Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/28/11

Good morning, it’s Monday, March 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Google announced that it will delay distributing the open source code for its Android 3.0 operating system, codenamed Honeycomb, until further notice. The release, Google’s first dedicated attempt to compete with Apple’s dominant iPad, was designed specifically for larger screen devices such as Motorola’s new Xoom tablet. The news has some questioning whether Google will continue to support open-source releases, which allows developers to add customization features around the software. The official reason for the delay was that Honeycomb is not ready to be adapted for use on smartphones.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Netflix is close to adding over 700 titles from the vaults of Miramax to its streaming service in a deal worth more than $100 million, according to a report that first appeared in the WSJ. The studio has sought similar streaming deals with Google, Amazon and Facebook, although they’re not as close to completing these. Miramax was acquired last year from Disney by LA-based investment group Filmyard Holdings for $660 million.

The Weinstein Brothers, former heads of aforementioned Miramax, are getting into the video game business with partner Beefy Media to develop titles for console, mobile and social platforms. The TWC Games subsidiary will tap movie properties from both The Weinstein Co. and Dimension Films including “Scream,” “Hellraiser,” “Halloween,” and “Scary Movie.”

While nothing has been announced in terms of specific licensing deals, Google has begun testing its cloud-based streaming music service internally – suggesting that it may be gearing up to launch the service in the coming weeks, according to CNET. Google Music, which would be built for the web as well as for the Honeycomb version of the Android mobile operating system, would work by collecting and storing digital copies of users’ exiting music libraries.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

The National Constitution Center and Washington, DC-based PBS station WETA are working to develop educational materials and web content for PBS.org connected to Ken Burns’s and Lynn Novick’s interestingly-timed upcoming film, “Prohibition,” scheduled to air this coming fall on PBS. The filmmakers will work to create station and public engagement tools around the theme of “Civility and Democracy,” and lead conversations about the issue in a multi-city tour that began with a NCC event held in D.C. over the weekend. WETA and PBS will also launch a social media campaign on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter around the themes in the film.

This site offers an out when the boss of the house doesn’t approve of an impulse buy. A new flash travel site called Yuupon is launching this morning offering limited-time travel deals that are fully transferable and that offer full cash refunds (within 8 days of purchase.)

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Facebook
began testing a new real-time conversation-based ad system that presents contextual ads based on the topic of personal postings, per AdAge. (The example used is if someone mentions being hungry for pizza, coupons from Dominos or Papa Johns could pop up immediately after the posting.)

Full service web video distributor Blip.tv has built a Creative Services division to develop creative for advertisers’ video campaigns in house, reports Adweek. The group can adapt existing TV spots for the web by whittling down spots and adding overlays to make the ads interactive.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Thirty-eight year old Google co-founder Larry Page, who reclaims the role of CEO on April 4, has already taken steps to restore some of the start-up energy to the company by simplifying its 24,000-staff bureaucracy, per the WSJ. Steps include prioritizing projects, improving lines of communication, making executives more approachable and streamlining meetings.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Broadband TV subscriber figures continued to climb steadily in 2010, ended the year at 523 million – a net addition of over 55 million lines globally, according to UK-based research firm Point Topic. Asia is set to overtake Europe during 2011 with China still dominating the rankings both for total subscribers and net additions, as well as in terms of percentage growth.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Is it a tablet or an eReader? Barnes & Noble is introducing a firmware update to its Wi-Fi connected Nook Color e-reader next month to give it email, an App Store and even support of Adobe Flash video. The company says the Nook Newstand store, which features digital editions of 135 magazines such as The Economist, Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine, ESPN The Magazine, has exceeded one million subscription and single copy sales.

Real-time mobile messaging app LiveProfile, which says it has already surpassed its one millionth download on iPhone and Android, has added a BlackBerry version of the service. LiveProfile adds a sense of immediacy to text conversations, indicating when messages are delivered, read, and even when the recipient is typing a response.

The field of group text messaging apps has increased with the launch of Slide‘s new free Disco Messenger app that allows you to create groups of friends to send bulk text messages to.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

FremantleMedia, the producers of American Idol, are looking to leverage Facebook beyond just the voting process. A new app developed with Cameo Stars enables you to send video messages (in the form of “Front Row Pokes”) to your friends delivered from the top 11 Idol finalists. The messages pop up directly on your Facebook page and require no video player or extra download. Cameo Stars launched a standalone Facebook app in August offering up video messages from C-list celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Carmen Electra for a fee. Cameo Stars also has a Facebook campaign going to promote the sequel of DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda, premiering May 26.
