As if there was any doubt Smartphones would quickly dominate the market, now the news is official – more than half of all phones sold in the United States in the first quarter were Smartphones. That’s according to data released late last week from research firm NPD placing smartphones at 54% of the mobile phone market. Samsung finished first as the leading handset brand with 23% of the market, followed by LG at 18% and Apple at 14%. The top-selling phone, however, was Apple’s iPhone 4, driven by its availability now on Verizon’s network as well as AT&T’s. Interestingly, the Android operating system lost some market share for the first time since the second quarter of 2009, falling to 50% of all Smartphone sales from 53% the quarter before. That loss was Apple’s game because Smartphones running its iOS platform rose 9 percentage points to command 28% of Smartphone sales. Blackberry, not surprisingly, lost ground, finishing at 14% of Smartphones sales.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Who didn’t tune into the Royal Wedding, or part of it, on Friday? Not many folks sat this one out because Akamai’s early data showed the streaming numbers for sites it supported such as  Fox News, E! Online, Associated Press, and CBS registered a higher peak of concurrent users than for the World Cup last year. Traffic to global news sites also spiked, with a peak of close to 5.4 million page views per minute when North American sites began covering the event in depth, as Americans woke up to watch. Several news sites also fared well with royal coverage. CNN reported that through 10 a.m. on Friday morning, CNN.com had logged 21.5 million page views, up 61% compared to the same Friday a week before. Video use shot sky high at 3.9 million video starts through 10 a.m., up nearly 5 times the prior Friday.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Social media startup LocalResponse recently launched its beta site at LocalResponse.com, offering a tool for businesses to aggregate information on check-ins across social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, foursquare, Gowalla and Instagram. By collecting and reporting on check-in data in real time, the platform also lets businesses respond to some of those check-ins and messages when needed. The company is working with several major brands and plans to introduce tools for advertising in the coming weeks, LocalResponse said.

  ~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

General Mills logged a healthy uptick in Web visits with its first ever daily deal offered on Groupon last month. The company became the first large CPG to offer a daily deal (on Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal), and Groupon’s market share of visits on Thursday April 21 was up 18% over the prior Thursday, said Experian Hitwise in an analysis of the promotion. “On the day of the deal Groupon’s share of Rewards and Directories traffic had a 20% bump in comparison to [April 14]. This indicates that both Groupon and CPG companies could benefit from similar promotions, as Groupon will profit from increased traffic and the CPG companies win further audience exposure,” Experian Hitwise said.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Hulu and Microsoft are officially bedfellows. Hulu’s subscription service Hulu Plus launched on the Xbox 360 on April 29th. The service will be free for the first week thanks to a Jack’s Link sponsorship. After that, Xbox 360 customers will have access to Hulu content from networks such as ABC, Fox, Comedy Central and MTV for $7.99 per month. 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

As part of its ongoing research into the mindset of today’s tech-savvy men, SpikeTV has concluded that men are in love with their cell phones. In its Smartphone study, Spike TV found that iPhone users are hottest for their devices, with 93% professing love, compared to 89% of Android users and 80% for Blackberry owners. Half of men confess to feeling addicted to their phones. Other interesting findings – 72% of men use maps or GPS more than before, while 70% check the weather more. Men are also using phones to enhance their shopping experiences – 45% research purchases, 23% get updates on coupons or deals, and 17% buy products from online stores. Given these behaviors, SpikeTV suggested marketers can better reach men through mobile phones by keeping in mind that the best opportunities are in enhancing the shopping experience, perhaps via an app to make it easier to research products.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Video hotspotting technology company Clikthrough has rolled out additional content via its partnership with AOL & Kohl’s to showcase clickable video for Kohl’s fashions. The videos are distributed across the AOL Network and 5min.com.

As part of its expansion into mobile, PBS rolled out its first Android app, the Super Why app based on the network’s preschool series of the same name. The app has been available on other Smartphones and mobile platforms since 2010. To date, PBS has logged more than 2 million downloads of all PBS apps.

HBO expanded into mobile with the launch of its HBO Go service on Android and Apple mobile platforms last week. HBO Go lets HBO subscribers watch HBO shows online; the apps make that same service available now on Android phones, iPhones and iPads. Users can watch HBO’s current lineup of shows as well as library content from the network.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Digital content business Spirit Digital Media hired digital specialist Zev Suissa as Creative Director to oversee a development slate of original properties for multiple platforms. He previously worked for Agility Studios. Spirit Digital Media is a UK media firm headed by former Endemol executive Peter Cowley.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

We spend so much time talking about online media, but what about media you can actually see that’s not on your own computer? To celebrate “Earth Night” last month, the media company Pearl Media introduced an out-of-home 3-D architectural projection mapping installation at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood to launch the new Lexus CT 200h hybrid.
