipper the dog, offers readers new clicks and web links where they can find even more information.

MathiGo (  ) is a new kid-targeted and math-centric app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. MathiGo ($1.99) aims to make learning math less daunting and more of a video game like challenge by offering different timed and untimed game modes and ten skill levels.  Dr. Judith Bender, who holds a Ph.D. in applied math, created MathiGo.  A portion of the profits from sales of the app will be donated to non-profit organizations for the education of children.

PBS debuts Super Why application for Android (2.1 and above), its first app for that platform, based on the PBS Kids preschool TV series of the same name.  The app, debuted for other mobile platforms last year, is designed to help preschoolers build literacy skills through interactive games, stories, and via virtual sticker book.  The Super Why app for Android ($2.99) is available in the new Amazon Appstore for Android.  The Super Why series is created by was created by Out of the Blue Enterprises.


Redbox, the automated DVD/Blu-ray rental kiosk, unveils plans to offer video game rentals ($2/day) at its 21,000 Redbox locations across the US from June 17, 2011.  Redbox will offer video games, including titles specifically for kids and families, for three game console platforms, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360.  The move follows the company’s video game rentals test program in select markets, which began in August 2009.  Redbox Automated Retail is a subsidiary of Coinstar, Inc.

Cosmic Debris enters into a licensing deal with Kellytoy USA for its property Emily the Strange ( ).  The agreement was put together by memBrain Licensing, which is has inked a range of deals for Emily.  Under the new multi-year deal, Kellytoy USA will develop a kid/teen-targeted line of Emily the Strange plush dolls and toys.  The line will include plush toys, beanie plushes, 2D and 3D pillows, clip-ons and plush backpacks, and is set to be available across North America in select retailers beginning later this year. Among the many other licensing efforts set for this year, the first Emily the Strange videogame for Nintendo DS will release nationwide this summer, simultaneous to the completion of the new band, Emily and the Strangers, first recording of original music.  Additionally, a feature film based on the property is in the works with Universal Pictures and Dark Horse Entertainment.

Justin Bieber is getting his own branded line of dental care products.  Bravado, a music merchandising company, and Ashtel Dental are partnering to launch an exclusive Justin Bieber line of dental products aimed at teens and adults.  The line includes two singing toothbrushes, manual toothbrushes, a microphone shaped flosser, dental floss, and a travel kit.  The Bieber toothbrushes ( ) have two songs (one for morning and the other for nighttime) each song clip lasting 2-minutes.  Slated for release this summer, the toothbrushes will feature Bieber songs Baby, U Smile, Love Me, and Somebody to Love.  Ashtel Dental is known for its kid-centric Brush Buddies talking toothbrushes.
