The cable cowboy has got his sites set on an eReader platform. Shares of bookseller Barnes & Noble jumped by 30% on Friday after receiving a $1 billion, $17/share buyout offer from John Malone’s Liberty Media Corp. B&N’s color Nook eReader, which recently added its own app store and email program, has grown in popularity while the chain’s brick-and-mortar stores have suffered, accounting for an estimated 25% of the eReader market in the U.S. Online revenue, where website and digital content purchases are tallied, also surged 52% to $319.4 million last quarter. If the deal goes through, Liberty would acquire approximately 70% of the company.
The LATimes is reporting that Apple has already reached “tentative agreements” with the 4 major record labels to launch a cloud-based music service. The company, which used its annual developer’s conference to announce its personalized Ping music service last year, would like to unveil the service at the June event if contracts with Warner Music Group, Sony Music Group, EMI Group and Universal Music Group can be nailed down.
Tel-Ad Broadcasting has launched its History HD service in the Hebrew language on the YES satellite service in Israel, featuring 100% HD Content from AETN. History HD is Tel-Ad’s 9th operated channel in the region.
Popular location-based service Loopt has teamed up with deals site Groupon to insert localized Groupon offers from around the Chicago area into Loopt apps. Any or all of Loopt’s 5 million+ members will be alerted when they come in the vicinity of a participating discount and users can pull up icons when scrolling around the area. The integration is launching to Loopt’s iPhone and Andriod apps and will soon expand nationwide.
LA-based digital content company GreenScreen Animals has secured series A financing to provide HD-quality (and American Humane Association-approved) stock footage of exotic and domestic animals over green screen. The company is being headed by former PriceGrabber.com President Laura Conrad as CEO and its footage has already been used in numerous viral/web spots as well as for the Jimmy Kimmel Show and Jay Leno.
Zynga, DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures announced the first-ever advertising integration within Zynga’s CityVille, currently the most popular application on Facebook with nearly 90 million users. CityVille players will be prodded to engage in a new Kung Fu Panda 2 themed quest and receive an exclusive Kung Fu Panda 2 in-game item to promote the upcoming opening of the sequel on May 26th.
Mobile dating app Flirtomatic is announcing that it has chosen the Mocean Mobile ad serving platform as its infrastructure partner to help monetize the mobile service.
Senate Commerce Subcommittee members intensified pressure on tech giants Google, Facebook and Apple at a hearing on Thursday, questioning how much consumers understand of what’s being shared and how their personal information is being used. “I ask you to work with application developers, both large and small, to create better privacy notices and controls that work in the mobile world,” read Chairman John D. Rockefeller at the hearings, who also asked executives to show whether the applications running on their mobile platforms are in compliance with children’s online privacy laws. An executive at Facebook pushed back, warning that stringent privacy protections would mute the power of the social web and its ability to stimulate the flow of information.
A recent survey of nearly 12,000 connected devices found that tablets and smartphones have become indispensable to the practice of watching TV, according to Nielsen. Not so much so for eReaders, which have just begun to add apps and other social features. Seventy percent of tablet owners and 68% of smartphone owners said they use their devices while watching television, compared to only 35% of eReader owners. eReaders do tend to be more nocturnal devices, however. Sixty-one percent of eReader owners use their device in bed, compared to 57% of tablet owners and 51% of smartphone owners.
Using the internet as a research tool has led shoppers to be less impulsive online than in stores, according to a new Yahoo research study dubbed “The Gamesmanship of Shopping”. The internet has become the most trusted medium to research information about product and services, with 69% of those surveyed stating they trusted the information they found online (compared to 43% for magazines and 35% for TV.) And shopping is becoming increasingly social; nearly 50% of the 2,500 surveyed give advice to others online, suggesting that marketers must provide incentives to interest consumers in viral sharing.
Overall web activity decreased slightly in April, with most brands declining in unique audience and time spent per person, according to Nielsen. YouTube increased U.S. visitors over the prior month, with average visitors spending 2.9% more time on the website in April. Visitors to AOL’s network of sites also spent more time on average, about 5% longer during April.

Former Marvel EVP of Digital Media Ira Rubenstein was tapped by Twentieth Century Fox to oversee all domestic digital marketing activities as EVP/Digital Marketing. He will report from Monday to Chief Marketing Officer Oren Aviv and Chief Creative Officer Tony Sella.
Relaunched video portal Joost has hired Kerry Edelstein as VP/Research and Analytics. In this newly created position, the former SmithGeiger VP will oversee research surrounding performance metrics, brand impact and content effectiveness in online video. Joost has also hired Jesse Judelman as Regional Sales Director, overseeing sales operations on the West Coast.
Microsoft’s Bing search engine completed an integration with Facebook last week that brings several social-themed personalization features to its web search, shopping, travel, and toolbar products. The idea for the “decision engine,” as Bing likes to be called, is to tap the advice of friends, family and contacts for your daily searches. Products or trips your friends have “liked” will appear amidst the fact-based results while strangers’ input is also factors in. Bing taps into what it refers to as a crowd-sourced “Collective IQ” to push popular destinations up to the top of your search results and takes special care in integrating recent Facebook posts into the mix to put a premium on timeliness.
