Apple is in talks with several record labels including the 4 majors Universal, Sony, Warner Music and EMI to update its iTunes software to allow purchased tracks to play on any iTunes-enabled device, according to Bloomberg. The idea is to move toward a cloud-based solution that would allow you to download a song you already purchased as many times as you like as you add digital devices to your collection, for no extra cost. Apple, which has faced heavy criticism for the limitations imposed by its DRM protections, is trying to stay ahead of streaming music services like Pandora and Spotify, the latter which is reportedly pursuing a U.S. launch.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Shanghai-based online video site Todou struck a deal with Disney Media Distribution to bring full episodes and entire seasons of popular shows to the portal. The first 5 seasons of Criminal Minds, the first 6 seasons of Lost and the initial season of Cougar Town will be available on demand in HD format on China’s leading video site.
 
Time Warner Cable has added entire catch-up seasons of NBC’s Parks & Recreation, Parenthood, The Event, Outsourced and Perfect Couples to its Primetime On Demand service.
 
Cox Communications struck a deal with Time Warner to offer its subscribers access to the HBO Go and Max Go online services, which greatly expanded their available catalogs last week.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

The stunning topography of the Canadian Yukon is featured in the new treasure seeking HD web series Yukonic, produced by the Yukon Film & Sound Commission as away to attract location scouts to the area. New Yorkers may have already seen it – the 13-episode series debuted on the MTV video board in Times Square last week.
 
Can’t make it Mardi Gras this year? 24/7 webcam network EarthCam has launched an audio and video feed shot from a balcony on Bourbon Street. A total of three live views will be available on Fat Newsday to cover Mardi Gras Madness.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Online TV search and discovery guide Clicker has been purchased by CBS Interactive for an undisclosed amount. The company will be integrated with CBS’ TV.com, which hosts one of the web’s most extensive metadata stores for broadcast and cable shows. Clicker, which launched 18 months ago and has since added applications for a wide range of connected devices, had raised $19 million in financing to date.
 
Republican Senators Jim DeMint (S.C.) and Tom Coburn (Okla.) introduced a bill on Friday to cut all funding to public radio and television, claiming that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has received nearly $4 billion in taxpayer money in the past decade. They also pointed to high salaries of several noncommercial executives.
 
The Justice Dept. is investigating whether the MPEG LA, the patent licensing group which oversees the H.264 video codec, is unfairly stifling a competing technology dubbed VP8 released last year by Google, per the WSJ. Google’s solution has been released as a royalty-free standard available to developers under an open license.
 
After being beset by a number of malicious Android applications uploaded to the Android Market, Google is moving quickly to remove the offending apps both from the store and from affected devices, according to a post from Android Security Lead Rich Cannings. The company is also encouraging users to download a security update to prevent attackers from gaining any further information from the infected devices.
 
Internet traffic stopped flowing across civil war-torn Libya from late Thursday, according to a transparency report from Google, indicating that the Libyan authorities have once again shut down the nation’s ISP to attempt to stifle the flow of information about the uprising.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~
 

 
Twitter
introduced an update to its iPhone and iPad apps that add features that make it easier to upload photos, shorten links and view location-based trends. A new Quick Bar feature (currently only available on the iPhone) includes promoted tweets, one of the start-up’s few sources of ad revenue. Users are already complaining that the feature cannot be disabled.
 
Nintendo‘s new 3DS handheld gaming system, which supports 3D content without the use of special glasses, is working on integrating with Netflix to support wireless movie streaming by the summer. The company also announced a deal with AT&T to allow 3DS users to connect to over 10,000 AT&T hot-spots across the U.S. for free. The 3DS is scheduled to launch in the U.S. on March 27 for $250.
 
The Godfather film franchise, the subject of a widely distributed EA console game, has been tapped by Oceanside Interactive for a new iPhone/iPod Touch game. Gameplay in the free Godfather Empire app revolves around building up the family’s power by recruiting over 200 associates, ranging from Mafioso types to corrupt politicians.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
CBS has tapped Clicker CEO Jim Lanzone to become President of CBS Interactive as part of its deal to acquire the company. He succeeds Neil Ashe, who came over with CBS’ acquisition of CNET and announced plans to leave the company last Dec. Jim, who also formerly served as CEO of Ask.com, will remain in San Francisco, moving across the street to the CNET headquarters.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
We covered this show when it first launched but if you haven’t seen it for a while, it’s more than worth revisiting. Lisa Kudrow has now starred in nearly 50 episodes of Web Therapy, produced by L Studio and sponsored by Lexus. The show, which is being adapted into a TV series for Showtime premiering on July 19, features Kudrow as a self-absorbed therapist Fiona Wallace who prefers to host therapy sessions through a webcam instead of having to deal with her patients in person. The series, created by screenwriter Don Roos, has become a wonderful exercise in character building and improvisation. What began as a send up of selfish Hollywood types has evolved into a complex parody touching on a range of pop cultural phenomena. Meryl Streep “hurls herself into victimhood” in the latest episode, “Camilla Bowner: Reverse Psychology” – the third in a series co-starring Streep as a sexual orientation therapist. Camilla, who runs the “Straight and Narrow” program, has been treating Fiona’s husband and found that he responds most favorably to a picture of David Hasselhoff.
